Guest Scathane Posted July 28, 2003 Posted July 28, 2003 I'm most interested in Star Wars languages and I'm wondering as to the knowledge our honored members have got on the subject. For instance: what does Darth mean? I've heard it mention that it is a Sith word for Lord, which is very conceivable. A nice website to regarding SW languages, by the way, is Wermo's Guide to Huttese, which list some stuff on other langauges as well. However, the bulk of translated words is Huttese, yet there are a whole bunch of SW language out there. Please feel free to spill you unabridged knowledge here...
Jahled Posted July 28, 2003 Posted July 28, 2003 Honestly Scathe, Darth means Dark, everybody knows that...grumble mumble... http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif
Trejiuvanat Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Yes, it means that because Lucas wanted Darth VAder to mean Dark Father... But what does it mean within the SW galaxy. There are many languages that have been mentioned several times in the movies and in the books. Each race has its language but most of them speak basic or are tranlated. Few times is Threepio required to translate"RodianHutteseJawaWookieeseChissOld corellianYuuzhan Vong http://www.swrebellion.com/~jahled/Trej/banner.gif
Guest Scathane Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 (edited) Yes, but do we know any words? With regard to to Darth... You may call me stubborn but I hink Lord is more likely, whatever GL says. The problem of course is that he invented the term Darth before he even had the idea to make the other movies... You'll have to admit that a bunch of pretty mighty Sith would put something as daft as dark in front of their name would be, well... Edited May 14, 2004 by Scathane
Jahled Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 ...and Ewoks defeating 'a legion of my finest troops' [>Emperor Palpatine, ROTJ] has any logic? Not to mention the rebels defeating...how many have we counted fella's....fifteen Star Destroyers above Endor! ...Jahled pauses and with a swift slap punches himself in the face.... It's a kid's film that we haven't yet grown out of, he begins chanting as a mantra....rocking to and fro in his chair.... A hand reaches for a can of beer... http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif
Trejiuvanat Posted July 29, 2003 Posted July 29, 2003 Of the above mentioned alone of Wookieese I haven't seen anything written...I'll look up in the books... http://www.swrebellion.com/~jahled/Trej/banner.gif
Sith_Lord Posted August 19, 2003 Posted August 19, 2003 Well, my friend sais the Darth stands for Dark Lord of the Sith maybe it means that i think it's dark anyhows I find your lack of faith disturbing - Darth Vader-Wipe them out, all of them - darth Sidious -It's nice to be important, but its more important to be nice - scooter-If you see the flash, but don't hear the bang, you're dead-Drill Sergeant- Check my Forum india.messageboard.nl/4095 Most posts are dutch but english is allowed
Mad78 Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 It's hard to say. The sith race disappeared hundreds of years ago and with them there dialect. The only thing that remains are ruins and symbols on certain planets. The Emperor knew the symbols and décorated his room with some that he drew. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Palpycard.gifhttp://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Spamkinguserbarcopy.jpgCLICK HERE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!Click here is you like Trance

Stellar_Magic Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 I think Darth is just a title saying, hey I'm a sith Lord. But it makes alot of sense for it to mean dark. Darth Vader- Dark FatherDarth Maul - Dark FighterDarth Tyranous - Dark TyrantDarth Sidious- Dark (Guy behind the scenes pulling all the strings) But Lucas pointing out someoles role by name isn't limited to the Sith Luke Skywalker- Hero character able to do the immpossibleHan Solo- The ScoundrelObi-wan Kenobi - One who is one with the force/destinyPalpatine- The palpatable form of evil: Evil made man There are probably more if you wanted to get stuck in Lucas's mind. I don't but thats just me. bechuska Mara Jade!!! (What does bechuska mean anyway?) Guest Scathane Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 No, I must admit that your line of thinking is probably correct, Stellar... After all, if you put a character in episode II under the name of Elan Sleazebaggano, then what else can we expect...
Mad78 Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 From what I know Darth is a title. Given to a Sith when he gains the post of knight by killing his Master or finishing his training. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Palpycard.gifhttp://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Spamkinguserbarcopy.jpgCLICK HERE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!Click here is you like Trance
ElvisMiggell Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 Yeah i'd heard that too... kinda somewhere in between equivalent to Knight and Master in the Jedi i'd say. Elvismiggell. Mad78 Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 yes but the Sith concider that only the strong must survive. Mad78 Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 Seeing him and R2D2 will always be one of my favorite moments of the entire SW saga. Mr Salvatore better not get rid of them like he did with Chewie. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Palpycard.gifhttp://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Spamkinguserbarcopy.jpgCLICK HERE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!Click here is you like Trance
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted May 15, 2004 SWR Staff - Executive Posted May 15, 2004 Don't blame Salvatore for that. It was the decision of the Lucas board of editors, as well as approved by Lucas himself. Salvatore just did his job, and he made Chewie go out in a heroic way. They just don’t understand that I was given a very specific task to accomplish, and I gave them [Lucas Committee] a book that they really liked. I did what they asked me to do. Everyone knew that when they gave me this book, that there was going to be a lot of controversy. We are getting back to the feel of the [Original] movies. Its changed. It’s not the Empire anymore. There are a lot of reasons for hard-core Star Wars fans not to like “Vector Prime”.R.A.
