  1. Yea thats my point. If you take over system after system really fast it can hurt you more than help.I can't stand le aving a system without atleast 2 shields. Many times I have forgotton to place defense's on a world and just when I start to attack the enemy I lose the planet. This forces me to scrap vital ships and I have to start my war over again.
  2. I would just hate to really get hooked on Rebellion and then have this small community go away. I remember about 3 or 4 years ago I decided to play Mechwarriors 2: Mercs online for the first time. So I went around the servers looking to see if anyone was still even playing the game. I found that it was still very popular and there was a system of clans. They faught against each other in match's and such and it was all fun. 3 weeks after I got into the community it all crashed down around me.... some company had the nerve to make a mechwarriors 3 and the mech2 community went away in 3 days. So I hope you can understand how I can be a little worried about getting hooked on another old game =)
  3. so far the only thing that has proven able to kill me with this strat is a natrual disaster.its VERY devestating to lose even one planet since Im forced to scrap some of my fleet (or troops) to balance the thing out again. But other than that Im able to enjoy myself.Plus I like the fact that in many ways Im at a disadvantage to the AI in all of my games. Many times Im forced to keep my fleet on the move to avoid being trapped since the rebels have more systems and of course that means more ships early on. The main thing that keeps me playing Rebellion is that this is the only RTS game I have played where the comp could kick my butt more than I could kick its.Maybe the Ai does some dumb stuff but no one said the AI was very smart. The game itself is why the AI is soo hard to beat at times. Its just sooo much easier for a computer to manage all those systems and a human has to put in alot of effort just to stay equal.
  4. I never really got hooked on the game. Not because its not fun tho =) I was just hooked on SC/BW (StarCraft) and that addiction had me for almost 6 years. But just my luck this site will be abandoned in a week and I won't have anyone to talk to about how I got owned by the rebels!!
  5. I never place fighters in defense of any system since the type of game I play would make that pointless.Plus I rather have every fighter with my fleet so I can be sure of stopping any rebel force.I have found that all the AI does is orbit a planet and when it see's it can't invade or bombard the planet they just leaves. So having fighters would serve no purpose other than to waste time and energy rebuilding them. One thing I did do on my last game was instead of trying to build ISD's I just built dreadnaughts. I found that if you have enough of them (with the proper anti fighter support) you can handle anything short of a bulwark. They are cheaper and faster to build than ISD's so I can have more of them faster without losing any real advantage.
  6. I have read a few topics on these forums and I have noticed that people seem to find the game hard.Mind you Im playing the unaltered game. In general I have 1 planet with 5+ CY's and 1-2 TF's,and 1 planet with 10 or so shipyards.Around these 2 core strongholds I expand slowly and with each new planet I take I send 2 shields and 4 or so troops. Now I will admit I have had problems with sabotage but I solved that by placing 2 characters on most of my planets.Since I tend to only control 2 sectors for the whole game I can afford to use my characters this way.And whenever I do happen to lose a shield I just place one of my fleets in orbit of that planet untill the shield can be replaced. Unless I have neglected to build any cap ships then my fleet should be able to handle anything the rebels (I play imp mostly) can throw at that system.Overall I have found this strat to work really well even as the rebels.I have yet to have a AI fleet be able to bombard any planet of mine that has 2 shields on it.Now you must realize I like playing a defensive game so this strat does take some time. But by the time the AI can even threaten to break a 2 shield system I have 4 or 5 STD's along with probably 8 dreadnaught's (they provide some nice extra punch on the cheap), and 6 or so lancers. And of course I have a full compliment of Tie Defenders. That may seem like a small fleet for around the 4000th turn but keep in mind from the moment I could create a interdictor ship I would be trapping every rebel fleet thats orbited any of my worlds. So by that time in the game the AI has not really had a chance to mass much of anything since the fleets it sends out almost always gets wiped out. PS.I was not sure if this is the right forum for this type of post but it seemed like the best one for it.
  7. I have only played 2 online games and that was probably back in 00 so I can only speak of comp games. My shortest game was probably about 100 turns. I was the empire with HQ Victory on. I got smart and started attacking the rebellion right off the bat.... and I paid for it with the loss of coruscant.I had stripped the planet of all its defense's so it was very simple for the rebellion to own me. But in general my games last 5000+ turns when Im in the mood for a long fun game (and thats most of the time).
  8. Every 5 or 6 months I pull out my copy of Rebellion and have some fun playing it hardcore for about a week. This time I am about 4 days into my Rebellion stint and I decided to check the net for some detailed info on units and such so I could improve my game play. Imagine how surprised I was when I found this site (it was the first one I checked) and realized people are still playing the game. Hmm... oh yea I wanted to ask a question =D Is this site dedicated to Rebellion or what exactly? From what I have read I gather there are mods for the game and thats one reason its still played. But can someone explain to me a general history of what this site is about? Im not looking for something in depth. Just some general info so I can get caught up on whats going on. PS.Reading some of the posts on this forum makes me feel old since I got the game when it first came out. I even have the poster that came with it (tho it has some tears since I had it rolled up).
  9. I just started playing Rebellion again about 4 days ago (no online play tho) for the first time on my new computer (Compaq Presario with XP home) and I have also had the game crash alot on me. I almost always happens when I try to enter a battle and sometimes when Im leaving one. Its not very common but it does happen enough that I have started saving my game every 20 or so turns. I never had any real problems on my old comp with win98 (the comp was a 133 MHz heh) and the game. So I know its XP. Im going to try playing the game after I change one of the settings in the program options. In the program properties there is a option to have XP emulate win98 for certain programs that have troubles with XP. I tried it with a few other of my old games with no luck tho so Im not sure if it will help.
  10. He said he upgraded to XP home =) Anyway.... I have had some problems with rebellion running on XP (crash's and such) but I didn't have any problems installing. You might want to make sure the CD is clean. If thats not the problem then you might just have to reinstall XP because something might be wrong. Yes I know reinstalling XP just to try and fix one game sounds like a waste of time but I personally have found that doing a clean install fix's many problems.
