Hey there. I have been anticipating this game for a quite some time as most of you have as well. I was just wondering what the best way was to improve my RTS skills. I have a few RTS games to practice from any reccomedations from this list?

-SW: Battlegrounds (w/ clone campaigns)

-Warcraft III

-Warcraft II

-StarCraft (w/ Brood War Expansion)

-C&C: Generals (w/ Zero Hour Expansion)

I think thats it. Any reccomendations or other souces for strategic info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are other great rts out there, like Dawn of War, Rome: Total War, and so i'm told, Total Anilation- that one i havn't played, only heard about. Rebellion would be good, get u in the feel for starwars and a sort of rts based game. Homeworld maybe? I dunno there's a few really good ones out there.

Homeworld 2 with Star wars mod, in RTS section theres a link. That should be good for space fights. For ground like battles I have no clue. Well you could try Battlegrounds but it sucks now. Maybe Civ 3 ?

For space, Homeworld 2 with star wars mod (warlords)

for ground, Dawn of war ?

Or if you can still locate any, Rebellion ?

I donno, just some thoughts.

Rebellion's a good Idea if you can stand having a week long game with lots of saves and a poorly worked interface. CIV 3 with all the expansions.

AOE2 with Expansions

Maybe Age of Mythology (haven't played it much!)

ST Birth of the Federation, (if you can find one!!)

uum,

AOE 2 w exspansion/battlegrounds if you REALLY want the star wars, same package anyways.

well what i am doing really is just opening up to a flexible strategy. usually in these games i just amass and conquer but prolly wont work for this =(

and a way i do it(i dont have the latest/greatest RTs right now) but i do play strategic board games with friends like risk, monopoly, etc.

also any of the C&C games would be good!

I've have you now - Lord Vader

well Ao2 and Battlegrounds r both crap games its not going to be very good examples of RTS's Homeworld and rome Total War woould be better examples of of the aspects of the game.

If you want to brush upo your skills I would recommend to play Dawn of War.

First of all the community is very friendly and not that "pro" (because it's not that big) and newcomers are always welcome. Secondly I think in terms of micromanagement EaW will be similar to Dawn of War. (or at least closer to it than to other games) [in my personal oppinion!]

Another game I would recommend is C&C Generals: Zero Hour.

I don't think Homeworld is a good choice. I mean it's a great game. But it's totally 3D - won't help for the "2D" empire at war space battles.

i would recommend hardcore micromanagement games. CCG ZH if you don't mind having losts of bug and imbalances. Just for rushing purposes cause this is what Zero hour is all about. CnC RA2 for tank fights. Learning how to move them - how to use infantry (dogs) to catch enemy fire. (don't know how important this will be in EAW cause they said all units would attack those units which will be damaged most by them. / grouping tanks in groups of 4 - four shots kill another tank so if 7 tanks attack one there's much firepower lost ....) Maybe Warcraft III or Starcraft for micromanagement - most clicks per second etc. skills.

Strategies can't be trained with other games - they will evolve the moment the game is out.

For the Ground Battles, use C&C series as the same group of people made it.

For the Space Battles, Homeworld 1 & 2 are the best choice even though homeworld is 3d and EaW is 2d.

The AoE series is a bad choice as the battle control will most likely be C&C in nature and not like AoE's.

If you get a chance, grab a copy of Rebellion (e-bay, bargain bin, etc). This will give you the best look, IMO, of the galactic map, missions and space combat next to playing EAW. Ground combat is non-existant as it is kind of dice rolled in a way, but nowhere else are you going to get the Galactic + Space Combat combo that is going to be a critical precursor to any ground combat you are prepairing for in EAW. I do agree with Homeworld 1 or 2 as a good idea of how the space combat will feel, but still there is not really a good substitute for the galactic portion of EAW other than Rebellion.
