Resource editor question

Hi!

 

I have downloaded the Resource Hacker, and I can't open the .dll files. The .dll files don't appear on file list.

 

How can I open the .dll files with a resource editor?

What option need I have to change on my computer, if this is the cause of the problem?

 

Please help me!

I've never seen it behaving otherwise as opening the .dlls in the Rebellion directory. If it can't open a file it usually says something like 'file is not a win32pe file...', but you need no previous configuration, or installation. Just unzip and run it.

Resource Hacker, as in give yourself a whole pile of maintenance points? Why not just increase the production of your mines and refineries. By the way, if you want the most possible do you want maximum production for both the mines and the refineries, or is there a better balance?

Okay i checked out the Resource Hacker web site, but how does that relate to Rebellion, what can i actually do with it?

I think it was named Resource Hacker, cause if you write Win-progs, for instance in MS-VC++ and you include Icons, Bitmaps,... then these things are called resources. R.H. is just a generic editor for these files. You can try it on other things, like you Windows calculator, for example. I tried it on the tactical.dll and found the structure for the models (among other things) and that's how it started :) (well, sort of).

 

The link is dead ? Oops, that was the original link in the 'About'-dialog of the prog. I always get a new version on my Pc-World cds, so I don't bother downloading :roll:

Ok, I got as far as replacing the "close up view" of the star galleon, to that old eclipse class. But I forgot to texture it. How difficult would it be to texture it. Actualy I got a little confused in the tut about texturing. What do I need program-wise?

Well, that's somehow my prob too 8)

But since I found no way to add texures as bitmaps (like the original models have), I sort of cheated, applying colors to certain parts of the models. This way the model will not be plain white and with a little patience you can even add stuff, like the drive-flares I did for the Executor. These are just really flat cylinders, with a orange-red color on them, then I scaled 'em down and stuffed them into the drives :wink:

 

Btw: Venix, is it possible that LW cannot export to other formats, than .lwo ? Converting between .lwo and .3ds creates some strange effects using Lith.

The_Mask, I replaced the Star Galleon with your SSD. The problem is i replaced all three models for the view(close, far, ?) I got a message about a compressed format for the last one? No idea, but I replaced it anyway and it crashed the game. I tried deleting, renaming and replace my edited Tactical.dll but It wouldn't allow me, so after I uninstalled I got a message saying to restart the computer to delete certain files. BTW this is NOT a complaint. I just want to know if I should only replace the first two models: 2620 and 2621. The 3rd model confuses me, any idea what it is?

Hi,

the three views are close, medium and far. Although you don't need to replace all three it looks kinda weird if you don't :)

The original models look less and less detailed, as you go farther 'away' in your view. I think that was for the sake of slower computers. Like I wrote in my tut, I didn't feel that ambitious to actually create 3 models and the one works fine for me so far 8)

 

The only thing I can imagine, that lead to the message about the compressed file format is, that you may have entered something wrong in the 'replace resource' dialog. It's boring and sometimes I get confused too, but the order for the three fields is

-301 (general for all models)

-model (like you said 2620, 2621, or 2622 for close, medium and far)

-1033 for language, this also applies to every model.

 

If you have a different value for the language in your original models, then use this. Although I can't imagine that, I'm living in Germany and the only version ever sold here that I saw was the US version. I don't know, if the value differs in Supremacy, the UK version.

Anyone with Supremacy here, who might know ?

Don't get worried now, I could have F---ed something up. Off the topic, how are things with converting new models? You and Hastings are really getting my hopes up. Keep up the good work. As for the bad work, post that too... Been there, done that, hate to do it again. BTW a lot of my friends really love that Name length and Description editor. Thanx :P

Igor, that's almost exactly what I do :D

Although, if I see something from another model, or if it looks better than the XWA one, I take this one. But I plan to make all the XWA models as well. Of course, if anyone would also like to make some models, we could maximize our output, if no one makes the same model twice (economics lecture from yesterday still haunting my mind, sorry).

 

While I was buisy fragging some youngsters at a LAN party last weekend (friday to sunday) and between gaming and somewhere visiting the university I've actually been working on new models :)

My last experiments were the YT-1300, the YT-2400, the VSD and the ISD.

All of them still need some tweaking here and there, so I don't want to show the w.i.p. yet.

 

Markaine, thankx again for the praises, that's lifting my spirits. Especially after the 3 hours of math I just had 8O .... breathe ... let the force flow ... yes ... 8) ... ah, now I feel better.
