@Tex: As Kaja said, normal mapping is a form of effect for games used to make 3d models look smoother and hold more detail within a texture rather than using a high detailed model.

Its primary use is within games where a model needs to be as low poly as possible. It was first seen in great effect in Doom 3, where every object had a normal map as well. Half Life 2 and FEAR also use this technique, to name a few. Modern "AAA" grade games are leaning towards this technology (especially 2nd gen consoles, the PS3 and XBox 360) as it's far more processor friendly than an actual high poly model and makes graphics look great.
