ZOMG Double post!!!!1

Righto: I'm finally contributing something to this thread rather than just ogling. Here are my first 'creations' in 3Ds Max 9, made possible by FIRST Robotics, AutoDesk, and Mad's helpful skyping keeping me sane throughout the whole... erm, most of... some of the process.

My first creation:

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a169/DarthTofu/Imalittleteapot.jpg It's a teapot (Standard thing that's stored on the program) on top of a pillar that I made and turned into a single object through several deletions of faces and attachments.

My second creation: http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a169/DarthTofu/Toaster.jpg It's a rather crappy toaster that I made. Yes, I know that I managed to mess up the back end of it, but the cutting process is rather screwy involving vertexes that are connected. It's all rather inane (Not insane, inane) and screwy in my opinion- like having a really sharp knife to cut stuff with, but you have to grasp it using your elbow to cut.

*Wanders off grumbling about how, if AutoDesk already makes Inventor, they can't just use the same interface for making 3D objects in Max*

:P

Edit:www.personal.utulsa.edu/~austin-hines/beach.mov 8O That's entirely 3D. There are some ridiculously awesome 3D images on Facebook groups that people made... 8O

Just made a chamber box with extended primatives and cut out all of the other pieces... I kind of want to learn to texture stuff, now...

Edit: The Toaster is now rendered and given lighting effects. Props to Mad for giving me large amounts of help.

Mad: Okay, where are you now?

Me: Erm, it says something about the base code here...

Mad: What? Your in the base code? We were just in lighting effects! How the hell did you get there?

Me: I don't know!

Mad: Okay, hit back a bunch of times you fool.

Me: Well... You talk funny! So hah!

Mad: Yes, we've established that. English is a secondary language for me.

Me: ... Well you still talk funny.

Mad: *Sigh* Where are you now?

Me: Erm... it says something about would I like to take over Microsoft, now?

Mad: 8O The hell is wrong with you?!?

Nice conversation :)

I'm actually quiet impressed with that toaster Tofu 8O

A few things to try and fix the top. First, I'd suggest selecting the top region that's meant to be flat (select it via a face selection within the editable poly method) and then scroll down the modifier panel and look for something called "make planar" that should straighten them all out - however, it might not work perfectly so you'll need to do some manual fixing and probably apply the method again.

Also, it could just be the normals that are buggered. Click on the modifier stack, scroll down to one called "smooth" - NOT MESH SMOOTH or TURBOSMOOTH. Just smooth. This will allow you to reset the normals for the lighting and give a quick fiddle around with stuff (There's not much in the way of options there - just an on/off toggle and an angle thresh hold. Don't bother with the series of numbers at the bottom)

I wish I could, Def, I really do. Unfortunately I'm not yet good enough in the program. I've only had it for *Checks watch* all of four days now, I think. The toaster was do-able primarily because I was lucky enough to find the basic shape as one of the things the computer will make for you. I can try a ship or two, but currently the only one I have in existance is one based off of Mad's ship design tutorial, with a bit of a chevron cut out of the back end because it looks cool...

This is going to sound rather dumn, but I still want to know: Is there any way to find out what your measurements for an object in Max are/were? After I click off of the object my measurements for radii, lengths, widths, heights, etc. all dissapear, meaning that I have to either remember 'em or write 'em down... Is there any way to ensure that Max leaves the data on "Sphere one" out in the open for you and such :?:
