That's exactly the kind of stuff that that got me banned from http://www.chicksdigtattoos.com.

But regiments and squadrons dont have combat ratings. Could you clarify? Thanks you for your answers, but a few of them confuse me. When you say combat ratings affect weather or not a unit captures, I assume you mean personel, because they use that on abduction missions, but you also, say thay can't foil/capture. Am I missing an obvious point here?

Books give you cancer, man. Everybody knows that.

Would it be possible to adjust the game to that you could send personnel to neutral, uninhabited or enemy systems without a mission, or at least adjust it so they didn’t automatically return to there system of origin when there mission was over until you moved? I figure as long as they are running the same risk of detection while on an enemy system it won’t disrupt game play/balance, but I don’t know enough about the code to know if it’s possible. vakundok’s great post “Mechanics - inside Rebellion” doesn’t cover personnel, but judging from the kind of values that other units had, I suspect messing with SYSTEMSD.DAT is more likely to yield results? Before I start messing, with it, I’d like to know if anyone else has already learned anything about the SYSTEMSD.DAT file.

Could someone please clarify how foiling and capturing foiled units on missions works with special attention to these questions? Detection Rating determines weather or not a regiment or squadron foils a mission. Does it also determine weather or not it captures/kills any enemy Special Forces on that mission? If one unit foils a mission, do other units on that system affect weather or not the foiled enemy unit is captured? Would it be useful to pair a general with high espionage with a commander with high combat (or vice versa) so that one would enhance the chance of foiling enemy missions, and the other enhance the chance of capturing enemy special forces? Do Special Forces or characters without a command position contribute to a system’s ability to foil enemy missions?

Americans have a soft spot for crazies with inappropriate surpluses of confidence. If we didn't, the home shopping network would never have succeeded. You could also use ResHack to open ENCYTEXT.DLL to edit the encyclopedia directly, and STATEGY.DLL’s string table directory to edit names.

You shouldn't use emoticons if you can help it. Those nasty little buggers can turn on you when you least expect it! (On a compleatly unrelated tangent, you should check out this link: http://www.swrebellion.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=31 . It may serve your c*rd vi*wing purposes).

No. Nabisco obtained, by court order, a record of every IP address that had downloaded the file. They used favors culled by contributions to political campaigns to illegally match those IPs with real addresses and used their own corporate shock troops to raid those homes and confiscate all hard drives that contained the card viewer file. Nabisco then dumped all the confiscated hard drives into the Harlem River. I understand a family of beavers has since made a damn out of them, and still live there.
-
Funny you should ask. There’s an odd little story behind that file. Last year, Nabisco had intended to introduce a new product called wrapped rice crackers to the western market. They are apparently very popular in Southeast Asia. As part of the preparation, Nabisco tried to trademark the name “Wrapped Rice” and all of its anagrams, because the brunt of the initial advertising promotion was an anagram contest on the back of Nabisco cereal boxes. However, a misaligned ‘p’ typebar on a paten office teletype machine caused them to instead trademark “Wraved Rice” (and all of its anagrams). They must have noticed this right away, because they refiled for the right trademarks, but they never bothered to rescind or ask for a refund on the accidental trademarks Nabisco now owned. The bureaucratic machinery of large corporations is large and unwieldy, and once it gets moving weak forces like reason and common sense are rarely strong enough to reign it in. ‘Card Viewer’ happens to be an anagram for ‘Wraved Rice’, and Nabisco’s legal department didn’t care weather it served any purpose or not. They successfully sued http://www.swrebellion.net, and compelled it to remove that file from the site because the download contained a name they had trademarked. I swear every word of it is true. Just ask anybody.

Is there a way to change the names of existing ships?
Hutton replied to a topic in Rebellion Editing
Do you mean the unit type name, or naming individual units while your playing? Unit type names can be edited with RebEd in the download section, of with resource hacker. Resource hacker is better because you can ignore size restrictions. Open STRATEGY.DLL with resource hacker and search the String Table directory for the name you want to change. -
You just wait. They'll get you too!

While you may take some of my words with a grain of salt, I was making a valid point about how you could change the interface to a different genre. If you found some pictures of Patrick Stewart in his cyborg getup and were able to cut them up so you could move the arms and head around, you could replace all the C-3PO animation cells in the DLLs I mentioned. (I don’t use emoticons to denote sarcasm because they’ve screwed me bad in the past).

