Of a good 3D modeling program, that is simple to use. I need a new hobby, and I think 3D modeling may be fun for someone like me.

Any good ones out there? Or are they all about the same?

Most of the good professional ones are expensive. You definitely get what you pay for though.

I'm sure Eville and Mask can help you out.

Well, there's GMax. Though that's 19.2 Mb.

If that's too large for you to down load, there's Wings 3d which is only around 2 Mb

Both are good programs - I use 3d Studio Max, and GMax is just a cut down version of it.

My brother uses Wings3d and he prefers it to 3d Studio Max for creating low poly game models (Note: Wings is still Beta). It has really good inbuilt UVW Mapper, that's also easy to use. You can select individual and group faces without detaching them and creating UVW coordinates that are rendered to a blank texture for you to draw on. It is also heavily built on shortcut keys.

BadSamaritan sat on the bridge of his massive vessel, and watched as the battle in cyberspace unfolded. The massive RIAA convoy, loaded down with new MP3s, music videos, and much much more, quickly became nothing mor then fodder under his vessels guns. The RIAA vessels tried to fight back by giving him decoys, but in the end, it was futile. He checked his displays, and smiled.

"Gunners, download all tracks and videos from the vessel bearing mark 378-35-869. And helm, set us a course for the Bittorrent nebula. After this raid, we have some rather large programs that we need to help distriburte to our pirate brethren." He said, and the crewers of his ship nodded their heads, and got to work following his orders.

BadSamaritan smiled as his orders were followed. He loved being a Pirate.

The best and most expensive programs out there would have to be: 3ds Max (the best in my eyes), Lightwave, Maya (one used in Matrix i believe).

On the free side there is: Gmax (very good, used it before passing to 3ds Max), Wings 3d (tried it but never gave it a deep look), Anim8or ( quite good and rather easy to use once you have read the tutorial and can make rather good biological shapes and it has a rendering engine)

There you go there are many out there. Up to you to try them and find the one you prefer.

I think Maya actually exists in a free version.
