That'd be one effective decoy That's why I like having one good (but not great) Imperial officer accompany Vader. Setup is almost immediate, low investment, low risk, and more in the nature of insurance (if Vader happens to perform one of his so-called diplomacy missions on a world and a Rebel diplomat is already there, there's a good chance the Reb will be caught). Besides, the Emperor should stay on his throne at all times. Kidnap Skywalker (or Solo)? What game are you playing?

I'm using the original price. They are useful and one Noghri isn't expensive but if you want to build twelve of them, it adds up. It's usually a long ways into the game when I'm not desperate for more army regiments for planetary garrisons.

Something I like to do with Lord Vader is to use a Carrack as a courier ship and to have another character accompany him. In my current game Needa is the perfect choice - he's high in leadership and moderately high in espionage and combat, but not so high that I will really miss him. When Vader's ship gets to a neutral world he starts his "diplomacy" mission (hee hee hee) and Needa does an espionage mission. I've landed some pretty big fish this way including Princess Organa. You could obviously get elaborate with other characters, teams of Noghri etc but that would tie up valuable resources and Noghri are expensive. All Vader needs is the information that there is a Rebel agent on the world. Keep the Carrack in orbit and have him continue his "diplomacy" mission, and if he gets around to it, he will catch the Rebel vermin. Unfortunately he usually injures him or her in the process...

I took a chance and ordered my fleet down to Corellian Sector, hopefully the Rebels don't attack me again in Sessawenna in the next ten turns or so, because after that I'm going to start yanking up the floorboards down in Corellian (I have 24 Commando units waiting for me in Selonia, a half dozen Stormtrooper units to replace losses from planetary invasions, and dozens of army units for occupation ). Hopefully that will get the Rebs' attention and then they'll leave Sessawenna alone... I only use Noghri for kidnapping, I never attempt assassination. In assassination attempts my agents seem to get killed more often than theirs.

Hah! I wish. The game I'm playing right now, the computer is using some pretty good strategy. It's about turn 200, I have a fairly nice fleet of two Imperial I Star Destroyers, a Victory I Star Destroyer (all fully loaded with T.I.E. fighter squadrons plus six squadrons to spare), two Carrack Cruisers (one of which is shuttling Lord Vader around in Farfin Sector or someplace), six Corellian Corvettes and two Galleons. the rebel systems in the Sessawenna Sector have been taken care of, and I would like to pop down to the Corellian Sector for some nice occupation and pacification (only one Imperial System down there, Selonia). But the computer has me absolutely pinned down with a constant barrage of small raiding fleets! Since deploying them, my Espionage Droids have given me advance warning of every inbound fleet except one (a stinking lone Corvette that blew away two army regiments and then left ). I'm constantly juggling my ships and my half dozen spare T.I.E. squadrons to turn the Rebel Task Forces back before they can start hopping around Sessawenna spreading chaos. I recently had to have my Victory and Carrack race over to the other side of Sessawenna Sector to get to a system just ahead of an Escort Carrier with three Y-Wing and X-Wing squadrons and two medium transports. After every system has at least two GenCores things should get better. In the meantime, of course, the Rebel diplomats are having a field day.

So of course, now the question is, are the fighters too cheap? Should I double their existing costs? If I did, would the poor computer be all in a muddle? More than it usually is, that is?
-
I started a game using the fighter stats quoted in my post above. There was just a skirmish at Selonia between an Alliance escort carrier with one squadron each of X-Wings and Y-Wings, and two defending T.I.E. squadrons. During most of the battle the carrier stayed a safe distance away and it was never close enough to be involved. So the battle was between the 24 T.I.E. fighters, and 12 X-Wings and 12 Y-Wings. The T.I.E.s seemed to concentrate on the Y-Wings. Stupid computer! In an actual battle the Y-Wings would be the greater threat to Imperial ships and so should (and hopefully would) be eliminated first. But in this little knife fight at Selonia, the X-Wings were the sharpest knives. On the other hand, maybe the T.I.E. pilots were just getting hits against the less maneuverable Y-Wings. The important thing is that the Imperial pilots acquitted themselves well. Although they were all killed (cost: eight), they were still able to destroy all of the Rebel bombers (cost: eight). But, although I still had a full squadron of 12 T.I.E.s flying when the last Y-Wing was lit up, they were not able to destroy a single Rebel X-Wing. Hopefully the survival of all X-Wing pilots combined with the total loss of the Y-Wing squadron will lower the morale among Rebel bomber crews.

