Haha, Rob, perfect. Sorry for a delay and in coming across this, but, yes, I find the situation amusing. Romans coming before Greeks--what will they come up with next? Kids these days... Anyway, you seem to have more patience or are at least nicer than me. I would have raised my hand and when called upon said:

"Professer, so-and-so says the Romans came before the Greeks, the Greeks taking ideas from the Romans. What do you think?"

College degree has become the norm now, at least undergrad.. to unlock the job market.

College degree is the new "high school diploma". High school diploma must be the new "middle school diploma"... :)

Anyway, it really is a problem teaching to the lowest common denominator. Not that many teachers really do teach. Like Aenivae said, it is just work with no real point. And those that really want to improve and learn have to just waste their time doing it, or attempt to get out as fast as possible.

To prove my point about math:

Whoever that teacher was... is pathetic

Dude... That ought to be on a YTMND. What kind of ridiculous school hires a teacher like that? Most people know that a mile is greater than a kilometer, anyways...

The music did it for me.

Evaders, you and I think the same way! :) Indeed, the undergraduate degree has become what the high-school diploma once was, and a high-school diploma is merely like passing 8th grade or dropping out of high-school. If more emphasis was put on actually teaching and educating children rather than passing them... I hate to get political, but I hear a lot of complaints about "No Child Left Behind" in this regard as teachers are virtually forced to pass the students or find their jobs at risk. Some teachers, then, find it easier to simply pass the students like some sort of quota rather than actually teach them, especially since most students could care less. Really, I mean, there isn't enough emphasis on the learning aspect as much as the "just stay in school" course. This isn't to say staying in school isn't important, but the down side to forcing people to stay in school and forcing them to take certain classes "burns out" students and, well, they get bored and stop caring. I can tell you, I was only actually interested in going to school after taking a semester off...

That and you start to get people in college who really dont belong there. And they all expect the same treatment they got in High School... which just isn't going to happen. I'm sorry to say and I don't mean to offend anyone... but, COLLEGE ISN'T FOR EVERYONE!!! The sooner the American society realizes this... the better off everyone will be...

It's sorta like reading... kids like to read until they are forced to read. Kids like to learn until they are forced to learn. Really I don't remember anything from high school besides the math and physics. Nothing against those history and english, and other liberal arts majors, but I really didn't see the point.

I don't know if that letter is real. But YTMND makes the point quite well!

Perhaps they need to learn maths this way?

Who'd have thunk it - making maths easy, and fun 8O

(No, not a typo with "thunk" - just a reference to Bill Hicks)

wow.. thats a really cool trick... im gonna have to keep trying it to see if it works all the time... my question is though.. who says where you draw the lines?... that would be a source of confusion i think.. but still pretty cool..

It's a decent way to do it. Basically it puts in a graphical form the way you would do multiplication. Multiply each digit by digit and add terms.

Fascinating vid Krytos! It reminds me of those info-mmercials where some guy is pushing a "new method" of doing (for example) long multiplication in the student's head without pen and paper.

[cheesy infommercial announcer voice]Come see the fantasical new method of math. Here we have little Timmy who's in the fourth grade. Now Timmy, without paper and pen, can you you tell the TV audience what's ... 1,719 times 479?[/cheesy infommercial announcer voice]

[Timmy](*** staring into the air, chewing on his lips ***) uh, 823 thousand, ... and ... 401[/Timmy]

I've always wondered how they did that :?

As for Evaders letter, I like the "In the future, Alex would be better off simply accepting my teachings without resistance". He's a BORG! RESISTANCE IS FUTILE! Resist Alex! Resist!

Finally, after years of hard work I am the Supreme Sith Warlord! Muwhahahaha!! What?? What do you mean "there's only two of us"?

The teacher's point may have been to see how many students would blindly follow the lesson, regardless of the accuracy. Disciplinary action, if it was actually enforced, would lead to the teacher's dismissal.

Now, as far as blindly following the teacger goes, here are some reasons students would do this:

Students live in a culture of Disciplinarianism (not sure if the word exists, but I think the implication is immediately apparent) and are therefore afraid to contradict the higher authority of the teacher.

The students are being introduced to the facts in question

The students are apathetic.

There are probably more reasons, but they escape me at this time.

I agree comletely with 'disciplinarianism.' People at my school get in trouble for having their 'midriff' show while stretching. It doesn't even have to be a belly button, just skin that appears after the pants and before the shirt.
Disregarding all new evidence everywhere.

Oh we're really trashy out here in New Mexico, kids get in trouble for dress code if you can see nipples, or pubic hair. Anything else goes. Kind of horrible actually.

i never disagreed with dress codes.. i honestly think it would be easier if schools just went to uniforms.. it would have made life so much easier in high school, yet everyone thinks it would be horrible.. dress codes have a purpose.. and when you really think about it.. showing skin in the "midriff" section is just trashy anyway... but going on.. i think that letter is just ridiculous, of course the kid seems to have gone about questioning the teacher in the wrong way too... i wouldn't scream out "dont believe her lies" or whatever it was... it would've been more appropriate to simply raise his hand and ask innocently.. "isnt a mile greater than a kilometer? seeing that the conversion is 1.6 kilometers to the mile?" or something along those lines... and he may have done that.. but who knows.. it is a little disturbing that the teacher also wrote "as i insisted that the distance of a kilometer is greater than that of a mile." ..... insisted being the keyword... anyways.. i wonder if that letter is real..

Never had to go through with the uniforms. The one policy I always hated was that you couldn't wear a hat. Like who gives a crap if I'm wearing a hat during class? I understand that "revealing clothing" can be distracting but what's so bad about a hat?

ever been tired in class?.. hehehe.. hats work out real nice for you.. :P .. hehehe.. in all seriousness though.. hats dont provide much of a distraction, so i do think there is some hidden desire for power or control on that issue.. but that is high school all together really... everyone there is still a kid whos immature and doesnt want to be there so they feel the best way to keep you there is to invoke fear and force you to pay attention and force you to feel bad for falling asleep and not allow to wear certain things they feel distract you or your fellow classmates.. now pretend you were allowed to fall asleep in any class.... how well rounded would everyone be?.. we'd all fall asleep in the classes we hate and stay awake in the ones we loved.. and have less knowledge in some of the foundations of each subject.. and then when or if you went to college you would be conditioned to fall asleep in classes you dislike, which turn out to be a good amount in college.. for awhile.. then you would learn even less when it counted more... and voila.. a country of 'tards! ahhh! chaos! /rant Edited by JediHunter
