  1. Of course. What else would it be?
  2. Did I touch a nerve?
  3. Has anyone heard anything recently? It seems Spore hype has really died down. The last thing I can remember hearing about it was Will Wright saying Spore will be released in the second half of 2007, but that was back in Fall 2006. EDIT: Grammerz
  4. Josh Woodward - One man group. He does a lot of stuff, most relating to acoustic and folk rock. Great stuff, lots of free songs. Harvey Danger - Fairly big group in the 90s, released a new free cd in 2004. That's all I got right now. Also on electronic. Music is defined as "an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color." I don't care for most electronic music, but I fail to see why it can't fulfill that definition. Kenny G, the King of soulless music, is still music.
  5. I voted for 'Not Worth Saving', though come to think of it I strongly agree with Garbageben. What brought myself (and I'm sure many people) to this forum was two early kickass EAW videos. On the contrary, there has been no hype at all for P-02. I will say the various admins should pitch in and purchase a domain name, and maybe look into developing a new theme, before the release of P-02 news.
  6. My video card's fan is dead... so not right now.
  7. Weezer- The Good Life
  8. I currently have a 9800Pro. While I am extremely impressed by how well the card has held up. However, nVidia provides superior Linux drivers, and as such my next graphics card will be a GeForce. I am curious to hear the reasons why ATI cards aren't designed for games (and if so, what are they built for).
  9. -UT 2007 (I'm suprised no one has mentioned this one) -Spore -C&C3 -Supreme Commander -Brothers in Arms 3 -Wii+Goodness Petro hasn't even given P-02 a name yet, which makes me think it won't be released until 2008.
  10. The Red Squares - Turn to Me Free music!
  11. I believe at this point, neither nVidia or ATI will be releasing any new AGP cards. So no DirectX 10 AGP cards.
  12. Macs have a traditional stronghold on schools because of the high discounts Apple offers to schools, as well as the absurdly long life-span of Mac computers. You are right about the gaming market, Microsoft made the brilliant move of creating DirectX back in 1995. To this date, Apple really doesn't consider the gaming market the target of their products, and doesn't court game developers.
  13. Not necessarily, there isn't exactly a lot of competition in the MacOS gaming field. All we need now is a Linux port
  14. WARNING: 80s flash back ahead (but not what you think). http://youtube.com/watch?v=VPgHbt0ODr4
  15. Can anyone else name any games where the expansion was rated higher than the original game?

  17. I personally use Notepad++, though I use it for it's light memory usage and very wide support of various file formatting, and I'm sure there are much better XML editors out there. For your current problem, are you sure none of the other files have syntax errors? For future developing, backup working copies of your files frequently (NOT overwritting older backups), and check for basic syntax errors in Firefox/IE/Opera even more frequently. Then if you have problems use a diff program (like this one) to see what you changed. For more advanced, setup a version control like Subversion (not necessarily for the faint of heart).
  18. Well, assuming the problem still stands... Line 269 is <SFXEvent_Tactical_Build_Cancelled> EHD_Reinforcements_Cancelled </SFXEvent_Tactical_Build_Cancelled And it should be <SFXEvent_Tactical_Build_Cancelled> EHD_Reinforcements_Cancelled </SFXEvent_Tactical_Build_Cancelled> Line 478 is <Battlefield_Modifier_Ability Name"Empire_Field_Commander_FOW_Increase"> And it should be <Battlefield_Modifier_Ability Name="Empire_Field_Commander_FOW_Increase"> That's all I got. Grab a fixed copy.
  19. I'm taking computer science at the University of Michigan. I'm not sure what specific industry I'll go into (in the long run), but I am still considering the video games industry. It's depends heavily on whether I can get a video game industry internship. As for the rest of my life, I'm not too picky as long as I enjoy my job, earn at least 50k a year, and I'm not in the Midwest. To tell you the truth, I would rather being doing something I enjoy over something that pays really well. I suppose I am fortunate that I enjoy programming, and it pays well
  20. College discount represent. I can get copies of Windows XP Pro for $10 (or free if I want to download an ISO), and I believe they will be selling Vista for the same price a few months after it gets released. Oddly enough, the ISO download is a full version, despite the fact that you probably already have windows if you are downloading and burning an ISO. Back to Vista, if not for DirectX 10, I wouldn't waste my $10. If I wasn't getting the discount, I wouldn't jump. I use Linux for most things non-gaming, and it's not worth the $200ish Vista will cost.
