Hey, here's a pretty open-ended question: What kind of music do you listen to? Ellaborate and specify in your post. Also, name some of your favorite bands and even give website URLs so we can all enjoy!

 

 

 

 

 

 

I'm a metal-head and thus mostly listen to rock, but interestingly I concentrate on one band mostly: System Of A Down! http://www.systemofadown.com

Also included in the Rock category is Linkin Park. I also listen to softer stuff, like oldies. The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, etc. And lastly, classical: Tchaikovsky, Bach, and Mozart, to name a few.

And some new wave style music like Chillout albums, or the Buddha Bar albums. Also Buena Vista Social Club, and even some Frank Sinatra(!)

Classical: Mussorgsky, Wagner, Liszt (of course)

I also collect soundtracks.

As I stated elsewhere not so long ago, I used to DJ at a couple of clubs in North London with the Hobo sound system (which incidentally involved into Smoke City who did ‘Underwater Love’ for the Levis Jeans TV commercial, the samples were from one of my Brazilian Batucada LPs, and Zero7, Sam and Henry, who I went to school with and did gigs with). The music I played ranged from Brazilian grooves, Batucada (drumming/percussion), funky jazz, rare grooves, and lounge/exotica. I still do CDs for a few bars in Clerkenwell here in London, but I had two boxes stolen outside a club with the cream of my LP’s one night, and was so heart broken I gave up collecting music on vinyl. I gotta say, that really hurt! I had records I spent serious bucks on, a Brazilian LP by Trio Mocoto cost £85, Fela Kuti’s ‘Black President’ set me back about £60, etc.

 

Gutted.

 

Anyways, I like all types of music really, with the exceptions of most modern dance and soul. When I was in my teens I was into hard rock and metal along the lines of Motorhead, Scorpions, UFO, Iron Maiden, Zepplin, AC/DC. Rose Tattoo, Rush, etc; basically stuff from the 70s and 80s before all that American glam-metal crap which killed it for me. (It was good to see dudes like the Red Hot Chili Peppers resurrect the rock scene!)

So there’s always going to be rock in my soul…though I tend to dwell in the past nowdays as far as rock is concerned. (BTW: Nice recommendation Mask, dude!)

 

I love Jazz. If you guys want to get to grips with the cool, funky stuff, and not the boring crap, check out stuff like Herbie Mann Returns to the Village Gate (Atlantic 1963), Herbie Hancock, especially Thrust, Maiden Voyage, Flood (cost me £100 on vinyl), collections like the German Mojo Jazz series, the Italian Groovy collections (by Irma), and the Partners in Crime collections for sublime folk/jazz/funk/psychedelic grooves. And if you want to get really real check out Miles Davis from the late 60s to early 70s. He had dudes like Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Josef Zawinul, in his band at the time. Pioneering recordings that included the legendry Bitches Brew and my favorite recording of them all, In a Silent Way. If you want to listen to a recording that transforms how you appreciate music, this is the one. You can’t really describe it in any other way. It haunts to the soul in it’s beauty and sheer magnificence and has never really been equaled. Most rock musicians will state it was one of their major influences in music, and the turning point in music at the end of 60s.

 

Brazilian music rocks! To much to say here. I learnt my stuff from a genuine Brazilian DJ, and without sounding to big headed was part of the movement that got the real stuff on the dance floors here in London in the early to mid 90s. Godfather of Brazilian music is Jorge Ben. If you can afford it go get his very first recording on Japanese import, ‘Samba Esquema.’ And be haunted by samba from 1963 that transformed Brazilian music forever after. Loads of Brazilan artists that litter my shelves, Bebeto, Trio Mocoto, Airto, Ed Lincoln, Os Catedraticos, Banda Black Rio and Orlandivo, to name but a few; but be very careful if you fancy branching out in this direction. Brazilian artists have had a horrible habit of re-recording their classics on tacky collections in a manor that would horrify artists in the US and Europe. Given I’m not ashamed to say I know what I’m on about here, if you fancy giving Brazilian music a go, send me a PM and I’ll recommend some affordable hotstuff.

 

And when it comes to the classics, there is nothing more beautiful than Peer Gynt by Grieg, sung in Norwegian, in the bath.

 

Be diverse! But don’t settle for the crap the record companies try to shove down our throats no. It’s an insult to real artists.

See, you guys over there in Europe have SO much variety as far as . . . well, anything, as compared to the U.S. Here in the U.S. I can't find ANYTHING that isn't from the U.S. and if I ask for it, people stare at me and think that because I want to buy foreign music I am anti-American. What stupidty! Then again, most people here in the states have been brainwashed to think the way the system dictates and don't dare to think freely, much less independantly. I would buy better music, but, well, recently a foreign-exchange student from Belgium--or at least I think he's from Belgium--got beat-up pretty badly because he said he didn't like American music. That's right, he got beat-up for it! I think you can tell that was the motivation for this thread and I don't mean to turn this political, but it's the truth. That's the main reason I'm really into System Of A Down. It's not so much the metal or the rock, but the views and the independent thought they show. Okay, I better get off my soap-box before I get REALLY political. Simply put: "Hey, Jahled, I hope you've got an extra room, I'm moving in!"

Don't cuss your own country to bad dude! I have the luxory of living in London. If you go out of town anywhere in England you get the same old record company shuve in your face crap in your average record store. And I guess it's the same for Europe and you guys in the states. To get the real stuff i'm into I have to spend serious amounts of time searching the web, all the subsequent frustration of finding all the searches on Japanese web sites (and why is it all the cool re-issue stuff is only available in Japan?), that; and loats of time using my fingers in 'specialist' music stores around town. It isn't commercially viable for every small town high street to stock the rare stuff, is it? Most people in society simply don't have the time to immerse themselves in music so deeply they see beyond what's shuved in their face, or ears by main stream radio stations.

Interesting. I guess my assumption that Europe is far more independent minded and free-thinking due to a far more diverse culture than the U.S. I assumed such because of the fact that you have so many different persons from so many different walks of life right nearby. I don't even know if that was worded correctly.

I think I'm probably quite into the same stuff as SOCL. Nothing like a good bit of SOAD or Rammstein, Offspring are pretty good, so are Rage Against The Machine, and Foo Fighters, and Evanescence, and Puddle of Mudd, and loads of other bands, but I also like classical music, and ilm music. John Williams is the God of music.

 

I like Bernstein and the other musicals, I like Marc Cohn and Elvis, and the Beatles, i even like a bit of Elton John, and Meatloaf and Bon Jovi.

Right now I'm hooked on the Lost Highway soundtrack. Usually though I listen to Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Rage Against the Machine, The Doors, Beatles, David Bowie, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and other such Alt rock bands.

Toxicity is a great way to get introduced to System Of A Down for that CD is arguably the best of the three that have been so far released. Now, Elvis, you must get the first, self-titled CD and the third one, Steal This Album! You must . . . it is your destiny!
