Are the space battles doomed to be the same all the time?
SirNuke replied to Teradyn_pff's topic in EAW General Discussion
Not really. They would serve as reinforcements during battles for the ones you lose. The timer is probably set long enough that you can't afford to arrive without ties prebuilt. -

That would be what I thought as well... X-wings/A-wings are superior, but certainly not invincible, and the I don't think either of them truely have the firepower to take on major capital ships by themselves. So in short, I doubt you will see many Rebel fleets composed almost entirely of starfighters (or at least if you do, it won't be very hard to counter). Regardless, I am 99$ sure that fighters can be garrisoned in ships. The first two ingame videos showed fighters be sent out of ships (in particular, how do Tie Bombers move if they can't be garrisoned?). -
F then wraps around to 65,535! The odds 775 to 1, I believe.

Um, I could make a few quick ideas, but I don't really understand the conditions. Is there a certain theme you are advertising?

I know this means next to nothing, but I vaguely recalling the X-wing starfighter game showing A-Wings in a cutscreen showing .... the evacuating of Yavin? Or at least sometime around the Battle of Yavin missions. A pity my copy of the game doesn't work on new versions of Windows (or any in Dos emulators). I miss that game and Dark Forces. -
I assume not all hutts are powerful gang lords (or simply really rich). Though I can't imagine hutts directly engaging in combat, even if they can't afford to fire people to fight for them.

"campaines"? Campaigns, perhaps? If that is what you are trying to say... What about them? It is expected that in an RTS (and most computer games) you have a campaign for each side.

It seems that Supreme Commander has hijacked the thread "How will EaW stack up as a RTS?" in The Bar forum. Supreme Commander, if at nothing else, will be very different. I am looking forward to both that and Company of Heroes. Maybe this will be the year of the RTSes. Isn't THQ releasing both Commander and Heroes?

Eh, I need to play the game first to know if I what I would mess around with. I thing that I think would be cool, is to have space and ground battles occur at the same time (like use mouse wheel to scroll between ground and space battles, and be able to order ships to target ground units). As for the pop cap though, I would make it dependant on the map, as to allow at least a few epic huge star wars battles in a game. Though I do agree there needs to be a cap. Otherwise once either side gains a significant credit advantage over the other, the game would basically be over.

I think a better question is "Is there anything that is off limits a few weeks before going gold?" But to answer your question, in a lot of ways it wasn't axed a few weeks before going gold. I suspect they having fiddling around with versions that did and didn't include the Venator, and simply came to the conclusion that the Venator didn't fit in (or didn't add to the fun, or whatever), and switched to a/the non-venator version.

Wouldn't it be 9 + heros + air cover + creatures? While it would seem that the unit count is low, I personally much rather have 9 units that are all useful then in a lot of RTSes when 25%+ of the units are near worthless, as well as 9 units with virtually no overlap between unit function Though without playing the game, I can't say whether all 9 will be useful, and if any of the units will overlap in function.

People who attempt to influence voters at booths like that are just ___holes. Where serious corruption occurs is people taking advantage of the ungodly amount of dead/missing/unable to vote/etc names that are registerable. See this for a list of 'tactics' (some of which are admittedly outdated and extreme, but it should give you an idea how many false votes are possible).

"Vote early, vote often" Quoting my Dad from his Chicago days. Voting fraud is common, and occurs on both sides. I don't know how much of an effect it had on the election, how much of it is intentional (couple in Ohio accidentally voted twice [once in booths, once through mail] on a school bond that failed by one vote, though it turned out one voted yes and the other voted no) but I can say I that neither major party directly coordinated any type of voter fraud. And I don't think Diebold did anything illegal, though I don't like the company at all, and their CEO is complete irresponsable idiot for saying that quote. Lastly, I don't support Bush, though I felt him [at the time] compared to Kerry was the lesser of two evils (though I'm fairly certain I was wrong in thinking that).

I am curious how the long the timer is in relation to how long space battles last. I wouldn't be suprised that the battles never last long enough to get more than a few squads of ties out from the 'unlimited supply'.

I leave one thought on this topic... Someone has to create content for the Star Wars universe. Why not here? Does anyone have 100% proof of a book that specificly states that the broadside couldn't have existed? Maybe it was a common ship, but unimportant enough that it is never 'acknowldeged' in any books or movies? (it is, after all, a support ship) Okay, another thought. I wonder if it turns out this ship is vital for any Imperial fleet, causing many hard core Star Wars fanboys to lose games because they refuse to build it?

