I wasn't even old enough to remember seeing it until about 90-91ish. In the 91-97 period I watched the movies enough that the version my Parents had taped off TV wore out.

So we got our VHS box set.

I can't seem to find any pictures of that version. It wasn't the enhanced version I know that.

I'd take a picture of it with our digital camera but my Dad took it with him on his latest trip to China.

Check out the link I posted at the beginning of this thread. It's a picture of that boxset, the final VHS set before the Special Editions.

That's not it. I think it was the previous version before that.

(I'll look over the box see if I can get something useful.)

Hmm... *Looks arround*

A scanner is fine too.

The date on the bottom of the case says 1988 even though I know we got it a few years after that.

This is still my preferred version to watch because it doesn't have any of the crappy '97 CG work or newer Anakin makeover. (Or Boba Fett's voice changed.)

It seems that the box set I was referring to was the final uneditied form of the original trilogy to be pressed on VHS. It was done in 1995, so it seems very likely that the set you have, D, would have been on sale until then. After that, they came out with the Special Edition box set form with the gold fullscreen box and a silver widescreen box. Then the final iteration before the DVD release was this one, which was released in 2002 before AOTC. Then we have the DVD version...no need to go into that, eh?

I didn't notice that Fett's voice changed in the SE. I call shenanagins!!!
Actually, that didn't happen until the DVD mutation of the Special Editions in 2004. Edited by SOCL

The DVD set that came out a little while ago. Ask SOCL.

Scanned the back pannels of all three VHS cases and put them up btw.

I was already typing that up even before you make the previous now refrenced post.

So... um... we're good.

Grrr...I don't understand the SE. It accomplished absolutely nothing. The Jabba scene was a joke (because Jabba was CGI), the Wampa scene was not needed, and the new-and-"improved" Max Reebo Band in ROJ sucked!!!

Though then again, I must take that back. The SE did accomplish something. It got me (and many others) further into Star Wars then ever before. The hype of the SE coming to the theatre was incredible, and it upped my nerdiness factor tremendously as I slowly marked dates off my calander in anticipation of their release. So yeah, the changes Lucas made sucked, were horrible, had a negative impact on the originals, but at the same time it added to the SW hype that got me in as far as I am today. And I guess that in the end, that was his plan. To get new fans with new material and solidify the original fan base with promises of improvements and future prequels.

You think too cynically, Rob. He clearly did it to accomplish is "definitive" vision of Star Wars...despite going back and changing it to his "(ultra) definitive" vision a few years later. Next time around, Yoda's going to be replaced by Jar-Jar. Wait and see! 8O

It wasn't changed in the SE tapes, but rather the DVD releases since those were after the prequel movies.

I am just old enough to have seen all movies in a cinema. ANH just blew that young kid I was by then. But my favorite memory is seeing Empire Strikes Back:

I was ten years young back then and the very best moment was when there were Star Destroyers on the screen. To me it seemed that the big space of the cinema melted with the vast emptiness of space itself and then there was this rumble of the ISD and, of course, the Imperial March. Just one big sensual experience. Cinema has never been better :)

Asteroids do not concern me...

i voted 80-83 just because those were the years that saw the release of both ESB and ROTJ... and those movies both rocked.. i got to see ROTJ in the theaters.. so maybe thats why i remember that year fondly.. but i really got into it more from 83 on... but still.. if we are talking the best years for star wars i really think 80-83 because thats when the fan base solidified in my opinion.. or at least became an actual entity that was acknowledged..

oh and as I was reading through the thread (I had more than 2 pages to make up) I was about to go find a picture of the box set Def was talking about.. from the net or my pictures of my stuff (i catalog my belongings).. then i saw the scans 8O nice scans def... thats the one i thought you were talking about.. the only set of the movies i like really... even though I own a few of the released versions from there on... i still think those are the best..

