Their technology didn't seem to propogate through the republic, they didn't have a large populace, they weren't a large manufacturer of goods, etc. The only thing that made it significant was Palpatine and the fact that Luke's mother was once queen there. The fact, that this game is set just before ROTJ should prove (as much as it is possible in the EU), that the planet is still there. It isn't described that much in the game, except for mentioning 'a big battle' between the native Gungans and the Trade Federation. So I guess Elvis' prediction of the backwater planet is accurate.
