Hex locations anyone ?

Hi again,

the third thing I started in the semester-break was a savegame-editor.

I already found the characters, ships, some troops, fighters and resource buildings, but : no chance so far with the planets. :(

Does anyone know the hex values for the planets, or a site where this is explained ? I even mailed LEC, but their 'Web-Jedi' didn't even bother replying with a 'NO'.

Um, why do you need a savegame editor when you have the force... i mean RebEd?

I dont see what you could do with a savegame editor that you couldn't have set up with RebEd beofre you started the game, or is that the point?

The hex values for the planets is located in the file 'SYSTEMSD.dat' in the GData folder in your SWRebellion folder. The hex values for the sectors is located in the file 'SECTORSD.dat'. To get the hex locations(this process is tedious), make a back-up copy of your SYSTEMSD.dat, edit one value of the Systems option in RebEd, save it, then compare the original SYSTEMS.dat and the back-up copy you made. The systems are in alpabetical order and are grouped by sector. Meaning, you would see Coruscant and Balmorra in the same area of the file. You'll start to recognize patterns, where a new system starts, where it ends, etc.

Ahh Hastings, always a source of knowledge :D

Thanks, I'll try it !

Elvis: that was also something we discussed in the semi-old forum. I had this idea, cause with a savegame-editor you could for example make certain scenarios, like the escape from Hoth, or Thrawn's siege of Coruscant, these kind of things.

Also you can edit your fleets, characters, etc. .So this can be a good alternative to 'repair' character values that went wrong, or you can let the Rebels have imperial vessels and vice versa...

These are things RebEd can and could not do, cause RebEd is for setting up the pre-conditions, then the game applies the values (if there is a variance for the stats).

You can of course set the options that you can build the vessels on any side, although I don't know, if the game will complain, if you allow too many. I heard of a minimum character limit once, so it is at least possible.

I believe I misread your question...are you trying to find the hex locations in the save game file? If you are it's a whole different procedure. The way I described was if you wanted to change the values for every game. And now if you'll excuse me, I messed up rebexe.exe again; anyone know how to tell rebexe.exe to read a different movie file then the one listed in the .exe?

Yeah, I'm trying to find these things in the savegames, but the structure could be the same, I'll have to look it up sometime.

You could try this, either if there's a registry-entry telling you where the cd is, or you use something like daemon-tools to play from an cd-image of your original cd. You could then try replacing the old movies in the image file, while still using the original names. That should work :D

It is a registry handle that's telling where the movie is located. Do you know how I could change this?

No, not really. I'm just telling Rebellion to play a different movie than the original one. Looks like you're going to do a bit of registry editing for it. For some reason, rebexe.exe can check itself and change back to its original settings. I tried telling rebexe.exe to play mdata.001 instead of .000. Didn't work when I tried running the game, and when I checked the rebexe.exe it had changed back to .000.

But would it be possible to include bits from the films and therefore make your own movies? If so how would you do this and what tools would you use, where in the game files do i need to go?

If the movie location is stored in the Rebellion EXE, you should try setting it to "Read-Only" after you change the location. That might just help :)

So you could maybe use Vader boarding Executor from Empire Strikes Back?

I experimented with the cd image and aside from complaining about the filename (why do I always get UPCASE names on some cds when they are not in reality... ?) it seemed to work perfectly 8)

As for encoding the movies: the conversion tools should still be available on http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm .I think you should use the same resolution as the original ones have (dunno from memory now).

You don't need to create the whole CD image. All I did was make a crack and tell REBEXE.EXE to read the movie files from my hard-drive rather than my CD drive.

Good job Hastings! I knew you could make a crack for the EXE... people always do :)

--It's a good thing that we can now replace movies.. yet the question remains, can anyone make some? Short ones? :):?:

I didn't go as far as creating whole images, well I actually tried first, but then I remembered that Rebellion doesn't mind if you just put all the data like a normal multi-session on your cd. So this was all that had to be done.

How about scenes from the movies ?

If you mean the Star Wars movies, the ones made by LucasFilm, that wouldn't be a very good idea.. they could sue us very fast.

If you mean fan-made movies, I don't know about that, after all.. they already are available for download, so all we'd be doing is using them.

On the other hand, creating your own movie (doesn't have to be long, a minute, maybe less) would be awesome!

It doesn't even have to be too complex... For example, some B-wings going for a bombing run, with TIE defenders gaining up on them, and then E-wings come out of nowhere... hehe....

And if you aren't feeling up to it, just say so, I'll leave you alone :)

I'd forgotten that they'd sue us, although if we're not making a profit from it, i thought they couldn't sue us?

I guess that would go for a movie made from a compilation of clips, something similar to the start of GB and Clone Wars expansion.

One lesson I've learned is with Lucas, not-for-profit makes no difference. It's using the material without their permission. Something about the "purity" of the story or some-such trash. I suppose we're just lucky we can talk about Star Wars without being thrown into court....

One thing you guys should know, the movies you make have to be in Smacker version 2.0 format. I haven't found a way around this. Smacker is the movie player implemented in the game and I have no idea how we can change this. Looks like we're SOL. Anybody know where to get a copy of Smacker v. 2.0?
