Star Wars: Battlefront

Well, I'm not sure if it's just ATI, or the Radeon cards in general, but there are a lot of people hacing VPU Recovery problems. If you can, get it from another company than ATI and I doubt you'll have problems.

I have a Ati Radeon 9800XT and there are no problems? I don't know what you mean? :?

There are two reasons why you may not be having any problems. First is that difficulties only arise when you force programs to use settings that you define. For example, setting your card so that, no matter what, it will use AGP 8x and AA 6x may cause a VPU Recovery error. Also, from what I have gathered, the errors only seem to occur with certain games, which change depending on what card you are using. I found that I only had problems with my card while playing Lineage II, but I was using the Catalyst Controle Centre to force overclock settings. After I set my card to allow programs to choose the best settings, the problem dissapeared.

If it performs at the same level as an ATI Radeon 9800, yes, it's a very good choice. I'm not sure of how good MSI cards are. I hear good things though.

My Radeon 9800 Pro cost me $249, though that was through Future Shop, who has a deal with ATI. It also came with a $50 mail-in rebate. If I were to buy it from ATI it would have cost me $349.

That's got to be with specific games only, I only had this problem while playing Rise of Nations for an extended amount of time. Even then, the VPU is successfully reset and you can go back to playing the game :-).

No such problems with: BF series, UT2004, Doom 3, Rome: Total War, Half-Life GoldSrc (the first HL), CS Source, or Tribes Vengeance. I might've missed a few games I played recently, but I doubt the VPU thing is going to happen with a game like Battlefront :). If it does it would probably get fixed by ATI right away.

That's probably true. As yet I have to experience the problem again, though I'm going to try and play around with the settins again and see if it happens. I'm sick of not getting the most out of my card.

Yes, I did.. Anyways I should have Battlefront by Tuesday and I'll put up a dedicated server (what do you think the name should be guys?) as soon as they release a Linux binary.

Either name the server after SWR (good publicity, and you may even have call for a Battlefront section to be added), or [sPAM] Clan Public Server, or some such.

Ahhh, ok, but that name is so long it might not fit into most player's browsers.. :). I was gonna go buy the game today, but turns out those bastards are pretending not to have the game.

I hate them, I really do.. I know they have the game in their warehouse in the store, but they just aren't putting it out on the shelf until the "release date."

and funny thing is, ebgames.com says shipping 9/20 (today), and when I called my local ebgames store they said the release date is 9/21.. boy, those guys don't know what they're talking about! geez...

Anyways, hope the Linux binary is out soon! When are YOU guys getting the game?

Well, your EB games guys are really being asses. Mine got the game today (just got the call, booh-yeah!), and they aren't holding it back until tomorow, so I can play it tonight, though I'll be restricted to single-play since no one else will have it to put up a server.

I'll post some screens if I have time, what with me being too buisy playing and all.

Sooo...? How is it, I heard the flying really sucked and the maps were tiny like Halo? Is this true?

Well, I will say this. The maps are HUGE! They're bigger than any maps you'll find in Halo, or even Battlefield Vietnam for that matter. I've spent my time learning the ins and outs of Endor and Hoth, and I'm quite impressed.

As for the piloting, I haven't been able to find a TIE figher, so I can't really comment on that. The speeder bikes on Endor will take some getting used to since there are a lot of trees and bushes.

My only qualms with the game are A) some of the sounds aren't what they were in the movies, but I can live with that. B) The cannon shots from the AT-ST are quite slow, more like rockets. It's damn near impossible to hit a snowspeeder.

There are two AT-ATs on Hoth, so lots of fun there. And perhaps the most satisfying thing is throwing a Thermal Detonator in the middle of a group of Ewoks. Those little furballs fly!

I've only got one screen shot since you have to pase them in a paint program (the game doesn't save them automatically like Homeword). So, here is the result of my flying a speederbike on Endor. That tree I'm lying next to is what got me.

If I post any more, they'll be links for those of you without high-speed :D
