Thirdly: Space-based weapons have been banned by treaty since 1967 (Outer Space Treaty).

Tex, not for nothing, I wish you would have mentioned that at an earlier date. It might have proven to be more interesting for my research paper.

That was already a topic of much debate on another board. Specifically Nuclear arms are banned from space. I dont recall anything about lasers or Tungston Rods though.

from placing nuclear weapons or any other weapons of mass destruction

So if it's not a weapon of Mass destruction it's ok. So that means we can use anything short of a nuke and still be within treaty.:twisted:

Def, nuclear weapons are not the only WMD.. and besides.. going back to one of the older posts..

EDIT: Here we are The Rods From God

Upon impact, the rod would be capable of producing all the effects of an earth-penetrating nuclear weapon, without any of the radioactive fallout.

Definately sounds like a WMD to me... really guys, in all reality yes.. its a program for the defense department.. and that more than likely means it could be used for war efforts.. but again, it never said it HAD to be nukes or even WMD's the Aurora is simply a hypersonic aircraft which goes into (near)space in order to traverse (close to) the ENTIRE earth in roughly two hours.... that fits the article.. almost to a tee... it never said it would be space based or for that matter, HAD to be in space for two hours.. it said simply that it COULD aquire a target on the other side of the earth in two hours...

I doubt it would take 2 hours to orbit the Earth. The Vostok 1 orbited the Earth in under two hours. I believe that 50 years later, our modern ships can do it much faster. My belief based on that article is that the AIRCRAFT would orbit Earth while attempting to acquire a target through communication with station on the ground.

Not to beat a dead horse.. but.. its not orbit Rob... here.. i was trying to find a graphic from popular science.. (or was it Popular Mechanics).. that illustrated what they are talking about.. either way.. this one is pretty damn good...

You can see, that they are talking about a plane which will deliver ordnance on the other side of the earth within two hours... it would be considerably less if the flight path were shorter.... (its a two hour trip from New York to Tokyo in one of those planes..)

That is a nice pic there JH. I concede my point based on this article.

But still, an orbital space station is the way to go. That would be the ultimate power in the universe.

Everyone give this hilarious fic a read! It's an alternate timeline which starts after the Thrawn Trilogy and addresses some of the really, REALLY weird stuff that happened in the EU.

Those kind of weapons shall be banned!

I´ve mentioned that allready on another occassion: there are other ways to handle such kind of situations. I´ve got the feeling that security and police officers use their tasers all too quick, because it eases their work. German police hasn´t got the need to use those kind of weapons and our criminals aren´t less violent.

Who cares at all?!
