Was skeptical about the game - but love it now!
dougsmithuk posted a topic in EAW General Discussion
When I first played the game, tbh, I didnt enjoy it. Having bought it mainly to play MP (as did 4 of my mates!) it proved annoying in aspects as outlined below. Now, however, after fixing most of the bad points myself, we absolutely love it!! True, its not as strategically advanced as Rome Total War (which I loved too) but if you take it for what it is its just fun! I love playing the galactic conquest mode!! Heres the story so far: 1. Hated pirates in the MP conquest map - So I modded them out! 2. Movement speed was too fast in conquest map - So I modded it out too! 3. Didnt like the fact that the empire died with the emperor/death star - So modded it out! 4. Ship power balances, etc seemed wrong - So I modded them as well! What I'm trying to say is that everything annoying I found about the game was easily modded using the XML files The only thing I cant find out how to do (which i really really hope they add in) is persistent damage. Lets face it - after a huge space battle, the survivor has practically won the campaign game as he can then move onto each planet and claim the space around each With persistent damage, after a huge battle, the player would have to hold back to repair giving the losing a player a chance to build a new fleet. That said, however, the 3 hours spent the other night against my best mate is still talked about now as we had some awsome battles during that time!! Until I got cocky and tried to take his main planet with the death star and pesky luke with his stupid hair cut killed me As to other people moaning about MP connection issues, 4 of us play nightly with no problems whatsoever after doing the firewall trick. I find it hard to believe the game is to fault for MP connection issues as we have vastly varying systems and it all works perfectly fine!! P.S . I dont work for Petroglyph, but if they want to slip me a fiver then feel free -

Cool changes. Havent used the mod, but I've seen the CPU retreat a few times when I've been playing them ??? -
MP Campaign map with no pirates and more planets??
dougsmithuk replied to dougsmithuk's topic in EAW Mods General Workshop
Figured it all out (thanks for no help!). Now I have the following in MP: 1. 42 Player Multiplayer Map in conquest 2. No pirates 3. Have slowed down ship movement speed between planets making hyperspace travel slower 4. Imperial Infantry now move out of the way of tanks instead of being crushed Cant find a way to make damage persistant so assuming this isnt possible -
MP Campaign map with no pirates and more planets??
dougsmithuk replied to dougsmithuk's topic in EAW Mods General Workshop
Basically, I just want to know how to create a Multiplayer map that will appear under the custom menu and that I can pass to my friends. I've extracted the .xml files and found the file called "Campaigns_multiplayer.xml". I've opened it and it lists "Pirate starting forces". I have deleted these, but am stuck on what to do with the xml files to make them appear as a "Custom Map" within the multiplayer game menu. What do I do next? If this isnt the way to do it, could someone point out to me how to make new multiplayer maps please -
Had a thought the other day and tried it out before I gave up. I cant see why it wouldnt work, so maybe others could figure it out (unless its disabled somehow in the game!!) if I tell you what I did: I set-up a VPN server on my LAN at home and my friend connected to my network from his house fine. He was assigned a local IP address and I could ping and browse files on his machine!! We then though of simply opening Empire at War and trying the LAN option as theoretically he is on the same network now.... BUT we couldnt see each other in the LAN lobby Anyone else experimented with VPNs to try and get a LAN game working? Or is this not possible? I would LOVE it if this worked as I've only ever managed to get a few games working through the Gamespy method. This would mean my friends and I could play a LAN game, but without any of them having to bring their machines round Over to you guys....

Dont get me wrong. When the game works in multiplayer it is great fun. But getting it to work has frustrated me so much that I've given up. I have my firewall turned off and it works sometimes, but 80% of the time it just hangs when trying to connect. Was looking forward to the multiplayer campaign and playing my mate over the course of a few days with the ability to save. BUT they didnt include any huge campaign maps PLUS the pirates in the game are stupidly designed. Wouldnt mind if you could turn them off, but the options for setting up a game are very sparse. Main grip with multiplayer campaign is that you can scout out a planet and find its owned by a few pirate ships. You send a fleet to take it over, the game auto-resolves the battle and I've lost capital ships, etc against tiny corvettes!! If the option to disable pirates in multiplayer was present I'd love it...... Once I managed to connect to a game that is. I even came up with an idea of getting my friend to VPN onto a machine which is on my LAN (so he would appear to be on the same network) and using the LAN option instead of having to go through game spy. But he didnt appear in the game lobby so im assuming its disabled somehow When the game works its fun - but most of the time is spent having problems

