Re: Stupidity in America over "violent" games

Now I do not really play many awfully violent games.  I passed on fear and Quake4 because they were too scary for me.  However upon seeing this article on Gamespot I couldn't help but feeling outraged. http://www.gamespot.com/pages/news/story.php?sid=6143114

For those of you who don't want to read it I'll summarize:  A republican candidate wants to lower taxes in some areas but wants to increase them for soda (up to 50 % tax on beverages with sugar in them) and "violent" video games (100% tax!).  Most video games are considered violent of a type (either shooting/killing or whatever).  I think games are expensive enough at $50 but to have to pay a 100% tax (doubling the price), games will become almost prohibitively expensive.  Now I don't think that it will go through (and keep in mind it is only for the state of Texas), but still what if enough parents thought that video games were a danger enough to tax the heck out of them like alcohol and cigarettes?  Mostly adults vote (compared to those 18-24 or so) so it could possibly happen...  I personally can't see this happening but I still fear that there is a possibility...

Your guys' (and gals') thoughts?

Thank god I dont live in Texas, or the USA for that matter. Here in Finland we already have to pay 60+ euros for games. Its sick how some politians stick their noses is things they know nothing about.

It bring upon us more of famine, death and war,

you know religion has a lot to answer for.

(mad for the first 3 paragraphs then calm on the last sentence)

This is why we EDUCATE people and not have to go through such stupidity like in Europe. Yes there was French riots a few months ago but heck its the aftermath of what you know who is doing. Thats beside the point.

Why do teachers always have to banish games as if they are demonic things and same with movies (Schools act like another country). Theres games that are violent for HISTORICAL REASON such as Silent Hunter 3 and Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 and Earned in Blood. If the politics want to be stupid for non-educated reasons then they need to be kicked in the rear. If they don't shut the parents up by punishing (Jail for 5 days and being wipped 3 times a day) them for being crybabies then thats their fault.

Just because parents aren't educated and blame time isn't politics fault. Just becaues parents cant properly hide games isn't politics fault. But politics obeying the parents is the politics fault for giving in now its their fault. Its also the parents fault for sueing for money, those greedy bastards. Stupid parents wake up and smell the fresh air and not the stale USA Politic air.  Geez.......... Remember the New York PSP graffiti ? New Yorkers are sueing Sony for that and well thats pathetic from New York. COMMON YOU CAN PAINT IT OVER JEEZ, bunch of cry babies. WAKE UP DAM IT.

Ok politics what games do you consider violent? Educate yourself please and then make your final decision  ;D

I killed the chat. Ok anyways i'ma type out everything from this bias world we live in today called North America. Here is what Toronto has to say about Need For Speed Most Wanted and a car crash.

I'm defending EA games on this one just because people are bias.

Toronto - A video game may have influenced two teens accused of piloting real-life luxury cars in a high-speed race that killed a taxi driver police say.

Need For Speed , a game that allows players to select custom cars and race them through crwded urban areas, was found on the front seat of one of the suspect's cars following the crash late Tuesday.

"Here we have, in real life, two guys driving high-end cars at a night rate of speed in an urban area," said Det. Paul Lobsinger.

"I don't think it's a giant leap for people to say, 'Wow, how does this go together?'"

The victim, Tahir Khan, 46, was supposed to sear his oath of citizenship for the adopted country he loved so much.

But the taxi driver's dream for a life as a new Canadian died when he was making a left turn. One of two Mercedes - travelling at speeds as fast as 140 km/h in a 50 zone in one of Toronto's wealthiest neighbourhoods, according to witnesses - struck his cab, driving into a phone pole, police said.

The crash killed Khan instantly, making a widow of his wife in Pakistan, where she has lived since he immigrated to Canada in 2000.

The video game was found on the front seat of the car that hit the cab, said Lobsinger. It's believed the suspects had played the game before they hit the streets, added Det. Nick Sklar.

Alexendar Ryazanov and Wang-Piao Dumani Ross, both 18-year old university students, were arrested and charged with criminal negligence causing death. Ross is also charged with failing to stop after an accident causing death.

Khan visited Pakistan last year and planned to move his wife here, said friend Munir Ahmad. "He was a very good person, a hard-working guy, a very honest map

Well first you guys need to realize that this would never happen.  It's too big of an industry.  Let's not get started on US politics because then i will go at it trust me on that ;).  Some of you who have been around for a while saw the arguement myself and anothre member got in over the war in Iraq.

I dont agree with this bill first of all.  People who commit violent acts from video games have a mental disability.  They are not able to distinguish reality from a video game, they need psychiatric help.  Secondly most parents in this country need a scapegoat.  They say "My child would never do that!  They are an angel ( ::) )!  Its the video games fault!"  Or "Its the televisions fault!" or "Its the internets fault!"  etc.

Parents in this country need to own up to the fact that their children are not perfect and blame THEMSELVES.  After all who influence more than 95% of a childs opinions, thoughts, actions, etc.  Their PARENTS!  On a side note, parents need to beat their kids more.  No one hits their kids anymore or disciplines them for that matter.  Thats a major problem in this country too.

My 2 cents. :D

How many people (even in Texas) would have even heard of this guy if it hadn't been for this controversy?  I am willing to bet that is one of the main reasons he claims he wants the tax.

Regardless, I wouldn't worry about the government restricting gaming (outside restricting it to under 18 year olds).  The main reason the broadcast flag hasn't passed is because no politician wants to get between their voters and their TVs (the broadcast flag would allow each show to decide how often/much the content can be copied).  Sooner or later the amount of gamers who are eligible to vote will be great enough that no politician will want to get between their voters and their video games.

Zing!

Gen. Vader is right that it wouldn't happen of course, but still...  The game industry is large enough to have a say in it (big business you know).  Anyway I was just posting that tidbit of news up there to see what you people thought about it.  When I first read it I was afraid that I'd never be able to game again if prices jumped 100%.

don't worry about it but i have notice a rise in the MEdia and politician's blaming 'violent' computer games. but i'm lucky i live in Britain no Idiot would attempt to pass that here thye couldn't as there would be mass Gamer Riots up and down the country and the fact that shop lifting would increase is an added incentive.

Outrageous! >:( Whose that republican?! I'll make sure he isn't elected again. (I always liked democrats anyway)

I thought Republicans were about improving the economy(via buisness tax cuts) and democrats vice versa(that is what it said on my textbook on why the parties were formed).....

He wasn't elected.  And he won't ever get elected.  I strongly believe as the average gamer age increases (as Gen X gets older) the "video games are the evil!" views will go away.

Hope so ;D