I've got a 76 x 80 Ithorian. Hopefully you're seeing it right now, it seems very inconsistent for some reason??? I created a geocities account _just_ so I could finally have an avatar. SWRebellion.com is the first place I've ever been to that doesn't let me just use one that is on my hard drive. Ah well, if it works (I hope it does!) that's what's important.
-
Forgive me for being thick, but how do I use an avatar that's on my hard drive? I've tried everything I can think of and nothing works.

Yes we know that now but they didn't know it prior to August 6 1945.

MacArthur wanted to use atom bombs during the landings. Our own troops would have been moving through contaminated areas and breathing fallout.

Nah invading Britain was never an option (and if Hitler had ordered SeaLion to go ahead, Stalin would have jumped for joy). Surrounding Britain with U-boats and mines and starving it into a premature armistice, on the other hand... *shudder* - - - Yesterday I saw an episode of "Sworn to Secrecy" called "Japan: The Invasion That Never Was" on the History Channel. It was quite disturbing. In 1945 the Japanese were playing for time, getting ready for Operations Olympic and Coronet. Operation Olympic would have been more than twice the size of the D-Day landings and it would have been the most complex operation in the history of warfare, with troop ships coming from as far away as Hawaii. In August 1945, there were 900,000 Japanese soldiers on Kyushu, waiting for us. In addition, the entire civilian population would have been mobilized against us. In the Battle of the Philippines (according to the program) one in six Kamikazes hit one of our ships. In the Battle of Okinawa we did a lot better - only one in nine Kamikazes caused any damage. The Japanese had 5000 Kamikaze planes stockpiled on Kyushu - and 5500 on the main island. Their main targets in Olympic and Coronet would have been relatively soft targets such as hospital ships and troop transports. Also, they were organizing civilian volunteers to strap explosives to their bodies and approach allied troops or vehicles and blow themselves up. Besides the Kamikaze planes they also had piloted torpedoes, piloted rockets, Kamikaze midget submarines, Kamikaze scuba divers etc. An entire culture of suicide attacks was developing according to the program. In addition, they were stockpiling vast quantities of poison gas and biotoxins which they would use against us (as they had been doing in China since 1937). We were preparing to use poison gas as well... not only tactically, but possibly even against cities. And if we had invaded, there is no question at all that we would have used any atomic bombs which we had (both tactically and against cities). And we were planning to build them as fast as possible (I recall that in the book Day One we thought it would take 50 atom bombs to "defeat" Japan). After we nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the shock of it convinced Hirohito to order the war to end. He didn't order a surrender... he just ordered the fighting to stop. We sure weren't going to quibble about semantics. BUT some pro-war officers launched a coup against the Emperor which, thank God, was defeated. If they had been successful, this is my totally unscientific guesstimate of the eventual toll: 1 to 2 million Americans DEAD .5 to 1 million Russians DEAD Equal numbers of Americans and Russians with radiation related disorders, including cancer and leukemia 10 to 40 (???) million Japanese DEAD The complete destruction of Japan's economy and industrial infrastructure Russian Troops in occupation of Hokkaido, North Honshu, probably Greece, and possibly Italy as well.

Hmmm, yes, the particles do not come from the event horizon, they come from near it... but what about matter that enters the black hole? It has to actually cross the event horizon I would think... so how does it do that during the lifetime of the universe? I remember puzzling over this years ago and I just gave up.

I found an .MP3 (wrongly attributed to Wierd Al) using Bearshare.

*blink* Oh great, now I have to double my fighters' ion cannon and start a new game...

I suppose you could say that the event horizon of a black hole is a region where the universe has died, but only from the point of view of an observer there. Of course you could say the same thing about a photon. The thing I don't understand is how does matter ever re-emerge from a black hole during the lifetime of the universe... seems to be a contradiction there...

But a Jedi's got to do what a Jedi's got to do...

Stellar_Magic, I was wondering what numbers you use for your fighters (especially interested in shields, laser cannon, torpedo and construction cost info). It sounds like your laser cannon rating is extremely high, but doesn't that make the torpedoes kind of irrelevant? Do you use "shields" on your T.I.E.s and if so, how do they compare with the X-Wing laser cannon? Thanks!