I refuse to pay to beta test the game. The developers seriously made a mistake releasing the game in its current state. I'm not talking about single player as I only bought this game to play against friends (who have also returned it!!). We have so far successfully had 2 games online. The rest either crash out, wont connect successfully, give an exception error or will just sit in the multiplayer lobby doing nothing!! By releasing it early in this state, the magazines have slated the game giving it a bad name already so the damage has already been done. I'm sure they will iron out the patches in the next few months, but by then most players will have given up and moved on - plus sales have been lost by people not buying it based on the reviews. Let this be a lesson to petroglyph at future releases - DONT USE GAMESPY!!!! LET PEOPLE CONNECT DIRECTLY VIA IP. In a couple of months the game will be in the bargain bins in stores so I will come back and buy it then as thats the price it should be - £9.99. I will buy it sooner if they: 1. Allow us to connect via direct IP, bypassing the POS gamespy system 2. Allow us to turn off pirates in multiplayer campaign mode - currently the battles are autoresolved and you never even get a chance to choose if you fight the battle or not, hence you end up losing all your units!! It doesnt even tell you what units you faced or what units you lost AFTER the battle either!! How can you send a second fleet to the planet to counter-attack if you dont know what units are there?!! 3. Turn on persistent damage to stop people from steam rolling over all the planets. I know you can do it as I have done it already in the ONE time I managed to get the campaign game to work.

WTF? Whats the point in being able to split your forces into two attack groups with the instant repair feature? Half your force arrives and inflicts heavy damage on the enemy but gets wiped out.... Then your next force arrives to face the SAME enamy again yet theyre all at full strength again!!! Seems pointless being able to send two fleets to attack at different times unless damage is carried over. I would much rather be able to choose which ships to send into battle at the beginning and the others sit outside as reinforcements. Makes much more sense and will stop the computer choosing random units to place on the battefield...

Cool. Glad to hear its different in the full version I seemed to remember reading somewhere that in the full version you couldnt select which ships to send into battle first - but could send two fleets one behind the other. As cool as this sounded, the simple fact that everything repairs instantly would make this pointless because as soon as the first battle finishes, everyone is healed and then your second fleet arrives. But as they as its different in the full game im a happy chap

As it stands, when you attack a planet and the space battle begins, the computer automatically fills up all your pop cap with ships and selects which ones to put on the map. This is very annoying! I often have to get ships killed off so that I can bring in the ships I originally wanted to start with. Is this limited to the demo or is there a way to select which ships enter the battle and which are reinforcements?

Damage is NOT persistant!
dougsmithuk replied to Teradyn_pff's topic in EAW Issue Reports and Tech Support
Same here. Liking the game so far, but wish there was no instant quick repair after battle. If this is moddable into the game afterwards then hurrah!! But if not, I can see the same battle going on and on and on as one person retreats, gets fully repaired and goes straight back again!! Could be incredibly tedious!! Other than that and the fact that when chewie captures a vehicle it is automatically fully repaired, its a good game so far. Small things, but hopefully fixed in a patch or mod -
Been doing a search of the forum and discovered that ships DO get repaired automatically after each battle. "Delphi-PG" confirmed this in the post, but dodged the question about if they repair instantly or over time. Everyone seemed to think the instant repair feature was a bad idea, so im guessing that he dodged the question because repairs ARE instant. There goes the strategy element of the game. Not pre-ordering as originally planned now until I see if this is moddable into the final game. Seems its made for kids or a console with such a simplistic campaign. http://pff.swrebellion.com/index.php?topic=1217.0 Plus when chewie captures a unit, it regains FULL health during a battle!! Take the AT-AT down to near zero health, capture it and VOILA its back to full health!! These are all small things that should be easily fixed, but they mean a lot to me as I'm not a console player
