Didn't Napoleon actually crown himself finstead of letting the pope crown him, although he did bring him to Notre-Dame?

As to which Emperor/King/Ruler the greatest was depends on the criteria you use to define it.

There was Ramses, Alexander, Nabucodonosor, Caesar, Konstantin, Charles Magne, Barbarossa, Genghis Khan, Salah-Al-Din, Napeoleon, HEnry, Erik the REd, moctezuma, Atahualpa. All these could be considered great, all depends from your point of view. all that were considered great were considered tyrants by others. FRenchmen hail Anpoleon as a national Leader, Code NApoleon etc, Germans don't like him that much

Although in the last century the governors have a greater tendence to tyranism than to greatness, (well from my poitn of view, that is)

for example: Stalin, hitler, Mussolini, France, Churchill, the japanese one from 1945, some American presidents ( Ilive in Latinamerica, after all), Pinochet, Fidel, the argentinian ones, Hugo Chavez....

Obviously Palpatine. Seriously though, the greatest ruler of all time? That's too easy for me!!! You might think me odd, but for me it has to be God.

Right, but like in that one famous book-trilogy, ("the answer is 42") I dunno the english name, we can take God out of this equation :)

I'd say Muad'dib, or Leto II. No wait, that's still going to happen in about 8,000 years. Guess we'll have to run that poll a little longer, eh ?

"Caesar" is a title, not a specific person. They were all called Caesar; I assume you mean Julious?
If I am wise, it is because I know that I know nothing.

Sure, but Julius is the one that most people think of, when they hear that title. Almost nobody I ever heard said Caesar Nero, for example. So this is just a common error :D

Ah thanks, so it's "The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy". I didn't know the original name, cause I never actually read it, someone from my semester just told me pratically the whole story.

You guys forgot Peter the Great... shame on you.

I don't think there's one important person per sé, but maybe if you ask which was the most important person of a single country.. it would be much easier to differentiate.

Most likely Napoleon for France.. but what you US guys seem to always forget is that General Kutozov (of Russia) beat him... All the way back to France... hehe... I guess americans just overlook it because Napoleon was an ally of the US and all... or maybe because the average american is a joe schmuck.

Nah, sorry, i'm gonna stick with God, i mean, do you know of anybody else, (that you actually believe exists(ed)) that created a universe? Or hasd the power to give people eternal life in heaven, or suffering in hell?

Great ideas, all! Thanks for participating!

Elvis...I would have to agree with ya...but I was referring to mortals. Still, I like your convictions!

Igor...I've got a great graph of Napoleon's invasion of Russia and the losses he sustained in the retreat. It's unbelievable!

I'm American, but I would have to say Alexander the Great would be my choice. Look at the Empire he built! Kinda like the Old Republic! :D

Tahnk you Untimey, Alexander the Great was pretty, err, great, but there are so many leaders that have affected our world in so many different ways that it's hard to say......

Taking into account Saddam Hussein's plight, however, I wouldn't put my money on dictators either...
