Yeah, I heard it on the radio, when I got up (6 AM). That was just the moment, when it got the 11th Oscar. :D

I also heard what Tim Robbins and Bill Murray said, as well as a bit of what Jim Carrey was trying to say

From the news I also got, that Peter Jackson wants to make a movie about King Kong next ... 8O

Well, i'm in the strange and unexpected state of actually agreeing with this strange body of people who dish out the awards... Peter Jackson's efforts were majestic and at points simply breath-taking. I was extremely woried about how the books would translate onto the silver screen, and well; our man exceeded all expectation.

It's ok to leave out Tom Bombastic or whatever he's called, and minor details like Glorfindel being replaced by Arwen at the fords of Bruin, because the overall attention to the monument that is Tolkein's work simply resonated with love in it's cinematic production. The casting was increadible. Ian, as Gandalf, put in one of the acting performances of film history; given the genre, absolutely spell-binding.

Moments in the trilogy will remain with me always for sheer adrenaline... the appearance of the Balrog in Khazad-Dum, not least; 'Behold the white rider' at Helmsdeep.

For someone who has read all the histories of Middle-Earth, and spent great tracts of his life more immersed in Tolkein's worlds than even Star Wars, I am content to voice my approval for the simbolic pat on the back that is the Oscars.

I wonder if he's thought about turning his talents to the second greatest book ever-writtian, The Silmarillian...

Who on earth could be caste as Feanor...

I'm usually not a fan of such event (Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, Golden Globes, what not..). I've never watched one, I don't think I'll start anytime soon.

On the other hand I'm glad for the recognition that Jackson's movies deserve, the excellent acting of Ian McKellen, the hard work invested in translated the books on screen without losing anything of the story. I like them very much, I disagree with some small minor changes, but I understand why there were made, so I will not complain about them. I even recent that Gollum couldn't be put up as candidate for best supporting actor.

To convert the Silmarillion into a movie will be harder than it was with the books. It'd be like turning the Old Testament of the Bible into a movie, because that what the Silmarillion is. It's a story that starts with the genesis of Middle-Earth and stretched for thousands of years and many generations, from Fëanor to Eärendil and they have to tell the stories of Turin, and the Fall of Gondolin and Nargothrond.

PJ would be aiming to high, the Silmarillion alone has enough material for another three-hour-movie-trilogy. But seeing hosts of Balrogs, Dragons and Elves in their full esplendor is really a nice prospect.

I can see that PJ would rather do the Hobbit....

Yes, Mask he is doing a King Kong movie... How that will turn out, I don't know...

But who will play the obligatory 'white woman' ?

If it's Jennifer Aniston, then I might even watch it :lol:

What are your thoughts on this wonderfull night!!??

It's about damn time!

I was very happy that RotK won Best Picture and PJ won Best Director. Then again, I was just happy that Mystic River didn't. Could've done without the Best Actor award going to Sean Penn, though, as well as the Best Supporting Actor award going to Tim Robbins. Those two are the biggest celebrity idiots this country has ever had the misfortune of producing, IMHO.

But I digress.

I'm one of those who feels that the awards this year were more a reflection on the accomplishments of the whole trilogy, and not Return of the King alone. Don't get me wrong; I loved the movie. I've read the books every other year since I was twelve. I just think that you really can't give out awards to the individual movies in the Trilogy, since they're all parts of one story. But justice was served, and the fantasy/sci-fi community has been vindicated.

Yeah, unfortunately they'd have to get someone else to play Bilbo though. :(

Why's that? Did the original actor die? :?

Dunno, don't think so.

But I think he's just too old to play a youthful 2 year old (? haven't read the books yet) Hobbit

Actually, Bilbo was 50 years old when the events of 'The Hobbit' took place, the same age Frodo was when he left for the events of 'The Lord of the Rings'. Of course, that's in 'Hobbit Years', and since hobbits aren't considered adults until they hit 33...

Theonering.net posted a rumor several months ago that both Sir Ian Holm (Bilbo) and Sir Ian McKellan (Gandalf) would definitely sign on to do 'The Hobbit' if it were ever put into production. And yes, they're both still alive.

Peter Jackson has said that he'd do 'The Hobbit' after his current project, 'King Kong'.

Here's a bit of trivia: in the 'Lord of the Rings' dramatized BBC radio broadcast, Sir Ian Holm plays Frodo. It threw me off when I first heard his voice in the movies as Bilbo. :D

I keep forgotting you guys not in the UK don't get a radio station here in the UK, Radio Four. That broadcast you refer to was the product of that station; and is about the best radio adaption of anything I have ever heard other than perhaps the HGttG...

Apart from Ian Holm being Frodo, if you listen to this audio adaption you'll realize where Mr Jackson got a great deal of his ideas from in the larger sense; but that's not disrespecting his genius for the movies...

Aye, HGttG is a blast, but I think I'm missing the end. The end had something to with a Lintilla, her uncounted clones and me realizing, that if I wouldn't have been up to 06:00AM I wouldn't have fallen asleep in my chair and might've even heard how it ended...

Does this Radio 4 station maybe offer a internet radio service ? 8)

Yeah, I got the 13 CD set for Christmas a couple of years back. Great stuff! I think, too, that the actor that does Boromir was the same one who played him in the Ralph Bakshi movie. At least, the voice sounds the same.

I'm not quite sure I follow. Sure, they had to 'trim' a little bit of dialogue (and Tom Bombadil/Old Man Willow), but otherwise they tended to follow teh book much more closely (Faramir, Eomer, Ent's assault on Isengard {or lack thereof}, etc.).

What I found most funny is that I'd never realized how little Legolas and Gimli are in things after the Battle of Helm's Deep. This radio adaptation filled in the blanks by having their dialogue follow Aragorn's, usually with something like:

Aragorn: "I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn, Elessar the Elfstone, etc., etc."

Legolas: "And I'm Legolas the Elf!"

Gimli: "And Gimli the Dwarf!"

Legolas & Gimli: "With bow and axe we come!"

The sad thing is, after seeing the movies the voices for this set just don't sound right anymore. :?:(

Yep! It's mainly the 'voice of the educated middle-class,' in the UK, I have it on my alarm clock in the morning to get me out of bed (there's nothing quite like a good dose of politicians ranting and raving first thing to get you heading towards the shower...) but it has some really interesting stuff. You can actually buy the radio adaption of LotR from the BBC shop...
