This may help you when it comes to modelling in GMax. Its a video tut i made. Btw its normal for it to be a .exe. Just run it and it should be fine.

Nice ships! Well I first model the ship with a max of detail and then add texture details where i think it is necessary.

That a very good basis. i do that I never have any problems. SOCL. Why don't you start by passing from hard booze onto beer and then gently slowing the consomation. SHould make things easier.