How about my new sig? Seriously, though, listen to Little.B. 6 months from now there will be plenty of Star Wars mods that add 'missing units' in, and more importantly the game will still be fun, rather than having a game that's fun for a month because they choose the route of perfect Star Wars emulation.

"I've have you now" says the almighty Gen.Vader! Almost sounds like I've had you now. I'm following my own path, but I am curious to hear why this isn't a completely worthless and bias poll, and possibly why the two people say they will follow the movies.

I'm not sure about the GeForce4. I vaguely recall deciding to upgrade my GeForce4 card because it wasn't directx 9. The second result on google, however, suggests that the GeForce4 is compatable, and Junker's post says it will be supported by EaW, so I don't know.

I am always for balance first. Realism never directly equals fun. For eample, play anything Maxis made that ran on Windows 3.1 (other than the SimCity games). In particular, I have a copy of SimEarth back home. Even by today's standards, it is both cool and realistic, but it is the raw antithesis of fun. For me, the 10 second good feeling of "Hey, they have both one and two seater Y-wings! That's exactly the same as in the Star Wars universe!" doesn't begin to outweigh my fustration over any, even minor, balance issues. And lets face it, if the Star Wars universe was real I seriously doubt that the Rebels would have lasted through ANH. With that being said, realism can add a ton to a game, and it should not be 'swept aside'.

As Deron started this topic, I am sure he knows that hapes isn't a ship, and he simply didn't put 'ship' after 'a hapes'. Also, I believe Hapes is a cluster of planets, not a planet. Lastly, if you are going to attack someone like that, at least make sure you have decent grammer and spelling.

Problem is you can't add a new graphics card to a laptop, no one told me this when I got it.... Ahh, that sucks. My thinkpad is like that as well, with a 16mb sis card. Fortunantly, my desktop is more than good enough. As for demo release, AoEIII's demo was released on a wednesday. Perhaps a 21st release date?

Damn, is that the shading thing you need higher than a Geforce 4? if so I wont be able to play this game Edit: nevermind, did a quick search and according to it almost all graphics cards should have it, I should be good to go! Sorry to highjack this thread. The GeForce 4 doesn't work with DirectX 9. The first geforce card to work is the 5200, I believe. Looking at newegg, they seem to be about $40 for a 5200fx 128mb card (if you are willing to spend a bit more, newegg also has a considerably better 5500fx 256mb eVGA card for $50. I have a 128mb version of that on my sister's computer, and I can vouch that it packs a punch, particularly for its price). I am not quite sure why they mentioned T&L, as I am 99% sure there are no Dx9 cards without T&L. Back to topic, even if you could keep fighters on a planet, could you keep enough to make it worth while?

A lot of those updates seemed like they were rushed out (a-wing video, mon calamari crusier, and x-wing videos barely showed them in action). Plus no pictures of the battlefields for the new planets? Did anyone else notice the "you cause" on one of the building discriptions? A clear sign of programmers put the akward position of having to write something that will be seen by the public. Anyway, I think this points toward the release of the demo fairly soon.

A couple of things I would like to point out. People still play starcraft. If the game is good enough people will still come back to it. I can think of maybe 6 or so RTSes that I though were good enough that I wanted to play them a year after I got them. In comparison, I can think of a dozen amazing fps, many of which I still play from time to time. One of the main reasons for this is because the RTS field hasn't changed a whole lot since the C&C Red Alert and Starcraft days. The only two major advances I can think of in the area of combat are heros and squads. From what I can tell, Petroglyph is attempted to add 4X elements to the universe part of the game, and has attempted to greatly simplify ground combat. If the ground combat works correctly, I believe it allow players to concentrate more on overall strategy without having to worry about base distractions [such having as building units while attacking]. To me, that is the type of innovation that the RTS field hasn't seen much of. If EaW is enjoyable enough to non Star Wars fans, I think we could see it being played heavily years down the road. Fanboys won't cover the cost of a computer game. It needs to be fun first. I am looking forward to playing a mod of EaW that has all of the units and game play completely to canon. I suspect, however, had Star Wars actually occured the Rebels would have been decimated long before Return of the Jedi. From knowing someone who still plays starcraft on battle.net [and more importantly, still wins almost all of his games], playing a game where you already know the outcome isn't fun [aka having him roll over my team of 6]. C&C sold extremely well because it was the first RTS to feature truly different sides and very intense game play. Every successful RTS game to date has been a rehash of those two successful elements. I think it is very clear that deep strategy is much better left to turn based games. Lastly, this is westwood. All of the C&C series was amazing (even Generals, if you can get past the breakage of the C&C story line [and the traditional EA show stopping bugs in the 1.0 versions]). If anyone can make a really good Star Wars RTS, they can.
