Dante of RenEvo Software & Designs has released a file extractor utility for the Empire at War demo. With the small program you can browse and extract data files from the .meg files used by Empire at War. Microsoft's .NET Framework Version 2.0 Package is required to run the Empire at War Extractor. Grab the program using the link below.

So what do I do with the MEG-file I extracted from the package?

It bring upon us more of famine, death and war,

you know religion has a lot to answer for.

first of all go into your GAMEDATA/DATA subfolder where you installed the demo to and backup the original CONFIG.MEG file. Then copy/paste the one from the zip straight into the DATA folder and confirm any overwrite. Thats it.

So question is with petro actually somewhat encouraging us to play around with the game and finding these files what is their motive?

1) are they testing out the modders' abilities since the game is "modder friendly"?

2) is this more along the lines of a beta test than a demo?

Hmmm.hope so, maybe they will release a patch to unlock units we didn't find yet.

The latest version is Chriz Mod V 4

HOWEVER, after installing the mod, you will not be able to complete some tutorial levels.

Good news however: to play it, simply move the mod folders to another folder(or desktop)and rerun game. Then for the mod back, put it back in.

heh, I am willing to bet (or take this as a suggestion Delphi, if not) that Petroglyph will be cleaning up the files considerably, or already have.  What we have is something that has pieces from all the way back to E3.  At any rate, if anyone doubts the power of XML in data handling, the way they are doing it with EAW is proof of its power.

As Delphi will no doubt attest, keeping your data organized is highly important in a game.

There is only one other game I can think of where it is this easy to mod, and it isn't a game most people would think of modding. i am speaking of course of World of Warcraft, where the entire interface is XML based and EASILY modifiable.

I seriously hope the Petro keeps this structure of filing for the final release(just clean up the outdated E3 crap =P). Though I do wonder, what is the difference between the ships marks with an E3 name, and the regular ones(example, there is a Generic_Star_Destroy, Star_Destroyer, and Star_Destroyer_E3)?

I've served my time in Hell."

Hehe, you haven't played a lot of games. Civilization IV, Rome Total War come to mind.

I would have to say the difference is more between legal and illegal hacking.

Anything unencrypted is fair game, in my opinion.

Yes, but usually the game works better without the modification(unless it's a map or something). It just gets obnoxious when people toy with the demo when the game is a month away...Patience, is ultimate power.

Until EaW comes out I'll be relishing hours of AOE III and WarCraft III, with a little bit of ol' StarCraft.

I was speaking of The Movies, which has been modded extremely poorly. It doesn't effect the game but effects the movie quality.........WHATEVER!