  21. What happened to the good old days when developers put a lot of stuff in demos? I, and I'm sure many people, played and loved Unreal Tournament 2004's superb demo. These two short-maps-type demos really don't show off games very well. Anyway, on to my thoughts: Positive/Neutral 1. The game seems more complex. 2. It feels more like a C&C game. The Zann faction feels a closer to the out-there style that factions in C&C games had (not a bad thing, since the Zann faction still seems Star Wars realistic). 2. Environment factors make the individual maps much more interesting. This partially addresses my main complaint about EAW (all of the maps feel the same). I really hope most maps have a lot of things 3. The game play style of the Zann faction should be fascinating. The powerful weapons but weak armor (at least for the space units) will force players to only commit where/when they have a decisive edge and can win fairly quickly. The faction seems to take advantage of the galaxy map (for example, ability to bribe and bypass planets). I'm sure it's one of the most unique factions I've seen in a RTS in quite a while. Strong work. 4. Most of the voice acting is very well done on Zann fraction units. It probably helps that we don't already have in our minds what exactly we want the units/heroes to sound like. 5. Mobile defense torrents should make flags much easier to defend, and should be an excellent addition. Negative: 1. Would it kill sales of the game to put 1v1 skirmish and multiplayer (a single 1v1 space and a single 1v1 land) mode in? Even if it only allows for a very small portion of the unit hierarchy? I'm rather sick of demos that take longer to download and install than to play. 2. Buzz droids are useless. And they look rather weird zoomed in. Plus they are way too large. 3. While the interactive environment features are cool, the maps probably could use a lot more of it. Playing in a more or less actual city with dozens of close buildings that can hold units would be awesome. Also having static cover would be really cool (like sandbags, and the unit is somewhat protected even if not right next to them). 4. I really wish the battle pop caps had been significantly increased. Especially for ground battles. 5. It's really hard to go back to infantry squads that don't have squad AI after playing Company of Heroes. 6. Some of the vocal responses seem out of place. In particular, many of the space Zann units respond when clicked on with something to the extent of "Last transmission garbed, repeat". I hope this isn't intentional. 7. The game doesn't let you skip through the cut-screen steps (where a hero is saying thing for plot purposes). I was very irritated to find out after having finishing half the game and have to quit that I had to re-listen to everything. 8. The script is very weak. Supreme strategist? Seriously, supreme strategist? Too much of the scripted dialog is unnatural. His motivation for hating the Empire is laughable. 9. Along the same lines, the in-game cutscreen feels very unnatural and very unrealistic. How cool would it be if instead of the Tyber/Second in command cutscreen went along the lines of: Both crouched, talking behind some type of cover. Second in command grabs the artifact and runs off. A couple of stormtroopers run after the second of command, with audio of them calling for reinforcements. Tyber stands up from his cover and blows the storm troopers away. Pause for about 3 seconds, and play the sound of an AT-ST (which is still off screen). Tyber curses, puts his gun down, and comes out of his cover. Two AT-STs appear (and do not take really odd paths around each other due to the absurd amount of units, such as in the real cutscreen). Fade to black as a couple squads of Stormtroopers converge on Tyber, as Tyber gives his speech that he will escape. Verdict: Demo was still fun, though short. I'm really looking forward to the Zann fraction, and I will probably buy the expansion (though not at the release). It looks like FoC will be a huge improvement over EAW.
  22. Since PCI-e is full duplex, the max transfer rate is 4GB/s both ways. Theoretically, the total max bandwidth for PCI-e is 8GB/s. However, most (even high end) cards can't max out the AGP's bandwidth. Hence why the dual-core graphics cards (like the 7950) are able to perform almost as well as SLI-ing two single-core cards. That being said, I wouldn't get a new motherboard with AGP.
  23. Assuming the device connecting your computer to the Internet is in fact a router, the switch allows multiple devices to connect the router (which masks all devices as a single device). To check open a command line prompt on the computer (Start->Run... and enter cmd.exe) and type ipconfig (+ enter). Under a line labeled Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: (or similar) there should be a line that is IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : num.num.num.num. Go to whatismyip.com. If the IP Address whatismyip gives is different from the IP ipconfig gives, then the switch will work correctly as I described. For best results, paste the results of ipconfig and whatismyip here and I can give you my recommendation (to copy stuff from the command line, right click in the window, select 'mark', select the text to paste and press enter). For security reasons, I recommend removing the first number from each IP (ex: for 128.256.130.64 use .256.130.64).
  24. Yes and yes. The router still connects through the wireless internet, and the switch allows more devices to connect to the router.
  25. That's quite a box Eric072691.
