Why does my game crash after I made changes?

Question

Posted
After I make changes my game jams up and I can't play! I usually only make minor changes such as changing values on ships and facilities as well as increasing the amount of starting troops and fighters. After I start up the game it will load my map and then I will get a critical error and Rebellion has to close. Any ideas on how to fix this or what the hell is going on with my game? Thanks a lot!

Hi GenRommel welcome to the Forum!!!

I assume you are talking about changes made by RebEd

Are you playing the AI or are you playing multiplayer???

If you are playing multiplayer , the other player must have the same values as you have otherwise the game will not match up. ( I have found this out to my cost!! ). I am a novice when it comes to RebEd, Trev, Jahled SOCL et al are really the ones to ask on this subject. For more info on multiplayer probs see the thread marked Supremacy vs Rebellion. Evader99 gave me some useful advice

You have failed me for the last time

Usually numbers above 255 will crash the game, as far as general editing goes. Other concerns maybe images that don't work, etc. Can't really understand what the problem is unless you give specifics of what you are editing.

the only time i have had crash problems is when i have goofed on research values. make sure none of your research values are the same. when this happens and i go back and look at what i've been editing, its usually because i have like two 5s for research values for Imperial ships. take your time, do one thing at a time, save it, load it, start it. if it works, great, go change a few other things. doing it systematically and testing after every certian section you change is the best advice i can give you.

I can make about any changes without problem, even research values. However, if I change the cost and maintenance point value for Alliance capital ships, it crashes every single time. So if anyone has any ideas, I'd be happy to hear them.

Strange, I've never had that problem - and being an Alliance man, they're the first I edit.

Does it crash as soon as the game loads or due to an event ingame?

Instantly, as soon as I load the game, and if it's a new game, it crashes during the little movie of the shuttle flying. This is if I set the cost and maintenance to 1, the bare minimum permitted, apparently. I just set them both to 5, and it seems to be working fine (except that sometimes when I go to build, advanced spacestations are sometimes available, and sometimes not. Strange, and never had that problem before.)

Anyway, I guess that's what I get for goofy editing, but I still remember my first few play throughs back in the day, before I discovered RebEd, and man, they took a long time.

Incidentally, I just reinstalled the game this morning (reading Labyrinth of Evil reinspired me), and I haven't installed any updates. But I had in the past, and I've always had this exact problem. Only editing Alliance cap ships; I've cheesed down Empire ships with no difficulty at all.
