Re: Already gold?

After i read this posting from darth_torpid-pg on lucasforums i'm wondering if the game has already gone gold:

Delphi and I read all of the comments in that section, and in the "feedback welcome" thread especially (I started it after all ) While we don't have time enough to respond to every single idea/suggestion/question, We do take note of all of them. We will also, of course, pay close attention to things said once the game ships.

It's already too late to change the shipping version. However, since the demo is from an early December build, many of the concerns and bugs players have found have already been addressed. Those concerns that may not have been addressed and are not "by design" can be addressed afterwards with patches. We don't plan to let you guys hang once the game hits store shelves; we'll make every effort to make your EaW experience a good one. That's not to say that every single suggestion/concern/wish will be instantly put into the game, but it does mean that we will certainly consider it.

Community is important to us, as is making great games that people enjoy playing. We aren't vocal all the time, be we ARE watching...

If no more changes are possible that means its code-freezed and that can only mean it's gold already or at least very, very close to being gold....

What do you think?

Two weeks is a little long for the actual process, but I would not be suprised if they are giving themselves some breathing room since this is not just a North American release.  At any rate, you don't sit there and add features into a game right up to the gold date.  No telling what bugs you may insert in the meantime.  (although some games come out where it seems that this is exactly what happened)

Well seeing as it is almost out, I wouldn't be real suprised if it has gone gold. Right now they are basically working out all the bugs from the engine and game not adding features.

If they want to make the release date of 2/15/2006 then it better be gold. Figure at least 5 business days of copying CDs from the gold master + combining cds, manual, other inserts into box, 5 business days ground shipping to all the retailers across the country (and the world if this is a worldwide release).

It probably takes more than 5 days for packaging and shipping, so the above might be unrealistic. In that case it probably turned gold several weeks ago.

Since this is a PC only release, they dont have to worry about strict TCRs/TRCs that Sony,Microsoft and Nintendo have as rules before a game can be published on their formats.

If they are still working on small bugs (and at this stage, thats what should be left), the game isnt gold.Gold is when the game is completely finished and ready to ship. It doesnt take long to get the game out. They will already have covers/cases prepared within a certain quantity and if PR have done their job right, the cover of the CD could have a quote or quotes from magazine reviews.

Not entirely correct, or explained correctly. A Gold disc is considered a master disc. Once the final version is compiled, it is burnt onto several master discs. Once this discs are done, they are sent to the publishers. Once the game has left the developer, then the game has "gone gold".

The fact is that Empire At War was sent to LucasArts & Electronic Arts (New Zealand) for publishing, around about the date of the release of the demo. It usually takes between 21-28 days for the game to leave the developers, be mass produced , packaged, and shipped to retailers before the date of it's release. This is such a huge operation that 2 weeks is not enough time to complete such a process.

21-28 days? Then there must be a big difference to how things are done over there. In the UK/Europe, its alot quicker, especially on a PC only format...oh and thats the last time Im gonna explain anything using a 56k modem!!  ;D

Its my understanding that the game is slated for simultaneous worldwide release. That, coupled with the fact that Lucasarts is probably not using Air shipping to get it to Europe, means that it will take at least a week to get to you. Then another week for trucks to deliver it to stores and a day for European labor to put it on the shelves.

well if it would take the average month to get here like it does when its NOT a worldwide release....why say it is?

ppl say its worldwide when it infact does come out on the same day/next day.

Okay. So, lets backtrack in the timeline. Suppose the game really will come out on Feb 15th worldwide. And suppose to get to Europe it takes 3 weeks. That means the boxes have to be ready for shipping 3 weeks prior, or Jan 25th. Which means the production CDs have to be ready at least 1 week prior. This takes into account the actual pressing of CDs and the shipping to the facility where they combine CD, manual, box, and inserts. So that's Jan 18th. Which means the game should have gone gold on Jan 18th, according to this production timeline.

Which was the whole point of what CnC King and myself are trying to explain. The game was already gold when the demo was released and was in the pipeline for creating CDs, boxes, packing, and shipping so that stores worldwide will get it by Feb 15th.

As far as im aware the US release dat is the 15th and the UK/European release date is the 17th (a friday, becuase they like to compile charts or some excuse). so its a near worldwide release, i would have thought the game would be in mass production by now, considering its only two weeks away now and they have to ship the units all over the world, probably by ship.
