I found this while wasting my time on the Net.

http://www.cdmag.com/strategy_vault/rebellion_preview/page1.html

It's a link to one of the sites that reviewed the game before it was launched. The few screenshots look funny, it gives away what the Beta version of REbellion looked like... The pages is from 1996. 8O

That was an interesting read. It's a shame that some aspects of the game weren't used, such as these:

. . . an example was given where it would be possible to hide ships behind planets.

and

You don't necessarily ally yourself with certain planets because they possess resource X, but rather to gain either a tactical advantage or to gain access to their technology and/or fleets.

A shame these weren't used, the latter more than the former. Perhaps these ideas could be incorporated into Reloaded or something of the sort ? ?

Wow, that is a nice find Trej and rather old one at that. I agrre with Scath and Krytos, those features would have really made it better. :)

I remember already reading this before trej put it on the site (was searching for a place to download wing commander)

Many ideas that weren't kept could have given much depth to the game. We should use them in the SWRII project.

EDIT: On the site I also found the review of the game http://www.cdmag.com/articles/011/043/rebellion_review.html

One thing is clear: They loved it.

Yah, excellent reviews, but still, theyboth brought up points that rebellion could have been much better.

I think, the main problem by these great developments is: time

They always have to keep up a release date, that's why the Millenium Falcon picture in Rebellion never had a chance to get used. It's a handicap for most of the games. And in most cases, the main reasons of these strict dates are economical. I know some games, that could have been great titles, but were released to early. Sad.

Still, Rebellion is great the way it is! :D

Its always easy to think of how a game could be made better.

It is impossible to find a game which is perfect. And I agree with Forge when he says that they did a pretty good job on rebellion.

We all know that this is a great game, hence the reason we are all on this site.

But, if they had had the time to design some of the things they had planned, the game probably wouldnt have been teh silent hit that it was, and they may have made a sequal to it.

There are great games, that can became famous.

And there are EXCELLENT games, that never will gain enough attention :(

Just browse through http://www.the-underdogs.org

You may find uniqe and superb old games like Seven Kingdoms 2, which is the best rts ever made (in my opinion). Since it was too complex (like Rebellion), it had to fail on the market.

Agree on all points. Some things in life achieve 'cult' status. This is one such thing. It will not die untill Lucas Arts release something that basically allows you as the player to do sort of the same thing (control characters, build fleets, manage resources, etc). There's only so much 'in-your face' type games certain people can play before one's imagination begins to cry out for attention! I was raised on paper and pen role playing games for similar reasons. I also find games like Quake violently boring. Oh and that's me being violent and feeling bored.

depends the game. Some games such as Soldier of Fortune or Medal of Honor are so repetitive that you get borde within the first hour.

But other games such as Half-life are capable of keeping you playing for a bit longer.

But then comes the rarer and much more interessting kinda game. The kina game that may appear impossible and boring the first time you play but are fabulous once you really get into it. I mean the Rebellion-likes. And with that Rebellion is so easy to mod that you can play a different game every day.

That would have rocked actually. I would love to see that. I do it myself. I send ties to most unimportant planets, just because. The more important planets get more fighters plus gencores and stuff.... :D
