  1. Windows programs require "registry" entries created by the installer to operate properly. You can find the files you will need here.
  2. Have you tried updating DirectX to the latest version through Windows Update on the Windows XP Sp3 client? You can also try these DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) which were the latest version of the Windows XP DirectX 9.0c libraries (from my brief search).
  3. The easy way is to use a virtual machine with Windows XP 32-bit installed as a guest OS. If you want to install it directly on Win7 x64, then look here: viewtopic.php?f=32&t=28308

I figure in the case of Outcast and Academy, since both games were Quake III engine based, very few specific modifications were made to support the features added by Raven to underlying engine code licensed from ID. Since ID had already open sourced QuakeIII many years ago, there were very few direct economic costs in terms of programming hours spent on the engine modification, so contributing those to the community would ensure free promotion and active use of the games for years to come. Keep in mind, open sourcing the engine does not include the game art (models, map, characters). Rebellion, on the other hand, is a pure in-house development. Now, while ownership may reside with the developer, Coolhand, it's certainly contractually subjective, and they maintain a copy for patching and maintenance purposes. They may, read most definitely, still need the approval of LEC (~Disney) to release any such code. In this case, some bean counter is only going to look at the programming hours involved and decide it's not in their interest to give anything away for free. I'm still waiting for Microsoft to make Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 open source too.
  5. The source code is going to be owned by company they did the work for, in this case, Coolhand contracted by LucasArts. LEC will own the code, and despite anything communications these people may be willing to engage in, and possibly share insight into the internal operations, it would be highly doubtful any of them retain a personal copy of the code, and if they did, would be in breach of contract, and violating copyright of Coolhand, LEC by doing so. In all likelyhood, the only copy of the source code was hosted on a server at LucasArts, which bit the dust many years ago, and the old backups were probably tossed out as garbage by an IT intern. I'd be suprised if LEC even has a copy of the source code available for themselves. Good luck though, love to see you prove me wrong.
  6. Not to mention you can level up Luke relatively safely if you find a 'soft' planet (ie. no general and few troops) with the Emperor or Vader doing some mission work. Pair Luke with Han or another strong espionage/combat character as active mission characters, then I'd recommend another reasonably strong espionage/combat character(s) (eg. Chewbacca) as the mission decoy, use more than one if the planet is not 'soft' but not superiorly guarded either. With Han's transport speed bonus, you could do a mission about every 8-10 days from a neighboring Rebel planet next to the target Imperial planet. Target the Emperor or Vader for a Abduction attempt, you might even succeed, and if you don't, Luke comes back much stronger each time. Win-Win.

The installed game is 32-bit though, so with some manual patching it can run directly on a host 64-bit system. If that sounds too complicated, then the slightly less complicated option is to install a virtual machine application (VirtualBox, VMware, etc.) and use Windows XP 32-bit as a guest operating system to install the game normally.

  11. I should have been more specific, unedited or synchronized changes. If both clients have loaded the same edits RebEd multiplayer works. Same with the client executables, just so long as you use the same version or modified .exe they should connect.
  12. It should probably work for 32-bit and 64-bit mixed hosts so long as the game files are the same, unedited by RebEd. The host differences are transparent to the game executable.
  13. Good luck with that, maybe you can ask Disney to release Song of the South uncut on DVD/Blu-ray while you're at it.

  21. I don't suppose it is much of a problem if you do defrag, I was just noting that it would create a fragmented virtual hard disk.
  22. Think about it as a two-layer fragmentation issue. The virtual OS has to seek the virtual hard disk for the file it wants to access, in turn, the host OS has to navigate the virtual hard disk (file) as a noncontiguous data structure which may be interleaved with other data on the physical hard disk. By creating the .vhd all at once then the disk space on the physical hard drive is contiguous, but allowing it to expand on demand may put parts of the .vhd at the inside, middle, outside of the physical hard disk and not particularily in the order of access. The virtual OS has to seek the virtual hard disk (it doesn't see .vhd, but virtual C:\) to find rebexe.exe which may be contiguous internally to the .vhd, but the physical distribution of the .vhd on the host physical hard drive may be noncontigous (sample layout; .vhd[cluster 0-99]/mp3's/.vhd[cluster 200-299]/avi's/.vhd[cluster 100-199]). Seek time and latency increases, but on modern disk and outside of heavy i/o processes, then performance impact may be neglible for an application of this type. Also, there were brain fart issues with my previous usage of defragmentation and fragmentation interchangeably. Sorry.

You can use the snapshot feature to capture the state of the VM after installation and personalization, then if you bork the registry or pick up viruses, all you need to do is restore the snapshot and it goes back to the saved state. Quicker than reinstalling a VM. The one advange to pre-allocating the entire Virtual Disk is that the file created will be continous across your hard disk and minimally affected by defragmentation. Using the dynamic disc allocation (grow on demand) will result in the expanded virtual disk being written to the next available clusters so defragmentation becomes more of an issue. Hard drives are cheap these days, if you can spare 10GB up front for pre-allocated Virtual Disk, the performance will be better.
