What's great about the Star wars Universe?

In the other thread I suggested maybe departing from the Star Wars copyright and creating a new universe would be the best chance we'd have at seriously developing a sequal.

I am rather inspired at the idea of creating such a universe and it has me seriously thinking about writing a story for it. I'd make the story a little more bloody and dark then Star Wars and try to combine the best parts of sci-fi unversa that I have come into contact with. If and when I write my bestselling masterpiece 8) , I will want to encorporate the best elements of SW in it, offcourse..

So, what are the best elements of the Star Wars universe do you think? Is it 'The Force', the concept of a civil war, the fairytale idea, the costumes, or the characters? :?:

I'd love to hear your ideas

Leia and Padme, of course...

Actually I think it's abit of everything, but especially the Myth factor, unlike ST, for instance, Star Wars does have a "history", it's laden with like the Force, like the Jedi and the Sith, it's a huge epos with heroes and battles set in one moment or another everyone has wanted to be. The diversity of the characters and their motifs adds make the SW Universe pretty cool as well.

You know what's great about Star Wars, when it came out in 1977 people needed a movie to believe in,and it came out. People flocked to the theatres to see it,and it became a cult hit. that's what I think. :)
The force is strong in my family. No, Luke, I am your father.

(Laughing hysterically)-ahem- This topic is really interesting considering, I have the goal in life of replacing Star Wars with a creation of my own, but what makes Star Wars well Star Wars?

1. Stealing what works from everybody else.

2. Mythical Backstory and a father son generational myth.

3. Technology and Special Effects for the wow factor.

4. Starting in the middle of the Story----Episode 4?

5. Cool starting crawls...

6. Solid Characters (Were the prequals screwed up)

So to confound all those who are around I'll show you how an introductory crawl for my own creation (STELLAR MAGIC) would go.

Long before man reached for the heavens in a jet of fire, a dark time was hidden. From it, all the horrors of the world paled in comparison as the beasts from beyond came to earth, and from these beasts the great legends of earth were born. The beasts were invaders from another world. In this dark time humanity seemed doomed to be enslaved by the tyrannical beasts. But the wizards, powerful men that sprang up in their wake, defeated the invaders. Eventually, fearful of their great power the kings of the world hunted down and exterminated the last witches and wizards of earth. The keys to their power lay forgotten, as was the great invaders except for in myth and legend.

Then in the twenty first century of our lord the invaders came again, but they were not prepared. Humanity had mastered the atom and managed to drive them back with their technology. During this time a wizard’s tomb was uncovered in southern England. He had been buried with a set of spell books along with a wand and staff. After years of experimentation their purpose became clear and magic was reborn. For the next two millennia the Brotherhood of Wizards would fight for humanity. This is where our story begins…

Lets see... Myth check. Good vs Evil, check. Technology, check. Superhuman/alien abilities, check. Stealing what works, check.

Watch out Lucas here I come. (Ego growth, watch out.)

Bullcrap... Hmm...

Are you describing the Prequeals?

EDIT: Star Wars is really a bunch of scenes from other movies spliced together with the force and alot of technological wows. He just stole what works like the rest of hollywood.