Lots of members, few votes on all the created cards
Hutton replied to JessyGiuliani21's topic in RebED Cards
I venture a guess that many members don't vote because they all got the same lectures from their mothers about what to do when they didn't have anything nice to say. [snicker, snicker] -
I applaud you effort. I too am working on a mod that won’t be completely transferable through RebEd, so I appreciate the possabilities. Unfortunately, I shun Star Trek because many of its themes ring of scientology, so I will not assist. I will point out that by editing all the bitmaps and waves in ALBRIEF.DLL and ALSPRITE .DLL, you change C-3PO into Patrick Stewart and R2-D2 into Jeri Ryan. You could also change the control room by editing the bitmap in folder 900 of STRATEGY.DLL. Have fun you treky freak!

LIES! No bannanas no hard drive! simple as that.

By main, I assume you mean major, but characters like Dodonna and Willard are not major and always start on Yavin. Has anyone figured out what special designation they have, or tell me what .dll i should look into if I want to experiment?
-
Does anyone have any ideas on how change which characters are present at the start of the game and whether or not their location is random? (useing the slots for starting characters has occured to me, but isn't sufficient).

What are you, try'n to be funny?

Thanks you Direwolf, this may work for me. My goal is to give the empire a stronger starting navy. In my conversion, I intend to make maintenance the limiting factor for the Alliance, and construction cost the limiting factor for the empire, so I could incorporate your suggestions for the desired effect. The rational is that Rebels get volunteers bringing ships so they don’t have to spend much to field them, but have a hard time maintaining their supply lines. The Empire, on the other hand, has a galactic bureaucracy to support their army, but need to spend a lot on the construction of their star destroyers.

In regard to names. 1). Use Resource hacker to open TEXTSTRA.DLL. Search the String Table directory for the name you want to change. 2). Read the entries near the one your changing to make sure your changing the right one. Some names occur in different places for different purposes. 3). Change desired entries. 4). Eat peanut butter and bannana sandwich. (If you leave out any steps, you may damage your harddrive).

I have overcome the problem, but not actually figured it out. The converter program works when it is the first thing I do after rebooting. This leads me to believe that the failure of the converter may have been caused by factors outside of the converter.

With resource hacker I have tried “Save [303] Resources…” which requires you to save as an .RC, but spits out a bunch of .BINs with it. The .RC is a list of what .BIN goes where in the in the 303 folder. I have selected an individual 1033 icon from a single subdirectory within the 303 directory, and selected “Save Resource as a binary file…” which spits out a file without an extension, so I just add .bin to the end of it. I’ve also right clicked on the 1033 icon and saved it as a “Hex Dump (*.txt)” and changed the extension to .BIN. Both Converter2 and Converter3 won’t open any of these. When I use the “.BIN -> .BMP” option, it says it couldn’t open the file. Using a bitmap file on the “.BMP -> .BIN” option produces same result. The “All .BINs in this directory -> .BMPs” option always makes the program crash. I am inclined that something is going wrong with the converter, not the hacker. It looked from your post like you misunderstood that point. Thank you for your attention.
-
Ok, I’ve tried it that way, but I get the same result from the converter with .BINs I pull out of resource hacker that way. Are there any other tools I could fool with, even if they are less convenient?

Ok, They are all from the expanded universe selection. Encyclopedia Portrait from at-st reg - 4.rtc on page 1 from the rtc section. (The Build, Fleet and Tac pictures are original and not derived from the portrait) Build, Fleet and Tac pictures from the imp biker scout reg.rtc on page 6 from the rtc section. (I just used the Imperial commando portrait) Encyclopedia Portrait from shield backup generator.rdc on page 2 from the rdc section. (I was not happy with the Build, Fleet and Tac pictures from this in card, so I made new ones, but they are derived from the portrait). Encyclopedia Portrait from tie advanced x1 - 2.rfc on page 7 from the rfc section. (I’ve cut out the TIE and reapplied it to a more complete background, and used the cut out as a base for Build, Fleet and Tac pictures). Aside from these, I have so far made three new types of regiments with new artwork derived from in game BMPs and other public domain images. Also three SpecForces and I intend to make about thirty characters. I hope members of the swrebellion.com community will be interested in playing the first version when all the artwork is done and send me feedback on fine tuning the balance of all the adjusted stats
