If we are to follow the pattern shown in the ranks of this forum, then the ranks are in the "correct" order. Evidence lies in one of the X-Wing novels were a commander is promoted to captain by the mere reduction of a single code cylinder. Thus, if colonel were in line after commander, then commander should have more code cylinders than colonel. A general statement: for insignia with the same amount of squares (same pattern of such), more code cylinders is lower than less cylinders.
