As i don tknow about the tech stuff in the Star Wars Universe i cant be sure but wouldnt the engine provide some power to the repulsers?  So may be the do crash but at a slow rate (30 seconds) and half the laser power. If it could be done that is  ???

The starships move far too slow in an atmosphere for engines to keep them aloft, that's what repulsors are for. The two systems (ion engines and repulsor engines) are unrelated and separate components of the vessel. In space, repulsor engines are basically useless. In an atmosphere, repulsor fields keep ships up, and engines move them. In smaller craft like airspeeders, the repulsors create both lift and motion.

so are air speeders and ground units now useless?

havent played it yet, just wondering

Airspeeders are pretty much useless if you can afford the space units...this is something I should look into.  Ground untis in general are not though.  Most of the ships are hard pressed to take a planet with turbolaser defenses.  However, I changed these turbolasers to not fire on ground untis, so if you can take a ground force straight to the generator, then you can bring in your "space" uits to mop up.  Also, captial ships can't get through planetary shields, so if the generator is inside the shields, and the enemy has enough anti-air to keep fighters at bay, you will need to bring in a ground force.

I am currently working on balancing all this out, maybe decreasing the cost of shields and turbolasers, and certainly adding more Anti Air.  The Empire is pretty much set, in my build I turned the AT-AA into a short range missile spammer (anti-fighter) and the SPMA-T into a real turbolaser like in the movies.  See attached screenshots.

EDIT:  Oh, and I also want to make two versions, one for each side, that you can install where the other side can build both the ground capable version of the unit and the space only version of the unit so that you still end up fighting those units in space.

im still trying to get over how the (censored) nebulon B frigates can go on ground combat.

Repulsors.  No ship bigger than a blastboat actually flies through the atmosphere using aerodynamically generated lift.  Nebulon-B's aren't that massive, especially compared to Victory's and Acclamator's...so where's the conflict here?  Go do a search on them, the only ships I put in are ones that have evidence of being atmospheric flight capable (which is why there is no Tartan for instance).

I don't know. Nebs look a little...fragile, to be flying in and out of planetary atmospheres...

I don't make this stuff up...I just use what the canon gives me.

The trade Federation dropships (things from EPI with giant wings) are also too fragile, they use tensor fields to keep those giant wings attached.  I would imagine the Nebulon-Bs use similiar technology.

That's in space. The Neb is fine for space, I was talking about the stresses of entering an atmosphere.

No, that's in atmosphere.  Dropships drop onto a planet, see this entry.  Do some searches and you'll find the Nebulon-B's atmospheric speeds.  Or go read some of the books.

I'm using the mod for my imperial Shipyard of Kuat GC (which has a 20 turn limit), It seems that Destroyed rebel Neb-B's don't show up on the end screen for some reason.

Is there any ground unit that can counter neb b's? (I've tried at-aa but they were crushed before the first volley)

Yeah, I too have noticed that destroyed units don't show up sometimes, and sometimes they do.  I'll need to see how this mistake repeats and see if there is anything I can do about it.

As for the ground units...my temporary recommendation would be to have another, faster unit scout ahead for the nebulon-Bs an ddistract their fire while you get them with the AT-AAs.

In the future though, you'll be able to use the SPMA-Ts (see screenshots a few posts above :) )

Will SPMA-T's will only be able to fire on capital ships?  that seems logical.  Also if they could hit fighter it would make the AT-AA's useless.

Also GREAT mod... cant wait for the semi balanced version to come out... any ideas?

  • 2 weeks later...

could this mod be compatible with the Imperial Royal elite guard mod?

What is in that mod?  Does it just add a buildable royal guard company?  If so, I imagine all you would have to do is make sure the RG company from that mod is cut and paste into the GROUNDCOMPANIESEMPIRE.xml file from this mod...and then include the ground infantry file if they've made one.

As for progress on this mod, I'm not sure how I'm going to procede form here.  This was mostly just done as a fun demonstration of the possibilities.

I'd kind of like to work with someone else on integrating this into a larger "Realism" mod...but I wouldn't do it myself because I'd just be duplicating work others have already done.  But if there is interest, I'll certainly look into it.
