Beginning a model, need help

Recommended Posts

Hi. Sorry if you've seen this before, but when I first tried to post this, it seemed to get lost. Anyway, I'm trying to make the Outlaw Star, which essentially is going to look like a red mon cal cruiser with arms. I'm using the Spline method in the tutorial, using gmax. The problem is that expanding the model in 3d makes it look very flat and boxy, wheras I'm looking for a smooth and rounded appearance. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hmm, I'm going to assume a bit, since I don't fully know what you meant with expanding.

a) you've tried to scale your model, to make it larger. Did you perhaps use the scale option (can be selected by clicking too long on that button), that only works for one direction (x/y/z) ?

b) if you haven't built the model's main body yet or are having trouble with that, I suggest the following. For the Mc40a I used a 12-sided, segmented sphere, that I converted to an editable mesh, later.

This requires some foresight, though. So, give it as many segments, as you think it needs and try a rough sculpting, then. This stage often shows, whether you need to start again with more segments or not.

Small addons, like bridge towers don't need to come off the segments, btw. They can be modelled separately and welded on the ship later with the "attach" modifier.

Could you perhaps post screenshots of your modelling and the blueprints you are using for the ship.

I am having slight problems understanding your problem. Don't forget that in rebellion its more the textures which play a role rather than the modelling.

Okay. I dont know how to take screenshots, so I uploaded the file. Its a Gmax file, btw.

This is the blueprint I was using, I tried to add some spikey things to the top and simplify the back end.

See how the base picture is rounded and mine is flat? I created this using Mask's "Spline tutorial", btw.

Well try selecting your mesh and selecting all the faces. Now at the bottom of the face options there should be something like Auto smooth. enter a value like 45 and click"AutoSmooth.

I don't know if this trick works in Gmax but i highly recommend you try and cut up your modela dn amke it in several pieces it always makes things easier and easy to rectifiy any mistakes.
