Have you noticed that if you retreat or keep your spotters alive to the end of the battle you keep the artillery even if they were all destroyed?  Given that the spotters are non-combatants and can be operated separately from the artillery, you can put them in a far-remote area and keep them safe while utilizing their special ability.

This doesn't seem very right.  From what I have seen, you can have 3 or 4 groups of artillery completely regenerate if you keep all of their spotters alive.  The partial squads rule doesn't seem to apply the same as groups of speeders, AT-STs, T4-Bs, etc do.

Anyone confirm this phenomenon?

i think he means keep 2 spotters.. because there is a line in the code that says that if a units total health.. (group) falls below a certain amount it is considered lost.. and u regain that pop cap back..

if you drop some units and then repair those old nearly destoyed units.. now u have gone over the pop cap :/

how this relates.. is because thats also how it determines if the unit lives on or "dies"

so maybe the game treats the 2 spotters as 50% of the group and it says the unit survived.. .. so u get ur 2 artys back
