Star Wars languages

I'm most interested in Star Wars languages and I'm wondering as to the knowledge our honored members have got on the subject. For instance: what does Darth mean? I've heard it mention that it is a Sith word for Lord, which is very conceivable. A nice website to regarding SW languages, by the way, is Wermo's Guide to Huttese, which list some stuff on other langauges as well. However, the bulk of translated words is Huttese, yet there are a whole bunch of SW language out there.

Please feel free to spill you unabridged knowledge here... :D

Yes, it means that because Lucas wanted Darth VAder to mean Dark Father... But what does it mean within the SW galaxy.

There are many languages that have been mentioned several times in the movies and in the books. Each race has its language but most of them speak basic or are tranlated. Few times is Threepio required to translate"

    Rodian
    Huttese
    Jawa
    Wookieese
    Chiss
    Old corellian
    Yuuzhan Vong

Yes, but do we know any words?

With regard to to Darth... You may call me stubborn but I hink Lord is more likely, whatever GL says. The problem of course is that he invented the term Darth before he even had the idea to make the other movies... You'll have to admit that a bunch of pretty mighty Sith would put something as daft as dark in front of their name would be, well...

...and Ewoks defeating 'a legion of my finest troops' [>Emperor Palpatine, ROTJ] has any logic? Not to mention the rebels defeating...how many have we counted fella's....fifteen Star Destroyers above Endor!

...Jahled pauses and with a swift slap punches himself in the face....

It's a kid's film that we haven't yet grown out of, he begins chanting as a mantra....rocking to and fro in his chair.... :?

It's hard to say. The sith race disappeared hundreds of years ago and with them there dialect. The only thing that remains are ruins and symbols on certain planets. The Emperor knew the symbols and décorated his room with some that he drew.

I think Darth is just a title saying, hey I'm a sith Lord. But it makes alot of sense for it to mean dark.

Darth Vader- Dark Father

Darth Maul - Dark Fighter

Darth Tyranous - Dark Tyrant

Darth Sidious- Dark (Guy behind the scenes pulling all the strings)

But Lucas pointing out someoles role by name isn't limited to the Sith

Luke Skywalker- Hero character able to do the immpossible

Han Solo- The Scoundrel

Obi-wan Kenobi - One who is one with the force/destiny

Palpatine- The palpatable form of evil: Evil made man

There are probably more if you wanted to get stuck in Lucas's mind. I don't but thats just me.

bechuska Mara Jade!!!

(What does bechuska mean anyway?)

No, I must admit that your line of thinking is probably correct, Stellar... After all, if you put a character in episode II under the name of Elan Sleazebaggano, then what else can we expect... 8O

Yeah i'd heard that too... kinda somewhere in between equivalent to Knight and Master in the Jedi i'd say.

Good old Anthoney Daniels. Can you imagine if they'd gotten rid of him for the prequels?!? 8O

Don't blame Salvatore for that. It was the decision of the Lucas board of editors, as well as approved by Lucas himself. Salvatore just did his job, and he made Chewie go out in a heroic way.

They just don’t understand that I was given a very specific task to accomplish, and I gave them [Lucas Committee] a book that they really liked. I did what they asked me to do. Everyone knew that when they gave me this book, that there was going to be a lot of controversy. We are getting back to the feel of the [Original] movies. Its changed. It’s not the Empire anymore. There are a lot of reasons for hard-core Star Wars fans not to like “Vector Prime”.
