igorimp
I've been surfing the net in search of an 11-year old game which I'm sure a lot of people will remember: Day of the Tentacle. Some nostalgia made me look for it for download in the abandonware community (after some years, most companies release their games for free public availability so they can be downloaded for free - check out http://www.abandongames.com). What I found out really disturbed me. After so many years, Day of the Tentacle is still firmly locked out. And it's not just that game, LucasArts keeps almost everything they have locked up: most adventure games (Indiana Jones, The Dig, Sam & Max...), the Star Wars titles (yes, even the early '90s X-wing which works only on DOS these days) and, basicly, everything they've made... Couple that with their distrust towards releasing Rebellion's source code and... there you have it! But there is another mention here. The quality of their games have really sunk low. Such classic and original titles as Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, Day of the Tentacle, TIE fighter, Monkey Island... have been replaced by First person shootouts... I have nothing against them, in fact, I love playing Jedi Academy, I just think they did much better games when they were doing original ideas, not just refining trends. If nothing, then Knights of the Old Republic, prove this to be truth - decleared as 'a step in a good direction' by most, is it enough to make the company turn to 'the light side'? I, for one, really think they need new menagement. Btw, LucasArts started to make Sam & Max 2, but they cancelled the project. A bunch of enraged fans started to sign a petition against that decision. Check out http://www.savesamandmax.com for more details! Jahled
Good post with some good points. I think one problem Lucasarts have is their link to the Star Wars franchise; which has a collective ego larger than the bubble in which it floats... and this seeps down to even non-SW titles. I can't comment on more recent releases because I have not been fortunate enough to play them, but I do agree with you in that Lucasarts do seem to view themselves and their projects as if on-par with Microsoft in their sense of self-importance. In another respect I think they are just plain mean especially with their older titles. http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif
Texas_Fett
Personally, I haven't bought another Lucasarts game since 'Rebellion', mainly because I haven't been overly impressed with what I've seen. Well, that and the fact that I suck at FPS games. I guess 'Dark Forces: Jedi Knight' counts, but I bought that one from a friend after JK2 came out. Although, I am sorely tempted to purchase 'Galdius'...that game made quite an impression when I rented it for the PS2. It amazes me that Lucasarts hasn't revisited the 'Rebellion' concept. After all, the bad reviews it got centered around the interface, not the concept. With some fine tuning and perhaps the addition of a simplified groud-battle engine (and, of course, the incorporation of each and every 'improvement' we've come up with here ) they could find themselves with a real winner. Guest Scathane
I don't think LucasArts is an arrogant company, although they are indeed big. Their brand equity is so big partly because of them not releasing any branded material for free... Why should software companies give away their software for free after a few years anyway? (I tend to agree with TK on the urban legend) I could just as easily argue for Kenner to start giving away old Star Wars toys...
ElvisMiggell
I think LucasArts are in danger of losing 'it'. They have to start listening to the fans. Pretty much every other company does to a much greater extent. It's the one part of the bandwagon that LA really NEED to jump on. Elvismiggell. LetTheWookieWin
No they have not lost it. If you have not played Gladius it a very good game. A little refining would have made is an unbelievable game, but all in all it is very fun. Now if they would only do another Rebellion styled game, but I doubt they will, the Lucus Arts attempts at strategy games have been pretty well blasted by critics. Chewbacca: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrgh C-3PO: He made a fair move. Screaming about it can't help you. Han Solo: Let him have it. It's not wise to upset a Wookiee. C-3PO: But sir, nobody worries about upsetting a droid. Han Solo: That's 'cause droids don't pull people's arms out of their sockets when they lose. Wookiees are known to do that. Chewbacca: Grrf. C-3PO: I see your point, sir. I suggest a new strategy, R2: let the Wookiee win.

Texas_Fett
Gladius is a very underrated game. I rented it for the PS2 and both BBL and I enjoyed playing it. The 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' aspect of combat is intriguing, as is the magic aspect. The strategy needed to win, along with the 'training' of the gladiators in your stable makes this an incredibly addictive game. There's a slight learning curve, but it's well worth checking out. In fact, it's going to become part of my library of Gamecube games in the near future. Guest Scathane
I wouldn't know, since I've never played it. It always seemed to, though, that Gladius is a very nice game!
Bill
Keep them around a little longer, KOTOR was an excellent game, see what they come up with next before I condemn them. The force is strong in my family. No, Luke, I am your father.

ElvisMiggell
Previews of KOTOR II look like... an expansion to KOTOR. Just the same as JKIII was to JKII. Elvismiggell.
