Tactical crash (pre mod)

I've always had this problem on different computers, although all using Win98. Every so often, the computer will crash, almost always just after a tactical mission has finished, before it gets to the summary.

Any suggestions? I have the music turned off and I'm pretty sure it happens irrespective of whether the patch is applied or not (not that the patch fixes much, IIRC :) ). I've never played with RebEd or similar before, so it's not that.

Another question. Is there a way of copying the music files to the hard drive to avoid the continuous CD access? I asked the question a couple of years ago, but the old posts seem to have gone. AFAIK, I have to play with the music off and just the noise of the droids to keep me company, but I'm hopeful :) .

I've just been playing around with a few ship stats, so I was auto-resolving (something that I never normally do). The game crashed just after I clicked auto resolve, so it's not actually necessary for me to enter the tactical portion to get the crash.

Somebody posted that crash event in one of the forums here, I can't remeber where...

If you want to play without the cd, you'll have to create an image file with a cd burner like nero, and load the image file to a virtual cd mounter like Daemon tools. So you have to copy the whole cd for that. Copying the music and video files is not enough...

Technically correct  , except that Daemon tools can't use Nero images, but those of almost every other image format, like CloneCd, CDRWin, ...

Bromley, did you install any new shipmodels with textures ?

If so, then you might not have all of the textures installed, or more than one model is referring to one texture file. That causes Rebellion to crash during the end of the tactical battle.

Thanks guys. It's nice to know that I could listen to the music, although I'll own up now and admit that I'm probably far too lazy to do that :) . Anyway, if the game is unstable for me now, I wonder what it would be like with another program in the background.

@the_mask. Thanks. I'd seen that post about textures but, even though I have used Reb Ed now, the crashing occurred before that and I have never knowingly changed a texture. From a quick look at RebEd, I don't think that you can use that to play with textures anyway, so I definitely haven't done it.

It wouldn't matter if there was an autosave. Oh well, I'll keep manually saving and hoping :) .

Sure, but for what game ? Rebellion runs on every machine I know. Except Linux/Unix/Solaris/.../Win 3.x

Any further joy, or lack thereof?

It's one of those things that happens in spurts. I've been lucky recently, so few reloads. If I hit another bad patch I'll mess around with my display settings, as I've noticed a few times when I quit normally that the desktop doesn't resize back to 1024*768 and the colours remain at 256.

The main problem I have with the lack of autosave, apart from the sinking feeling when I lose all that work, is that I'm too weak willed. If I'm saving all the time, I find it very tempting to reload if I bombard, destroy a mine and lose the entire sector in the ensuing Domino Effect. For some reason that temptation tends to be lower if it's the game doing the saving :) .
