Physics of Star Wars

This is for real discussions about this, or whatever.

I have this hypothesis about the telekinetic aspect of The Force

It's as simple as this.  It turns the user and/or other object (based on the users command) into a giant magnet.  To move things, it simply aligns the atoms of the object to be magnetic.  This would also be my hypothesis for wood and non-magnetics, too, as the Force is would forcefully change that objects atoms to be aligned, regardless of material.  The object would be unstable from this, though, and I'm guessing that the mystical nature of the force would bind it together with no ill effects.

Post whatever you think about this and other theories here

that is the worst theory ever, it is stupid, the physics of star wars are stupid, it is technically impossible, star wars is impossible, that is why it is classified as FICTION!!!!! as in not true!

Dude, what the hell man? It's fiction, that's true, but a lot of stuff has possible things that could work in our normal life. While we all have personal opinions, I DONT appreciate people saying stuff like this is horrible, then providing no reason as to why it is.  If you see through it, then FREAKING TELL ME YOU JACK***!  Tell me what's wrong, I can handle criticism.  I only have a FREAKING HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION OKAY!?  I MIGHT NOT HAVE A PHYSICS TEACHER FOR MY PARENT, OR HAVE A COLLEGE DEGREE.  I DONT GIVE A FRACK.  It's Star Wars.  SO WHAT?!  We can always think about stuff like this!  Be more tolerant man!  I respect the fact you think it sucks, but at least tell me WHY it sucks, man!

I always thought you were cool, Cheeseman.  Before the wipe your were pretty cool, now your just really cheesin me off.

wow...ummmm....how do you know some of this stuff about me?? how did you know my father is a physics professor? are you a stalker that I don't know about? I am getting scared *looks over shoulder* sorry about critizing your theory, but you don't have to go beserk on me!

it is wrong because if you were to change the atom to be magnetic you would either have to add a proton (which in turn will change the element making it so that everytime you tried to use the force you would just be changing stuff from one element to the next, or you would have to add an electron, which is impossible, you can only add neutrons (which have no charge so they aren't applicable here) or you can add a proton, but that messes it up, it doesn't make it unstable, it would just change everything. like everytime someone used the force on hydrogen it would become helium. it just wouldn't work. you can't align atoms to be magnetic, you have to physically change them

1. Thank your for intelligently explaining that to me.  I respect stuff like that.

2.  Before you left, I learned from Cheese your dad was a Physics teacher.  I was around before you left, you know  ::)

Cheeseman;

STOP FLAMING.

He's not saying the force is real. He's making a hypothesis based in a fictional universe; for the sake of discussion, I might add.

Some intersting discussion topics about star wars physics:

1. Hyperspace.

Hyperspace is impossible in real life if it means going at the speed of light. This is because nothing travels faster than light. Think of it this way; We have jets that fly faster than the speed of sound. In "Star Wars: Where Science meets Imagination", the author explains that technically, the speed of light beat the speed of sound in their flight. It made sense when I read it, but the full explanation is about two paragraphs long. I'd retype it, but I'm tired right now.

However, lets discuss what happens when you assume that Hyperspace doesn't actually reach the speed of light; instead getting very close to it.

2. Lightsabres.

To understand the idea behind lightsabres, you have to understand what people knew about lasers in the 70's. Several statements in various sw books suggest that star wars lightsabres are made possible by a misconception about plasma (lasers, lightning, etc.). The error was that it assumes that two equally strong beams of light cannot pass through each other. The other thing is the fact that you would not see a lightsabre unless you were in a fog or similar air conditions. As an analogy, when you use a flashlight, you don't see a beam of light coming from the device; you see a circle on the targeted object.

This being understood, discuss it anyway because its interesting. ;)

I once read in one of my science mags that it COULD be possible to travel faster than light. There is a an theory that there are lanes of something (It was a long time ago Maybe energy) but the point is that if you found one of these lanes you COULD POSSIBLEY travel faster than light. Though you aren't traveling faster than light because light while in this lane speeds up as well.

