Looks to be a very nice space sim, http://www.starshatter.com

Mod thread here:

I hope to see lots of future progress there. Maybe even Eville would be interested... or other modders interested in Homeworld?

I'm gonna check out the demo although this just seems like a space combat sim with a few bells on.

Maybe one day they will release Independence War III, the only good space sim released this century.. *sigh*

Well, I got the demo, so far playing the training missions.. let me tell you my teammate is dumb as a rock, I tell him to attack, he doesn't attack, I tell him to go land and if he's in the atmosphere he crashes while trying to land.

The space part seems ok, so most of my gripes are with the atmosphere.. first of all, how come the ships fly so slow?? Even a modern F-22 can outfly these space fighters which barely go up to 600 m/s (F-22 goes at Mach 2.5), so you'd think a fighter with a fancy impulse engine would fair better.

Then there's the landing.. what-the-hell? Once you hit ALT-I, your plane starts automatically drifting directly towards the landing strip. I see the approach vector but I can't get my plane to go through it because I'm drifting!!! I try to land but it keeps pulling me to the side, and I blow up... argh.

Then there's the ship mode (controlling a capital ship) -- I try to change my heading a little bit and my ship starts spinning... what the hell? Commanding your fighters doesn't seem too intuitive either, I should have some kind of RTS mode where I click and they go (i.e. homeworld).

The tutorial is sooo helpful! Doesn't even tell you how to fix these problems.

Graphics aren't that great either, pick up Independence War II instead, the GFX are better, the gameplay doesn't have these bugs, and it's in the bargain bin.

===================

edit: I finally made a successful atmospheric landing, and wouldn't you know it, the game crashes on me the next moment, dropping me to the desktop without so much as an error message!!!
