I think we should invite the Star Wars fans in the University of Michigan Medical School around here.

Yoda and Princess Leia... Next we'll see Chewbacca the lab monkey showing some natural skills for piloting spacecraft.

Yoda's cage mate, Princess Leia, is a much larger female who uses her body warmth to keep the dwarf mouse from freezing to death.

As appropriate as the description may be, I nearly spewed my morning coffee across my monitor when I read this. Great find, Evanders!

Not bad! :) Reminds me of a hamster I had as a kid called 'Luke' (naturally enough!) I would get home from school and race into the kitchen to find him dangling from the roof of his cage, BY ONE PAW!!! I figure if it hadn't been for his cage his would have been a larger destiny...

Well it's good to hear Yoda is still doing his bit for the mouse population, sort of redefines 'using the force.'

I was really into the science fair in middle school and the first year of high school. I did an experiment "Happy Hamster Habitats" where I observed which habitats the hamsters preferred to live in. I had three hampsters, Arnold, Jean Claude, and Kevin (Costner). Well Kevin died of wet tail, Arnold musceled his way out of the cage and was found in a shoe, and Jean Claude was a fast little sucker, he escaped and every so often, as my family was sitting around watching tv, we would see a gray streak race across the room. Everyone would jump up and go chase after him trying to catch him  Never did

Yeah, that's about right! Most of my Hampsters escaped at one point or another, living for a week or two in the floorboards, to be occasionally seen here and there, discoloured by dirt and dust; but in my case lured back into captivity by the cunning deployment of cheese...

I trust young Arnold was dead when found in a shoe, and not dead because he was in a shoe... :(

Actually Arnold escaped a few times and like the shoes, he met his untimely end because I dropped the lid of the cage (it was a specially designed box wiht a plexiglass top for easy veiwing) on his head and broke his neck :( It was very sad. Then when my turtle commited sucicide, at least when I found him his body was above water and his head under, it really looked like he drowned himself, I decided I was sticking to larger animals. I'm great with dogs and cats.

:? I guess he must have had personal problems he just couldn't talk to you about... :(

 and to think if we had just got him into one of those pet therapists

Poor turtle, he was a really cute little guy :(

I've had budgies since I was 6.

My current one, Tweety, is so far the longest living (over ten years) and also the only success in having them breed in a cage.

I've always wanted a hampster though, so I just ask you experts: is it true, that they only get active during the night ? Would be cool to watch the little guys during the semester break, but pretty disturbing during the semester, where I have to get up early. :?

I'm sorry that sounds painful  Seriously though, what's a budgie? :? I don't think I have ever heard that term. Can you describe them for me?

Hampsters are mostly nocturnal, though they do play some during the day. You tend to get used to the scritch-scritch noise they make after a bit. TF always talks about one that his elementary school teacher had. They would put in a hampster ball and let roll around the classroom while they were working. So you can get them to play some during the day. Mine slept a lot and ate a lot.

I had a rat named Oscar that was pretty playful, but once agian that was mostly at night.

We should start a thread, what names have you given your pets?

I have a white german Shepard named Gretchen and a mutt named Griffin (well when we found him at the vet clinic, I originally named him Stud Muffin, but after the vet we worked for neutered him, TF changed his name to Griffin), I also have a cat named Tyler. TF wanted me to add our other cat Wicket. He has gone on to the big cat house in the sky 8O don't know if that came out right  Wicket looked like a big Ewok and thus that is where he got his name from. He was the cuddliest cat very very affectionate. He met his demise int he jaws of a stray dog that wondered into our front yard. TF thinks he was trying to save Tyler from the dog. He was an awesome cat.

Thanks, I'm getting better after these pills ...

Seriously, budgies are ... 8O ... ZOOT :!: bad cat, let him go, don't make me get the lightsaber :!: ahh, that's better. As I was saying budgies are usually wild-living australian birds ( ) and there are about as much of them in Australia as there are sparrows living in Germany. From the noise mine makes I can't even imagine, what a whole tree-full would sound like.

According to that second link, Tweety is a "Dominant Pied Light Green" one, although his chest feathers have a much brighter color, thanks to this airbrush set I once ... uh, I mean, it's all natural, honest

Next time, on Extreme Pet Make-overs, we examine how best to bring out the natural highlights in your pets' coloration using an airbrush and common household products...

Thinks for clearing that up, I was really worried about you for a minute  They are pretty. I have never heard of them before. I have always wanted a bird. My parents wouldn't let us get them growing up because my sister accidentally smothered hers to death. Mom said hold on tight so she did 8O A freind keeps trying to give me his birds, one is demonic  but the other is very sweet, TF said absolutely not, 2 kids, 2 dogs and 1 cat is enough. :( he ruins all my fun.

you know, I think I begin to see a pattern there

They get to be about ... calculator ... divided by 2.5... 7,5 inches long (including their tail feathers), can live up to 15 years and with very much time, effort and luck can even be taught to speak a little. So far I either didn't have the luck or the time. I remember even recording a sentence once and playing it on an hour-long tape for one of them, but he would just climb around in the cage, like it was none of his business :(

What kind of birds does your friend want to give to you ? Parrots ?

Oh I wish if it was parrots I don't think TF would have a say so

Nope they are little birds, hmmm.. :? Finches, parakeets :?: I really don't know my birds very well.

You could either try the images button on google.com or start with what color they have

I just looked at the terms you wrote and under parakeets I found mostly pictures of budgies, so I think parakeets is the term used for their species. Finches get about half as big as parakeets, but can easily be twice as loud.

Btw, in German "finches" would be "Finken" and "parakeets" "Sittiche", that somehow explains that I couldn't make anything of the second
