I wish graphics programs were more stable. @Tex: As Kaja said, normal mapping is a form of effect for games used to make 3d models look smoother and hold more detail within a texture rather than using a high detailed model.Its primary use is within games where a model needs to be as low poly as possible. It was first seen in great effect in Doom 3, where every object had a normal map as well. Half Life 2 and FEAR also use this technique, to name a few.
