Tech issue with Rebellion

Question

Hello all,

I've been playing SW-Reb for years and love it. I think this Web Site is great. I just installed SW-Reb on a new PC and I have been having some trouble with it. The PC is a 1.5ghz running Windows ME & DX 8, lots of RAM & disk. After playing a few turns (say 5 to 10) the PC locks hard, the only thing I can do is to power off completly. The mouse cursor frezzes, the music does the 1 second buffer replay and thats it. There dose not appear to be a common link between freezes. Any help or ideas would be much appreicated.

Thanks

Ron

ElvisMiggell:

"Somebody's had a lot of pc's"

Somebody used to get a laptop instead of a desktop since overnight dial-in on-call was part of the job description. Those listed above were upgrades to the original (if you can call the HP an "upgrade", oversized beast).

I told my new company I don't "do" on-call. Needless to say they didn't offer me a laptop...

If your trick can be replicated that would be most useful. It sounds somewhat better than the usual method of avoiding damage to the CD, which is to copy it and use the copy.

Cool.

What did you do that meant you were on call but needed a laptop, if you don't mind my asking?

I'm a unix sysadmin specialising in alphaserver clustering, and at the time (1998/9) the only one the company had for several critical systems. The laptop was the company's way of guarenteeing that on-call staff had a computer with a modem at home. Using them in place of desktops as well reduced cost.

Playing Rebellion without your original cd is very simple:

First you need make a disk-image of your original Rebellion disc, let's say with Clone CD, or CDRWin, or any program that can also produce a .ccd, iso, bin/cue cd image. To mount your image you need the Daemon tools (http://www.daemon-tools.com/). They install virtual cd-roms, in which you can mount your images. After installing you'll have a little red icon in your systray from where you can set the number of virtual drives (up to 4) and select which image goes into which virtual drive. After that it's the same procedure as every year  install Rebellion again from the Virtual drive and the speed/sound problems should be gone. Also your Rebellion cd might start to be covered with dust, but it'll surely outlive any other cds, that you use frequently :D

Oh yeah, and the legal stuff goes like this: I did not intend this to be a manual for using illegal copies, I can only say that this works with my original Rebellion cd. nyak, nyak, nyak .... :P

Well, I really don't see how it can be illegal if you own Rebellion... after all it says on their website that DAEMON TOOLS is for backup CDs and nothing else.

If people wanted to pirate Rebellion, they would just burn their friends a CD either way, nobody is going to stop them.

That was just for some *cough* people who have nothing better to do, than browsing through innocent pages and interpreting everything in a way, so they prove they're not in this job just to waste tax money. Why do you think I went through so much work including that copyrights thingy on my site ?

Actually Mask i was really impressed by that. You don't see a lot of people on the net take the time to make sure that what they're doing is legal, and bother to explain it too.

Well done! :D

I'm a newbie here on the boards.... but I still need help...

Alot of times when I play Rebellion, when I am coming into or out of a Space Battle, the screen goes black and the only thing I can do it shut everything down and restart... does anyone else have this problem and if so what can be done about it?

:? I don't get that, though I do have a problem when it comes to space battles as well.

In fact, it occurs on my friends system as well. Sometimes after coming out of a battle, the game would crash and come up with the all to familuar: "Window's has performed an illegal operation" crap.

I've never fixed it, so when it starts happening, I usually get the computer to do the battle for me - takes a lot of the fun out of the game, but at least it still goes.

I just started playing Rebellion again about 4 days ago (no online play tho) for the first time on my new computer (Compaq Presario with XP home) and I have also had the game crash alot on me. I almost always happens when I try to enter a battle and sometimes when Im leaving one. Its not very common but it does happen enough that I have started saving my game every 20 or so turns.

I never had any real problems on my old comp with win98 (the comp was a 133 MHz heh) and the game. So I know its XP. Im going to try playing the game after I change one of the settings in the program options. In the program properties there is a option to have XP emulate win98 for certain programs that have troubles with XP. I tried it with a few other of my old games with no luck tho so Im not sure if it will help.