Probably everyone's already seen this, but just in case you haven't, it rocks (and I don't even like rap). http://atomfilms.shockwave.com/af/content/gangsta_rap_se And here are the lyrics: Emperor: It's not the east or the west side Vader: No it's not Emperor: It's not the north or the south side Vader: No it's not Emperor: It's the dark side Vader: You are correct Emperor: You can't front in the Empire To all you Vader-haters out there We'll blow your planet up! Vader: What is thy bidding my master Emperor: It's a disaster Skywalker we're after Vader: What if he can be turned to the dark side Emperor: Yes he'd be a powerful ally... Another Dark Jedi Vader: He will join us or die We got Death Star We got Death Star We got Death Star We got Death Star We got Death Star We got Death Star We got Death Star We got Death Star And you know that we got it Death Star And you know that we got it Death Star Owen: Luke! Get your ass over here right now Quit monkeying around with that damn landspeeder Where're those two droids I asked you to clean, boy? Did you clean your room? Luke: Uncle Owen, I know I'm on probation I cleaned the droids, can I go to Tashi Station? I got a layaway on a power converter But now you're treating me like a scruffy nerf herder Obi Wan: Luke... Use the Force and run Run to Dagobah Run to Dagobah Luke... Use the Force and run Run to Dagobah Run to Dagobah Yoda: I'm Yoda, I'm a soldja I'll mold ya then fold ya I thought I told ya Don't be unwise, judge me not by my size You won't believe your eyes Watch the X-wing rise... Luke: Yoda, why you being a player-hater? You know that I still must confront Lord Vader Yoda: But Luke, not ready are you Luke: But there's a city in the clouds where they're keeping my crew A Jedi's gotta do what a Jedi's gotta do So now Vader - I'm coming for you... Luke: Yeah, that's right R-2, I just set a new course... We're going to cloud city Hmm, that's some mighty good gin n'tonic, Would you mix me up another... Hee hee hee... my ship specific changes so far amount to the following: Carrack turbolasers quadrupled (it still sucks as anything but a scout/courier) All other turbolasers (except for Neb-Bs' and the Death Star's ) doubled. (Edit: Dreadnoughts' troop carrying capacity lowered to 1, CC-9600 and Liberty Cruiser's troop carrying capacity eliminated). (Edit: I lowered the Strike Cruiser's construction to 50 and maintenance to 40) (Edit: just now I gave the Dreadnoughts ion cannon - range 35, fore 20, aft 0, lat 40) And I juggled the tech a little bit. Most significantly, CC-7700s and T.I.E. Defenders are tech 11. Oh... and the Gunboat's laser cannon range was lowered to 17 (damn those Corellians, anyway! )

It would be like approaching the event horizon of a black hole. As you get closer and closer to the event horizon (ignoring the fact that you would be ripped apart) time outside of your local frame of reference (which at that point would be very small) would seem to pass more and more quickly. When you reached the event horizon time would be passing infinitely quickly - as it does for a photon. If the universe will have an end, you would reach it - but the end of the universe would mean your end as well.
-
The paradoxical thing about talking about lightspeed travel is that, from a photon's "point of view", all of time passes in a timeless instant... Edit: I didn't mean to imply that there was anything paradoxical about photons. But if an observer were to travel at lightspeed, from his point of view, the universe would end (and he would have to end along with it).

I finally figured out how to be a good Imperial.
teukros replied to teukros's topic in Gaming Stories
In my current game I started with half of Sessawenna Sector in open revolt (and only one Imperial system in Sessawenna besides Coruscant). The Empire's position in Farfin and Sluis sectors was so untenable that it was immediately obvious that they could not be contested. The empire started with one Construction Yard (on Coruscant), and no Shipyards at all (and not one single neutral world with Construction Yards anywhere in Sessawenna, Dolomar, Corellian, or Fakir Sectors). Rather than spend hundreds of turns creating an Imperial shipbuilding capacity I concentrated entirely on: A: building up a basic industrial capacity centered on Coruscant, B: putting two GenCores on every Imperial world, C: building up a troop training capacity centered on Coruscant, and D: building army regiments up the wazoo The army regiments made it possible for me to implement my strategy of Imperial conquest and occupation, deliberately provoking uprisings on occupied worlds and then brutally suppressing them. I think somewhere around turn 175 I finally built the first Imperial Shipyard, but that was mainly so Vice Admiral Thrawn would have something to do... -
That's one of the things that Hawking was saying, that black holes are not portals (to pocket universes or anywhere else). Again, it kind of blows my mind that he could prove such a thing.
