Character Names

Ok, I know it's a little stupid to start a thread when I'm headed away, but it will give me a hand with something I've been struggling with for several months.

Basically I lead a small group of people on a machinima project, creating a series based on the Star Wars universe, set after the films. Now, while this isn't written fan fiction so much, it is fictional, and I do write the scripts. One of my major problems is that I'm exceedingly picky about the character names, and as a result I have written characters with no names.

Basically I'd like to hear any suggestions for characters. The list so far consists of: Three male Dark Jedi, four Jedi, one of which is a shimmering blue ghost, an astromech droid, a protocol droid, a female bounty hunter and a female ex-Dark Jedi in the role of a spy. Now I don't expect you to come up with anything to fit the characters wonderfully because my description isn't great, but any ideas are welcome.

Even if you can't think of a name that would fit I'd still like to hear it anyway. With any luck this thread might also help some people beginning to write a piece who struggle over names. So don't hesitate to come up with names anyone can use. I'll catch up with this in two weeks.

Three male Dark Jedi... are we talking Sith title of Darth? If so:

1: Darth Veruun

2: Darth Hanak

3: Darth Regenek

If not, and we're talking names like "Jerec" and "Yun" from Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, then just remove the Darth title.

Four Jedi names could consist of:

4: Cious Kemliss

5: Rey-Dan Olijak

6: Jason Frei

7: Ajin Chora-Nos

With the astromech and protocol droids, I assume you're hoping to rekindle some kind of Threepio-Artoo relationship? Nice touch. A basic set of droid names could include:

8: R9-F9

9: E-8G0

Female names are always difficult. A bounty hunter could be:

10: Faresh Vardoon

Spies have to be mysterious, but the addition of the Dark Side needs a vicious edge, so a name could be:

11: Lady Zequin

I don't know, I've just made all those up in about five minutes. I do that with all my names, just blurt out something that doesn't sound human (although the one Jedi name "Jason" is obviously a humanoid, if you have one). If it sounds weird, you're writing good science fiction names!

I will give some hints for you (and others)

Dark Jedi

Dark Jedi usually go by their normal names eg; Mara Jade, Asajj Ventress, Jerec. Some do have Sith titles, but only if they are also a sith eg; Darth Vader was both a Dark Jedi and a Sith Lord.

Jedi

Jedi can basically be named anything whether it is a three dashed name eg; Ki-Adi-Mundi, one with a Dash connecting the first two words eg; Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, a one word name eg; Yoda, Atris, a two word name eg; Yarael Poof, Mace Windu, Plo Koon, Thame Cerulian, Luke Skywalker, or they can have a name with the last two words connected by another hyphen eg; Kaan Fun-We, Aria Iri-Nan, Ulic Qel-Droma

Droids

Usually an assortment of numbers and letters that (excluding astromech droids) can really by connected by a hyphen anywhere eg; TC-14 and C-3PO are same generation Protocol droids (based on style) but they are seperated in different places. R2 units or the like are always split after the first two characters by the hyphen eg; T3-M4, R2-D2, R4-P17.

There is no emotion; there is peace.

There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.

There is no passion; there is serenity.

There is no chaos; there is harmony.

There is no death; there is the force.

Yeah, they're the basics, but like I said I'm just a little picky with names, so it was unlikely I'd find something there suitable. But then again, why pass up the opportunity becasuse it was unlikely.

The R2 droid I have is currently named I8-U2.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. It's a comedy.

Dude. R2 units begin with the title R2 whatever.

Droids are given the name R2-xxx.

C-3P0 is a 3P0 droid with the name of C for Cybernetica.

I know. I've already had that debate already (not here). The problem with it being a comedy is that humor doesn't always naturally equate with accuracy. As it is I've already had to nickname the other droid for ease of character introduction.

The way I see it, I'm no expert on Star Wars and even if I was, the real experts would find something there I would write wrong. The whole fact I have at least 2 Jedi who survived the purges is bound to be a matter of controvery, but I write it to work in the sense it will be fun and light hearted, not to be 100% spot on. I try to get it as true to the story world as possible, but in certain cases I have to bend the rules slightly. If it gets nitpicked, so be it. I hate to be serious. Hence the droid name.

If you need a reason for his dumb name, his master (Now named Husky) isn't all that bright... and actually thinking about it, neither is the droid...

In terms of naming convention I try to find something, an object, an adjective, something that sums up the nature of the character in a word. It has to be something memorable, which is probably the problem I have with the names suggested. Our Dark Jedi leader for example is currently named Nefarious. Sounds cool, is memorable, describes nature.

Then again that's just me. Other people may have other preferences regarding naming convention.

Don't really worry about it. I just posted that because I didn't have any decent names I could think of and it was for the benefit of people who are new to the star wars universe and writing. It didn't come off the top of my head either I just did a few searches on wikipedia and put a bit of analysis of the different names in.

Believe me I am no expert on Star Wars. I gave up trying to be 100% correct ages ago. (Tyranus, I actually decided to change Kaan Fun-We's lightsaber to blue because I started to like that colour much more then yellow) Recently my brother borrowed the Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith Incredible Cross Section books and I decided that I would use those resources to reduce the risk of being screamed at and bashed (hypothetically) by the supreme Star Wars canon etc experts.

That's why they call it a canon. They use it to shoot down all your ideas :P. More gunpowder I think they need.

But yeah, as long as the story works and remains consistant in the setting or story world, then there really is no issue. When writing for fun, if you get bogged down in the details it can become tedious and not worth doing. Thing is, did George Lucas stick with all his original ideas? No. Why? Because in order to make a good story you can't be restricted by obsolete and easily avoidable facts. Either you make efforts to change the ideals or you just have to acccept it isn't perfect. Either way at least it's there written, and written the way that you want it to be. There's no point in...

wait...

...I think they have more gunpowder now. FIND COVER!

Intelligence and Utility?

Sounds good. Wasn't planning on making any direct mention of the droid's longer name, but that's darn good. If it turns up in there don't be too surprised, since it's one of those things I'm adding to the base of information along with character histories etc. Stuff that will never turn up on screen, but just helps with the characters and plot. Thanks Stellar.

So, Obi-Wan Kenobi's faithful astromech droid from the prequels, R4-P17, is a massive mistake?

No. As that was an R4 droid. It was originally completely connected to his Jedi Fighter however over the clone wars him and Anakin managed to get a body for him.

I said R2 units and the like that really should have been astromech droids and I am sorry for the confusion.

Don't worry about it. I don't think there was any confusion over what you said, at least not by me anyway.

Ok, the point of this thread may not matter anymore. From the look of things the dropouts (voice actors that is) may have killed the project we started. Plus there's a whole heap of troubles on top of that, so while the characters names were just a small issue while things were running smooth, now they seem almost insignificant. :(
