Anyone wondered what would happen if you replace the Gallofree transport model with the one for the Acclimator?  I was going to work on this but I didn't have time before work.  Maybe someone has more time to mess with this, because if it is successful, we could modify the capacity, or size of the group it carries, etc to allow a massive troop drop from an Acclimator.  There are some things in the files that make me think that this is possible.

As it stands now, the troops are automatically assigned a transport ship with shield values, weapon hardpoints, etc.

We should be able to create a new unit type, Shock Troops for example that has 25 or more troops per group and have that particular ground unit spawn a fully operational Acclimator as its transport, and have the Acclimator model be the one that comes down and drops them on the ground battles too.

And another idea I just had while writing this is the possibility of modifying the Z level that the transport comes down to.  If you can do that, I would think that it would be cool to have some type of (and I am just throwing an idea out there), modified scout bike mine or use the bombs that the y-wing or tie bombers drop and build in some bombardment.

I am not sure how we would represent that in the reinforcement box, but as an interim solution, maybe we can create a bombardment "pod" or something that is basically the bombs or the mines in a deployed state.  Have its spawnable ship be the Victory Class Star Destroyer or the Acclimator for the rebels.  We would have to have a way to override the spawn location radius limit, but if we can affect the z axis and the dropship model like what would be necessary above, we could have what looks like a low level bombardment by that ship.

These are just some ideas I had.

Sounds Very interesting, i too wish that the troops would be in an actual ship rather then a transport (like in a corvette or somthing ) obviously not moddable for the demo, but an idea worth looking into for all you modders  ;)

Venators are atmosphere capable, you see them landing and taking off Coruscant in Episode III, but the Venator can only carry 2,000 troops.  Its meant more as a fleet carrier then a planetary assault ship.  The Acclamator however... Yeah, I'd go with that ship, if you could fit it on the map.  ;D

I stand corrected.  However, moderate success can be claimed by getting any fleet ship to show up on ground, even if it clips all over the place.  The problem that may be the showstopper is that that type of closeup may require a special LOD model that may not be there at all for any other ships than the transports.

you also see them when they are assaulting that planet that grevious is on in ep 3.

But don't you think this would kind of severely imbalance the whole game? Nobody would build starships at all if he can just rush with Acclamators and/or Venators who only cost as much as ground units ...

But even if you raise the cost of the ground unit to a ridiculously high value (from ~100 to what the Acclamator/Venator usually cost) you still have a unit that can do both ground AND space battles, which is something only a few of the hero units can do.

Don't get me wrong - I do like the idea. I just doubt the game would still be playable.

What I would do is give the ordinary transports and shuttles (especially the Lambda class) a little more firepower and less hull, so they can deal out more damage but don't last several minutes under the concentrated fire of three fighter squadrons and a capital ship.

the venator transport units will only have light shields and laser cannons.. still relying on other ships for protection.. the ship is stripped down to make room for more units

I can do this in 10 min - the problem is that the maps are too small for such huge ships. And they will not fire anyway ... so

I made all the troops to attach in space to capital ships like the heroes but if you blow the ship you loose all the troops ... and if they were in space they could retreat ... so - it was pointless.

From what I've seen, there is no real difference between ground and space as far as unit abilities and stats are concerned.

If you look at ground buildings, for example, they have "space" position values so that the Rebel Speeders dont run into them. So, I figure you could adapt Chewie's capture ability to some special "Troop Boarding Vessel" a la Homeworld 2. I'd look now, but I'm at my college. x.x