I have this box set as well. It was the first THX edition of the Star Wars Trilogy released in mid-90's. It has several scenes from the theatrical release that were previously axed from prior VHS releases (ex. The asteriod smashing the bridge of the ISD in ESB).

I didn't realize there were additional scenes that weren't included in the theatrical version. 8O This certainly doesn't mean it's a Special Edition form, does it?

I always wondered why some of the older fans I knew seemed amazed by the asteroid taking out the bridge of the Star Destroyer and the disappearing hologram of that ship's captain. Nothing new to me since I started watching that particular edition.

What else?

No no... you misunderstand me. The scene was in the original screen release of The Empire Strikes Back. However, when the trilogy was released to VHS, George Lucas cut these scenes and others from the movie. I think this had to do with the length of movie and the available length of storage on VHS. As VHS technology progressed we began to see consumer tapes with 8hr capacity vs the original 6hr recoring at low quality. Because of the increases in VHS storage, when he optimized the film for THX film he reinserted these original scenes back into the film.

Oh, I see. Still, that would explain why some my older fan friends had never noticed that particular scene until the Special Editions (and some not until the DVD release! 8O ). What other scenes were re-added? If you know, I'm interested. Blame it on the history thing in me.

Those were the first videos I had of the Trilogy!!!

However, last year while rummaging through my uncles house after he passed away (he lived alone and died old- a life long bachelor and he loved every minute of it God bless him), and found that he had the original Star Wars VHS from when each one was released after its theatrical debut...STILL SHRINKWRAPPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone collect the action figures? I never had any from the 80's, but when they made the new figures in the 90's I got some of those. All of mine are still in their packages too.

I got:

Luke Skywalker - A New Hope

Luke Skywalker - Empire Strikes Back (hand is removable)

Luke Skywalker - Return of the Jedi (Jedi Knight)

Darth Vader

Han Solo

Princess Leia - A New Hope

Princess Leia - Return of the Jedi (slave outfit)

Storm Trooper

Obi Wan Kenobi - A New Hope

Emperor Palpatine

Lando Calrissian - Empire Strikes Back

Nah. By the 90s I was buying up the Micro Machine sets instead. I think Im missing like 1 or 2 of the last playsets to come out. But they were really neat.

This is what they looked like

This is a pic of the Stormtrooper. There was also:

Darth Vader/ Cloud City Carbonite Room

C3PO/ Mos Eisly

R2D2/ Jabba Palace

Royal Guard/ Death Star II Throne Room

And there were also non-opening sets, that were just big landscapes. THere was the Battle of Endor, Battle of Hoth, Outside Jabba Palace and the Sarlaac Pit.

This is the best pic I could find for the Battle of Hoth Set

And the best was this HUGE Millenium Falcoln that opened up. It was sooo awesome and huge. Man, those things were great. Another reason why the 90's rocked for Star Wars.

Sinister,

Yeah, I collected the action figures back then, but sold them all since. If my memory serves me well, I had:

-Han Solo in Carbonite

-Dash Rendar

-Chewbacca (Shadows of the Empire)

-Luke Skywalker (Tatooine)

-Boba Fett

-Bossk

-original Admiral Ackbar (80s)

I don't remember any others, that was so long ago. My friend Matt had a ton of them, including the Millenium Falcon for the action figures, which was fantastic.

The first link doesn´t work, rob.

A friend bought this one about ten years ago. Nice but too small for my taste.

I´ve collected SW Action Figures from the beginning on. And only those from 1977 to 1986. I´ve got about 20 or so, can´t remember, because I have them in a storage room. There are of course Vader, Luke, Leia, C3PO, Dengar, Bib Fortuna, Ben Kenobi and lots of creatures. I never owned Han and R2 or any Stormtrooper. :( And my old Power Droid ( Gonk) has been gone lost or stolen. Thought about to begin to collect them again, because there are lots for sale on ebay. We´ll see. http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/konfus/a015.gif

Who cares at all?!