BUT no such lanes have been found YET.

Sorry if it is confusing, it was an long time ago.

well it is called worm holes, and they fall under the subject of String theory which is a highly argued about theory, I personally don't agree with it because the math has to many holes in it, I don't trust it, but some people are die hard believers in it. It is very complex and hard to get the whole picture of it unless you know the math part, so I won't even attempt to explain it

I don't think they were called worm holes, they were more like streams of energy. But I could be wrong.

Oh and speaking of worm holes I saw on TV that there could be an worm hole on earth. As well as a black hole connected to the worm hole.  (very small though as in a atom in size or smaller)

Guess where they say it is. The Bermutia Triange. Though according to them it makes PERFECT sense, because the propertys are there. Stuff disappearing, unusall occurances and other strange stuff.

Sorry for going off topic though.

hmmmm. I haven't heard of that before, but sounds like a myth to me, because black holes work off their density, they have to be about the size of marble or smaller, and they have to weigh about 1 X10^75 (that is more then 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times the mass of the earth!!!!!!) so, I don't think that is true, it would have to be something else, not a black hole

Well I've heard that if you strink the earth to the size of an golf ball. that it will become an black hole. Sound strange I know but that IS what i heard.

And for an star to become an black hole IIRC it has to be around 10 solar masses. (10 times the mass of the sun)

Recent info has shown that material cannot survive Black holes. Though the same atoms are spit back out the center millions of years later, they are not in the same configuration.

Thus, if you tried to send a shuttle through a black hole, it would basically be stretched into oblivion. :(

yup, but uhh...he was talking about worm holes, or something of the sort...not black holes..they are different, it is (theoretically) possible to go through a worm hole and come through on the other side safely, but that is theoretically, I personally don't believe in such nonsence

We don't know that for sure. They COULD possiblely be an entrance to another demention (If there is one) or a worm hole. NOBODY knows for SURE. It's all speculation. Also there is something called an WHITE HOLE (Seriously I saw about it on TV) that does the oppsite thing of an black hole create matter. For all we know most of the matter going in a black hole could be coming out an white hole.

The ONLY sure fire way to know for 100% is to send somthing in an black hole and it has an transponder onboard, that can send an signal to earth IF it survives and is comeing out somewhere else.

Though we don't know for sure. Yes logicly you would think stuff would be crushed into oblivion. But we just can't be 100% sure. Their one of the great mysteries of space.

Also how many times has evendice been proven wrong many years later?

The only problem with that is that if it does go through into another dimension or another part of the galaxy, the signal would be so hard pressed to come back to earth that it would take YEARS to get back, even if it was going at the speed of light.  IF it goes into another dimension, it won't send a signal off at all.

Not to mention the fact that as soon as it got close to the black hole, the transponder would be destroyed.  :(

Ok maybe my testing idea might not work, but my point still stands. That us as humans simplely can't be 100% sure what happens to stuff entering black holes. we all know whats happening to the matter OUTSIDE the black hole, but once it crosses the event horizen it's all speculation. Because NO ONE has been there.

It's almost like does an tree in the middile of no where with no one around make an noise if it falls?

in my opinion when something is sucked into a black hole it becomes part of it. The reasons for this is because of the nature of black holes, first you have to know where they came from, they are collapsed stars with an enormous weight in a very small spot making the density huge, which in turn makes the gravitational force of the black hole huge. With the equation ac=GMm/R2 we see that, with the gravitaional constant about 6.67X10-11, the gravitation is huge, things get pulled to it at immense rates and in turn are crushed into it and become part of it making the mass even large which further increases the gravitaion, it doesn't stop until it has sucked in everything in the galaxy, but that takes a couple hundred billion years to do

that is my belief on the matter

It's all theory, all this stuff you guys are talking about is an experiential blank.  So I discourage any rational thought on the part of others, this should just be us stating theories, not trying to disprove them.  And what happened to the physics of STAR WARS rather than about black holes and white holes.
