Tech issue with Rebellion

Question

Hello all,

I've been playing SW-Reb for years and love it. I think this Web Site is great. I just installed SW-Reb on a new PC and I have been having some trouble with it. The PC is a 1.5ghz running Windows ME & DX 8, lots of RAM & disk. After playing a few turns (say 5 to 10) the PC locks hard, the only thing I can do is to power off completly. The mouse cursor frezzes, the music does the 1 second buffer replay and thats it. There dose not appear to be a common link between freezes. Any help or ideas would be much appreicated.

Thanks

Ron

Hello Ron,

The sys requirements for Rebellion are 95 / 98 / ME. Eventhough ME is listed there, I dont think its really supported. I had the same issue. Two machines one with 98 the other ME. Never encountered a problem on the 98 machine, but the ME machine had the same issues as your having.

My only advise is to get rid of ME, but wait and see what some other people post about this topic.

That was a common problem mentioned on the semi-old boards. It seems ME is not a Star Wars fan...

By the way, laptops don't seem to care much for Rebellion, either.

We never figured out what the problem was, or what to do to fix it. Sorry. :(

Well, as I said in the semi-old: my laptop likes Rebellion.

As for XP: should work, I just put it on the Laptop, so I can tell you soon.

Well, my Supremacy and Windows ME get on fine. Never had any problems with it. I play it loads and its only crashed twice i think, and that was when i had other programs running in the background and i was alt-tabbing a lot.

Because the Empire is dumb, they know what the outcome is supposed to be - good always wins. However the Rebels are a pretty inept bunch so the Empire has to be really, really dumb.

I played Rebellion on Windows XP once, a few months ago, and from the morning on to about 4 pm, I played the game fine, but then it suddenly booted me to the desktop. *sigh* Needlessly to say, my last save was at least 2 hours away (of real llife work) so I just gave it up.

Maybe someone should write a script/program that will auto-save your rebellion game every 10 minutes into a certain folder? That would be real nice :)

I've had that happen before as well, it's just a little bit annoying. If someone could comeup with something like that it would be very handy.

There is a tmpsave file, that's created by Rebellion, but I don't think that it's created every few minutes. That way all the info for the saves should be only in the RAM. You see where this leeds ? Finding all the info between all the other stuff in the memory, you'd have to have at least some reference to where your savefile starts and where the end would be.

Anyone else with a better aproach to it ? It's Monday morning and I haven't really slept, so I might've left something out

Ron:

Try turning off the music.

The music is played from data files on the CD, and with the music on the CD will almost always be spinning (and the sound channels always in use). This results in a uniform 100% CPU utilitisation. I've seen this on machines from P133 to Athlon 1200 - and the system response is still quick, so it's really I/O bound not CPU bound.

I've used Win95, Win98 and WinNT, so I wouldn't have thought WinME should have a problem (it's more likely hardware related). You could also try a lower edition of DirectX (if possible for WinME). v8 problably has as many bug additions as feature improvements over v5 & v6.

NT needs the unofficial DX5NT4 kit to work: http://www.peregate.com/anvil/dx5nt.html. Caveat Emptor.

Rebellion works fine on laptops - I've personally played it on: Tecra 710 & 740 (toshiba), Omnibook 7150 (HP) and Latitude CP (dell). The only problem with laptops is heat - rectified by turning off the music as mentioned above.

Ian.

I forgot, that others still use their cds, sorry.

I switched about 6 or 7 months ago to running Rebellion with Daemon tools, from an image on my hdd. The spinning noise got on my nerves and the Rebellion cd is just too precious to be spinned to death after a small crack in the center ring would appear. That is only a possible threat for people with cdroms, that spin 40x and above. A buddy of mine once was at the pc of a friend of his and the 52x cd rom totally shredded the cd he brought :( After this, I somehow got really careful

But with this you can really decrease heat on notebooks and you can play the music all time.

Hmmm...perhaps you could write a tutorial and put it on your website...eh?

:D
