How to read the 'meg' and 'dat' files of the demo

May anyone of you know how to read the *.meg and *.dat files of the demo? At the moment I am reading the 'CreditsText_English.dat'

It is like in the old C&C days. Everyone of Petroglyph thank his friends, brothers, sisters and so on. Also the Community fanpages and boards are named in the Credits. I use UltraEdit-32 but it is very difficult to read with it. :D

I hope someone of you know a better tool for this. ;)

.dat is not working with wordpad. ;)

 

Well I opened up the credits file easily and it may look like garble but look at me and Cain in General Chat :P .meg on the other hand lagged the crap outta my computer with notepad since I blindly opened it.

 

edit: C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars Empire at War Demo\GameData\Data

Click on the notepads and you can see the ships names :)

Its way to big to just post here (its over 9 000). I put it in my wordpad so if you want it MSN or Xfire ?

Use the Options.meg file to modify the starting units in the Demo Campaign.  I had a fleet of 4 Mon Cal Cruisers to start with and set my starting tech to level 4 so I could build Assault Frigates and A-Wings.  It looks like they disabled things for the demo for the tech you were at, but not higher things.  I haven't had time to find out how they do the disable though, once I figure that out, it is all over.  :)

By they way, if you change the reveal adjacent planets (or something like that) to TRUE you can jump to different ones. 

 

I would recommend making the changes to the .meg file with a hex editor as it seems that modifying the .meg file in notepad caused the game to crash.  I don't know if there is a file size check or I inadvertently did something, but more testing will tell.

Which hex editor would you recommend?  I'm really interested in modding some stuff right off the bat.

hmm... I wonder.

I wonder if C++ will work for this.  You can open most everything with it.
