how did 250,000 star destroyers get reduced to 250 in some 20 odd years?

if the New Republic had the manpower, it would have Easily won the Yuzzanh Vong wars. in the "Unifying Force", the size of the armada was described to be "on the number of 5,000" and was replied "then we havent got a chance"

if the Empire still had 250,000 star destroyers, it would kick the*ss of all the YV to another Universe.

hmmm, your number looks a little high, 25,000? :? ?

I think it was less than that, maybe one too many zeros - anyway the way that a large number (what ever the number was) got reduced due to the power vacuum left after the death of the Emporer - Admiral, Generals and Moffs alike all wanted to be the new Emporer. As such, they gathered what ever forces they could muster and attempted to install themselves as the new Emporer or equivalent. The outcome was a sort of civil war between these warlords resulting in huge loss of Imperial life and material. However, not everyone was foolish enough to be brought into the battle - characters like Thrawn, Pellaeon and of course Dalla. Infact, Dalla tried to bring the Empire together on several occasions (I'm not sure if she ever suceeded, or if it was Pellaeon who ended up uniting the Remnant Empire).

As for the New Republic, they never had large fleets made of enormous vessels - rather the oppisite. They originally constructed their fleets around carriers with smaller vessels acting as mainly escort while fighters and bombers attacked the enemy - this later evolved into a mix between carriers with escorts and large combat ships. By the time the Vong attacked the New Republic had around 5 fleets (each containing approximately 500 vessels - not including fighters) as well as smaller independant task forces. Due to the truce with the Remnant several years earlier, the New Republic had even began to down size their already small fleets, after all it is a really big galaxy, and new warship designs were rare as they weren't needed - hence small numbers of Bothan Assault cruisers and Star Defenderes, not to mension the larger combat ships such as Defender class Star Destroyers were only produced in small numbers. The Defender in particular, when released 10 of these vessels were constructed with only an additional 1 planned per year!

Never the less the New Republic's fleets were amply suited for combat against the Vong, as they both preferred tactics to brute force (well, the New Republic at least - the Vong sometimes liked chucking a massive fleet at the enemy  ). What almost doomed the New Republic was its goverment - the ineptness of the senate resulted in senators wanting to make peace with the Vong, senators (mainly from the advisory council) trying to position themselves better for more power and finally betraying the New Republic for their own gain - Viqi Shesh to name a few.

You see, against the vong, the empire would have won. Why?

Firepower, plain and simple. The empire would have thrown massive fleets agianst the Vong, and a superweapon or two, and wiped them out.

I once knew a great man. Nothing got to him, and he always smiled. May he forever rest in peace, knowing fully well that his freinds shall remember him.

I don't know - if the Rebel Alliance was capable of almost wiping out the Empire due to exploiting their flaws, the Vong surelly would have (just look at what Nom Anor accomplished by himself!). Then again, half the reason the Vong were around so long is because of the New Republic's lack of responce to the threat, in this area the Empire was definitely better - at least they can see a threat!

Also, as the Remnant found out the Vong aren't push overs - they got pounded too :? Damn Vong - ah, no offence Trejiuvanat

Okay this debate really amounts to fleets and how ships are spread out in the star wars universe.

250,000 Imperial Star Destroyers means 250,000 Star Destroyers spread out out over hundreds of sectors and thousands upon thousands of systems. I've read some statistics that point out that only around 5% of the imperial fleet was actively engaged in anti-rebel operations. This means that only five percent of that fleet were involved in Combat Operations. That leaves 50,000 Imperial Star Destroyers to pursue rebel ships in probably five hundred or more sector fleets. The rest of those ships would be handling anything from customs to piracy, to basic mapping missions and even passenger transport.

Many of the Star Destroyer Captains that were loyal to the Empire until the fall of Coruscant had no interest in fighting the rebellion and defected. They thought of themselves as peacekeepers not conquers. So when Coruscant changed hands around 150,000 Star Destroyer Captains had to make a choice between the empire, a warlord, or the rebellion. There is how allot of the Combat Power fo the Empire was destroyed.

With the unifying force...5,000 ships amassed at one point for one strike is an enormous amount of combat power. But you have to realize there had to be thousands upon thousands of other ships scattered throughout vong space to actually maintain control of that space. There probably were perhaps as many as over a million ships in the total Vong Invasion Force.

The scope of a Galactic conquest is still very hard to imagine. 8)

I think the number was 25,000. 250,000 is way too much. In reality it's all the good guys must win syndrome. No matter how many Warlords there is NO WAY that 25,000 star destroyers could be destroyed.

The Imperials doubtlessly would have wiped out the YV.

I seem to recall an X-Wing comic book where Wedge and the glory-without-a-scratch-boys capture a miniture Death Star Superlaser weapon... which must have had some drastic effect effect on those carrot-Vong worldships....

Perhaps they forgot where they archived it...
