Stellar smiles as he thinks about how ^^^^ Comment of how difficult it would be to play at this scale.

I'll find a way.

wow, I heard borg cubes were twice the size of an ISD but I'll be damned. It never seemed that big in Next Generation.

Well the ISD is 1,6 kms long - the Cube is 3 km - but if you look at the mass of both of them in 3D - loll you'll see the difference.

It isn't only a problem of RTS games. I think there is no SW or ST game that used exact sizes. Even the Combat Simulator ones like ST Bitch... uhm sorry :P Bridge Commander or the X-Wing Series never used exact sizes. I remember Nebulon-Bs beeing almost half the size of an ISD and Star Bases only 2 or 3 Times bigger than an Sovereign Class Vessel.

By the way... wouldn't it be great to do another SW vs. ST mod ? (veterans might remember the days of Star Trek Armada : STvsSW mod 1 and 2 by P90)

EDIT:

wow, I heard borg cubes were twice the size of an ISD but I'll be damned. It never seemed that big in Next Generation.

Just think of the battle where a whole fleet of federation ships attacked 1 single cube. Even the biggest ships looked like flees. But one thing should be mentioned : There are still different types of Cubes...

Though most all the Cubes are the same size, with the exception of merged cubes which are 6x6x6 instead of 3x3x3.

Star Trek: Bridge Commander was pretty accurate with its scaling, but Armada and Fleet Command weren't.

Well, that of course, is due to the type of game you are talking about. Bridge Commander wasn't designed for more than 10 or so ships at a time and Armada and Armada II had control groups for at least 8 ships on each number key including 0, so there is 80 ships you can have on a whim. not counting their facilities and stations.

EAW seems to have choked the unit count down to almost nothing which should allow us to see things in their proper scale. From the camera movements I have seen, it seems that the zoom level and fluidity is capable of smooth resizing of your view box to allow you to handle the different sizes.

One of the things I am going to be checking on is the proper scale of the ships and units. As long as the models and their skins are done well, scaling down should improve their looks if not leave it the same. Expanding the size may risk stretching of some bitmaps/vectors, but with the starfighter icons, I think things should be scaled down to fit the largest rather than up to fit the smallest. This will leave room for LOW's Super Star Destroyers and possibly Borg technology in a SW vs ST mod as well.

As well as with the RoR mod.

Of course the Size Comparison chart above has its share of problems, the AT-AT and the SSD are slightly to small, the Romulan Warbird slightly to big.

Well, the SSD is an odd model in and of itself. I think that the final size that has been officially agreed apon and verified against the movies (highest level canon) puts the SSD at 19km. This is verified by the online Star Wars Databank here: http://www.starwars.com/databank/starship/superstardestroyer/

The Imperator (Imperial) Star Destroyer however is the correct stated size at 1.6km according to the Star Wars Databank.

I can't verify the Star Trek sizes because I don't know a reliable source offhand, but according to the films and series, the TNG Enterprise was dwarfed by the Romulan Warbird. Of course the perspective from inside the Enterprise may render a smaller difference in size as being more substantial than viewing from this angle.

and the Borg cube only hold 1,000 people? That was the number in Armada 2. Now looking at it, there has to be at least 20,000 borg inside, though I think it still might be less due to automation of everything.

I did read in a novel, that to defeat a romulan Warbird, the Enterprise-D did infact fly into that large gap between the dorsal and ventral sections of the warbird. The novels also, during encounters with Romulan Warbirds will state that one is 3 times as big as the Enterprise-D.

I wonder how anybody is planning to implement that SSD in an EaW mod.. if they want to keep that scale, how the fuck do you manouver them on the map? They'd probably cover the entire screen for gods sake! o_O

many mods will have the SSD in - most known is LoW - but they will all have the size reduced - maybe 2.4 ISD in size.

Heh, you're funny Cain but the fact is that proper scaling is very possible, maybe with some slight bends but on the whole very possible.

Off topic - He he he - I will love to see how you make all the ships smaller just to acomodate a real size SSD. In the end you will keep the original capital ship sizes and maybe make the SSD 3.0 ISD size - more - and it will be bigger than the planets.

Not really, I remember in an earlier screen, a space station dwarfed an ISD by over 10 times.

Yes indeed. You may be correct - good note.

RoR is planning to utilize proper scaling for all units, even if we have to make starfighters microscopic

Heh, Star Wars Tecnical Commentaries has stated the right lenght of the Executor since 1995. :D

StarWars.com is just sloooow. :P

Well, with the little I know, those sizes (except the Executor of course) looks about right.

By the way, Cain, if you ever gonna up the size to the propper lenght, keep in mind the bridge tower dimensions is standarazid by Kuat. So it's the same size on an ISD, any of the other larger SD's, and SSD's.

why is that Trekkie stuff even in there? mixing SW and ST is like a sin (unless of course we get to see SW ships kicking the @#$% out of ST ships)

I think that some of those are the wrong size..... yeah, If I remember correctly the ATAT is 50 Meters tall.

edit: wait never mind I'm wrong but the ATAT looks awefully smaller than is should be.
