[ROR] - Soldiers of the Empire

Recommended Posts

Okay, my experimentation has led to some interesting ideas of my own, but I'd like to share them with you before moving to the next steps.  This thread is dedicated to the debate of unit composition of infantry squads.  Each company includes five squads, but what we'll be doing is debating the load out of each individual squad, for each arm of the Imperial Military.  The first two squads have already been implemented.

Stormtrooper Squad: 10 Men

5 Stormtroopers with Blaster Carbines (3 shot burst fire, 300 meter range)

1 Stormtrooper with a Repeating Blaster (6 shot burst fire, 400 meter range)

4 Stormtroopers with a Blaster Rifle (Single shot firing, 400 meter range)

Stormtrooper Scout Squad: 3 Men

3 Scoutroopers with Blaster Pistols (Single shot firing, 120 meter range)

Imperial Army Squad: 10 Men

6 Troopers with Blaster Carbines (3 shot burst fire, 300 meter range)

2 Troopers with Flechette Guns (10 blasts per shot, 120 meter range)

2 Troopers with PLX-2M Micro Torpedo Launchers (5 shot burst fire, 400 meter range)

Imperial Fleet Squad: 10 Men

4 Troopers with Blaster Pistols (Single shot firing, 120 meter range)

4 Troopers with Blaster Carbines (3 shot burst fire, 300 meter range)

2 Troopers with Blaster Cannons (Single shot firing, 400 meter range)

i think the scout squad should be made up of 4 Scoutroopers with Blaster Pistols

because of in ROTJ when one of the Ewoks steals a speader bike there are 4 of the scoutroopers

You mean, make them a 4 man lance (Imperial term for a team of four bikerscouts)... that could work.

I'm curious as to why you're adding fleet troopers. Didn't they just fight on ships?

I've always thought as stormtroopers as the soldiers of the Empire, like the clones were. Where have "army troopers" been seen besides a few sourcebooks?

Well, that's just my opinion. Do with it what you will.

The mixed squads sound awesome, by the way.

The Thrawn Trilogy points out that Stormtroopers were only a small portion of imperial ground forces, they were the elite much like the SS of Hitler's Germany.  It's just that in the films all you see are the really important things... places that stormtroopers would be employed.

I'll have to do some skinning to get all the units I want in, in.

Also in the Thrawn Trilogy the force sent by Thrawn to assault Karrde's Mrykr base was composed of imperial army troops.

Finally, if fleet troopers are used exclusively on ships why are rebel fleet troopers employed everywhere in the books and games?

The Rebels aren't exactly flushed with personnel. They need to use everyone they have in as many tasks as possible.

u could say the same thing about their equipment too

but i have a small itsy bits problem with mixed squads

how will this work in terms of range

example.. Imperial Fleet Squad: 10 Men

4 Troopers with Blaster Pistols (Single shot firing, 120 meter range)

4 Troopers with Blaster Carbines (3 shot burst fire, 300 meter range)

2 Troopers with Blaster Cannons (Single shot firing, 400 meter range)

ok so the people with 400 memter range would fire right.. but what about the other units.. they woulnt be able to fire with the 8 other troopers because they dont have the range.. but simple they just get closer.. but then the troopers with 400 meter range would have to get as close as 120m so that every unit could fire.. since they have to travel in a group..

since we dont have "stand ground" stances we cant really effectively allow some troopers to have guns with 400m ranges when in a group with people that have a 120 m range pistol

the only solution is to allow the spacing in the squad get up to 300 m apart... or how ever needed but that almost defeats the purpose of a squad ..

Better to keep unmixed squads, at least in terms of weapon range if not weapon/unit type.

Actually, the multiple ranges work well...  Just park a unit in an area you want defended and the unit will sit there and shoot at anything that gets in range.  Tell it to attack and it will close to point blank range and engage the enemy, and both sides do this so its no big deal.

The mixed squads add a degree of realism, I think. It just feels right.

Also, a concern I had regarding army troopers is the question, "why would you train army troopers when stormtroopers are so much more effective?" The fact that several are armed with torpedo launchers answers this question, so I do support the army troopers' inclusion, now.

Using this "mixed squad" method, would it be possible to, say, give vehicles an escort of infantry?

I don't know if we'll be able to do that... but one thing that will have a lot of an effect on what units you build will be their expense.  Stormtrooper armor costs 9,000 credits a set, but the armor worn by fleettroopers and army infantry cost less then a thousand credits a set.  Stormtroopers are pretty darn expensive infantry.

I'm also thinking about adding imperial and rebel militia as buildable units.
