If you could talk to the game's developers...

By the way, where is Scath? I've tried e-mailing him to no avail. :? I'm getting a tad worried...

Dude, do not freak out. The Japanese era of the 'floating world' truely had nothing on the reality of life with the internet.

I read a post of his somewhere recently he was doing some work for Deloitte Touche, who are a very big financial institution; we had them as an account here in London when I was a chauffeur controller, and their account was, well, worth serious bucks to the company but a right bloody nightmere to look after. Just because someone is seriously overpaid for doing their part in shuving society towards the gob of Mammon; does it give them a fundermental right of giving me as their provider of transport a headache??? :? NAY! :x

These guys would moan about the cost of their Mercedes S-class chauffeur driven transport from the city of London to Heathrow or Gatwick somehow overlooking the fact I had their return job picking them up from concord for example a couple of days later already on my screen! Scum. :x And they generally all lived in the richest parts of London my monthly rent couldn't tender for a day at their dwellings. Scum.:? Err..

Ummm... oh whoops... rantiness Jahled wandered off upon.... :(

Bad memories of a former job...

Breath, my friend, everything shall be alright. Didn't you once say you believed in karma, Jahled? Well, what goes around comes around; those who abuse and do not bother to help others are not at in the top ten for good karma. Additionally, don't forget that it was Jesus the Christ who said, "...the meek shall inheret the earth."

No worries, bro, continue being Jahled: a good man.

But...does this mean Scath is okay?

why don't we try and conntact the owner, george lucas himself, i personaly don't know if he's president of lucasarts or not, but i'm pretty sure he would be the owner. and therefor would be able to help us.

Sorry.

While I haven't completely forgotten you, I'm working on another (less interesting by far) game that's been going into crunch far too often. Such is life in the industry.

I have looked in my archives; unfortunately I didn't take the codebase out of Coolhand with me. A triumph of honesty, I suppose, but there were some of your questions I wouldn't be able to as easily answer without looking at the code.

I'm not sure, at this point, if I can lay my hands on the questions you posed. Do you want to send them again? I'll try to get to them during compiles, but won't be able to research them as thouroughly as I'd like.

Hugh

It goes without saying that I sent him the questions anew. :D

Umm, I have a late entry: what programming language is Rebellion written in ? My money's on (Visual) C++, since most games are written in it.

Also, if he had any hex locations of the files, that would help us as well.

8O crazy idea: would he know a former colleague, that might have taken the sourcecode with him ? ....

The last point The_Mask made is critical, Scathe! It will potentially unlock all the ideas and dreams of Rebellion 2 we've all be wanting for years now! 8O

:| right :(

So we're back to starting a petition for Lucasarts to make it open-source.

We're doomed

Why?

Whilst I do not advocate anything unlawful, Lucasarts have been sitting on the game's sourcecode for years now, it is not easily available to the public, and Lucasarts have not supported the title in any shape or form.

We've been asking them politely for the source code to no avail.

Is it illegal for some bright hack to obtain it by reverse engineering the game's coding? I think not. We just need to stumble across that person who can.... LucasArts should be proud of this site's continued contribution to one of their cult-status titles.

You could really use your sword to make him consider wisely his answer...

Ok. But I can't promise, it will work through the phone.

Oh yes they should be! They should be. :|

Frankly, yes. It is their copyright, their code, their game.

Even if the developers were allowed to release the source code, they can't release anything copywrited: none of the Star Wars stuff that makes the game actually a game. Look at Homeworld: Relic released the source code to Homeworld 1 (w/o actually any of the parts that makes it Homeworld), and still no one can compile it sucessfully.

With today's technology, I wouldn't want such old code to develop a game anyway. Better to build it from scratch, modularize and script it (LUA, etc), and allow better editing and moding.

I agree. There were some people here, who posted, that they already work on a Rebellion 2 engine. However, those guys are disappeared ages ago. :(

Which still leaves open the problem of the game being Star Wars... Because anything Star Wars is GL's intellectual property... :(

My guess is that as long as we keep our modifications no more than that, namely modifications, LucasArts won't mind a bit. :D

Granted! But I can't be alone in being more than a little curious to see all the stuff viewable with resource hacker (Millenium Falcom in the tactical battle... unused wav. files..etc) during gameplay...

Your last point is of course obvious, but it's actually a case of someone doing it; which would be a daunting task, and with the greatest repesct to the outstanding achievements of our modder's, dont see any hands raised, if but for the time factor and people's real lives!

Edit: Spell I must!

Hey this may sound stupid and may have been brought up before, but I'll say it anyways.

Why not beg Lucas Arts for a Rebellion 2?

I mean were not gonna get the source code for Rebellion anytime soon, so why not try to get a better version of the game with a modular design (so we can make the edits we can) and some even cooler graphics. Plus they could add in stuff like 3D ground combat (I'm thinking Imperium Galatica 2 style or what was that game where you got to do Star Wars ground comba). Also with the advances in computer power we wouldn't be limited to set sizes for anything if Lucas Arts did it right. I could finally play the Rebellion with Z-95s, Y-Wings, X-Wings, A-Wings, B-Wings, E-Wings and K-Wings all at once!

Finally we could get true multiplayer, how about a game with Hapes, CSA, New Republic, Empire, Chiss and Vong all at once?

Not to mention general engine cleanups and the like.

If anyone else is interested let me know. I'm sure Lucas Arts is busy writing games for Episode III right now, but after that they should have some spare time on their hands. If we can prove to them there is a market for it...
