Thats a good start. Recently some very good mods have been released. If you want quality over quantity take a look at Avengers ISD vs VSD mod and check out some of bailknights mod. However if you want lots of units take a look at SpaceAddons adds MANY new space units to play. If you want a mixture of both take a look at  z3r0x's mod. Its very nice. Adds different factions and lots of units. Hailfire droids, AATs, MTTs etc.

Look for tutorials, start with simple XMLing. I recomend unlocking stuff and reusing models in new ways. When you get good, you can add totally new stuff. Or, if you want to skip to the new stuff, here's a pretty basic tutorial on reskinning:http://pff.swrebellion.com/index.php?topic=3812.0

 

You should wait until you're ok with XMLs. I recommend XML notepad instead of regular notepad:

That may be a different version then what I use, but if anything, it'll be better(hopefully)

I was a noob in XML coding, my first modification was in a small, crappy ship, the Tartan Patro Cruiser... But I liked my modification and still use it, and know I'm... less noob in XML coding! 

I use the Notepad to edit the files, but I'm going to try this new one...

 

BTW, skinning is hard!  ;D

Whats your schools internet blocker? I know several sites that let you use a proxy to get around those annoying school blockers.
