Reading the DAT files

i have a hunch as to how to increase the amount of characters/ships/fighters but i would need to look into the DAT files, does anyone know a program that will read these??

I've heard dude21 talk about a visual basic decompiler, is that anything you could work with?

Any hexeditor or viewer.

Hex Editor would be good, I use Ultra Edit for example.

 

We had a hunch in that direction, too. But you'd have to add too many references, since the chars for example are not only in the DAT files, they're also referenced in some of the dlls. The numbers in the dlls don't have that many space inbetween, where you could paste new entries and I just don't know if it would still work in the game, if you'd append the new entries.

 

But give it a try anyway, perhaps you have a new angle, that hasn't been thought of before

Well, Hastings and I tried to add new things by adding new entries to the Dlls and the dat files but we failed.
